Who's winning the energy battle between Russia and the West? | Counting the Cost

  • An all-out energy war between Russia and the West threatens to deepen Europe's energy crisis, putting pressure on governments to make interventions in the energy market to rein in soaring prices.
But it also puts the Kremlin's revenues at risk and is meant to stem the flow of funds into its war coffers.
Moscow's earnings from energy exports are expected to rise by 38 percent this year. Western capitals say they want to cut off that financial lifeline. The G7 have agreed to cap the price of Russian oil, and the European Union plans a cap on Russian gas prices, too.
In response, the Russian president said he will "freeze" European countries if the price caps are imposed.

Price to pay for not proactively managing the human population. To reach the 1st billion, it took from the beginning of humanity till 1900. So by any reasonable estimate, it took close to 500,000 years or more for the human population to reach the 1st billion. Since 1900, we have added another 6 billion and counting. So we added another 6 billion in just 121 years? Considering a finite amount of resources (including air and water) and land, what makes one think there will be no adverse impact of continued population growth?

In my humble opinion, the EU and Russia will suffer both in short and long term. Replacing Russian Oil at any cost is more expensive than keeping it. The wisdom of keeping it drove the growth of the German industrialized engine for decades, made Europe competitive and economically secure. By not resolving the post-Soviet era geopolitical challenges that threatened Russian interests in Europe, EU showed lack of tact in protecting its own interests. In yielding to American narrative of having a weak Russia, over European interests, the EU allowed a major war on its territory after so many years. The EU had the wisdom to broker the Minsk agreement but lacked the will to ensure that Ukraine obeyed it. It is safe to say that it is the EU's weakness rather than American pugnacity that brought about this war. If the EU had stopped America through NATO from poking Russia in the face, the cheap oil and gas would have kept Europe running, its future secure and its interests safe.
On the part of Russia, it is currently selling its oil and gas at a discounted rate to the East at the cost of losing its historical neighbours. It's wasting its resources on a useless war ( even though for them it's an existential one), limiting its growth opportunities in the areas of technology and rich western market. A supplier that fights with its buyers suffers no matter who else buys from them. Making new friends and neighbours will cost Russia much more than keeping the old and time-tested ones. The only winner in this conflict is America. Biden has through this proxy war returned America to a prominent influential level in Europe, and a buzz name in International Police-Keeping, something it lost with Trump, he has also increased the sales of its Oil, Gas and of course its heavy arms and ammunition. Most importantly, it has without force or diplomacy made Europe on its own to increase its commitment to increase its military expenditure under NATO. This is something they haven't agreed to do for years.
With the war, Europe will spend more on oil and gas, lose its competitive advantage, spend more on defence and above all, now begin to worry about a new angry and unusually bellicose neighbour, who no longer has anything to lose fighting you.
My advice is for Europe to rethink its strategic role in the emerging world. If it continues with its current position, it will be consigned to the sad edge of history.

The European industry will be unable to compete in any way with Asien suppliers, Cars, machines, industrial goods of any descripotion. Winning the military war? There are no winners. Winning the economic war? It depends on their ability to recover. Europe it's looking pretty bad, but it still has huge resources it can draw on in the medium term. Whereas, Russia has lost 50% of its export market indefinitely, and logistically, it looks like they simply can't move that amount of oil and gas to make up the shortfall. Either way, it's a tough few years ahead for the whole world.

The logic of the EU is to get all consuming countries to discriminate against Russian oil. The appeal to dissenters, China and India, in this scheme they say is cheaper oil for all. Exactly how OPEC will react to this blatant market manipulation remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the EU scheme is an appeal to India and China, neglecting to understand that these countries also depend on Russia in other ways than energy. For example, arms, if countries are forcibly imposing caps on Russia, tantamount to stealing its revenue, how can they turn around and ask Russia for arms?
Over the past couple of decades, the EU has gotten drunk with believing itself as a necessary - for Europeans - economic and moral superpower. Not only did the Brits shatter the necessity pillar, but the Russians have now shattered the economic pillar. Leaving the EU with only its media propagated virtue-signaling moral clothes, and everyone in Europe and elsewhere can see a self-inflated EU giant reduced to the size of a chihuahua.

EU as a fuel (gas and oil) net importer wants to put a price cap and expect the suppliers to comply with it? Is it an out of season April Fool joke? Are they truly adults?
First, of course Russia will not comply with it. If EU don't want to pay the asking price, they won't sell.
Second, major fuel exporters such as OPEC will also oppose that idea. Why? Because if EU successfully put a cap on Russian oil and gas, I bet they will try to do that with oil and gas from other exporters as well.
So, the price cap, in my opinion is truly stupid. But I can't say who can bear with it longer, Russia or EU.
