- As this motor is now for sale I've decided to give it a full service for its new owner. The spark plugs were checked and recoil starter greased as well as new choke/ fuel shut off mechanism renewed and well as idle know replaced.
New parts are still so easily available for these - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Finally I find somebody that actually tells and do these steps after a day of searching. Thanks man.
You are a life saver I have the same engine and have been looking for a video on it this is what I have been looking for great job
Thanks for the video. Just bought one of these used and this video was a big help in showing me before I do it.
Awesome, its good to hear. I'm glad it helped you.
Started an old one of these in my garden today. Is the water tell a spit almost or should it be running. I can see 6 small exhaust holes spitting some water. Not to sure I want to run to long without checking 😉😉
@@dannymaddox666 cheers man
Thank good for this vid! I got the same engine and this was helpful, saved me some "try this and that"-time.
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it helped
Great video bud very informal thanks 👍
I just bought one yesterday. Good to know what to check first before I use it .
To be honest i would check the spark plug to make sure its not too black and fouled - clean or replace. Check that it pumps water when running and condition of the impeller. Then get it in the water - best thing you can do is just use it.

@@Kal-ir9ze exactly right ... it just spits from the exhaust port.
@@dp47280 thanks for the advice
Great video! I have the same engine, but the impellers I find whilst searching have 6 wings and not 3 like the one you used in the video. Does that matter?
Thanks...have you done a video on how to remove the engine covers to be able to get to the carb and recoil starter? Thanks...
Hey, thanks for this video. I have basically the same motor and this helped me change the water pump and impeller. The only problem is I am finding it near impossible to reattach the lower unit. Trying to line up the linkage, water hose and spindle is nearly impossible as well. You did not show that step and I was wondering if there is a trick to it and how you did it. Thanks!
May i ask where you got the fuel shut off and choke valve and the idle valve as i am struggling to find them i know your video is 4 years old but i am trying everything i can to source them great video
Good evening from Greece I want to ask you what spark plug we use in these outboards and what is the spark plug gap
Awesome video. I have a 5 HP Johnson, it appears to be around the same year as this one. Might be a dumb question, but I cannot figure out how to put the motor in reverse (not sure it has the ability to ). the steering handle does a complete 360 degrees, i cant imagine that is the way to reverse, however. Any advice would be appreciated.
You hit the nail on the head. Mine has forward and neutral and reverse is done by spinning the motor 180. It’s still the case on modern small motors. I have a 2.5 Suzuki 4 Stoke 2008 that is exactly the same.
What is parts availability like for johnson outboards , looking at good used 5hp example, thanks in advance for any tips
Could you please let me know the size of the carburetor nozzle on this engine?
Hi would you know where i can get a choke knob for the same engine ur working on here
I have a johnson 4hp 2 stroke it starts first pull then afterwards i couldn't get it to start back what can be the reason
I cannot find videos for my motor which is the 3HP version, it should be similar procedure right? Mine is 1968 Johnson JH-23A
Most motor, especially 2 strokes are pretty much the same process. Take it slowly and if in doubt photograph things before you dismantle them. makes it easier to remember how they go back together.
Hi, Thank you very much for your good Video and very good informatins. I have a question, how much oil do you use to mix with Fuel? 1:50 or 1:100 ? Thanks alot for your answer.
This one was 100:1, HOWEVER, i always have made it more like 80:1 as they are older motors and i sacrificed the cleanliness of the exhaust for a little more lubrication. 100:1 is the official mixture on this motor.
Is this filmed by candle light ?
where could i buy the choke knob for that motor olease
how did you put the gear shaft in i know it's hard to film can you give me some pointers
Do you mean the selector or the prop shaft.
You need to pray high and low to the great hamster, and attend the 3AM mass in which you toss the hamster poopsies into the boiling Borscht. I have a Johnson 4 HP Sailmaster, and I built a sheet metal funnel to aim the shifter rod into the hidden hole. The shifter rod looks like it's askew but don't try to bend it. I did and it took me a whole week of trying to get it back together. Plus getting the drive shaft back into the motor is a bitch. This is the worst example of American engineering in the world. I replaced the impeller in my 4 HP Suzuki and it was a piece of cake because the two halves of the shifter rod are tied together with a clamp which can be accessed thru a big hole which is covered by a rubber cap. Now I have a problem, I have to take it all apart again, replace the impeller, and get it together. The pump wasn't pumping, but the old impeller looks like it wasn't the problem so there must be a clog somewhere...YIKES!!
How did you get the gear linkage back in...?
On this it is just forward and neutral so should just be pretty easy to locate. Shine a torch up the leg and see if you can see where it locates. sometimes a pair of long nose pliers is useful to help locate the shift rod.
Hello m8. What gear oil u r use?? Its the same for garden trimmer?
noooo - i think i used marine gear oil - 80W90 gl-5
Quick question why did you fill the gearbox up from bottom up
Mark Griffiths by doing it like that you make sure that there are no trapped air pockets and that it’s completely full. When the oil comes out of the top hole you know your full.
cause when it comes out of top hole it is full
Hey man. Nice vid. Can you advise what is the best settings for the choke and do you need anything in the idle position when starting.
Full choke when starting but then you should ease it back as it warms up. For starting a tiny bit of throttle but not too much. Basically just enough to increase the revs from idle. Good luck

Hi, can you Tell me Why Oil is runs out of the small hole ? Nice video br. Jörg
form memory i think its exhaust. incomplete burn with oily fuel/ exhaust mixing with condensation etc. nothing to worry about really.
Como es el ( impeller) y como de cambia
I have a simular johnson engine and mine wont go out of gear after putting it back tougether how can i fiks this?
The shift linkage needs to be properly engaged in the correct hole. - It should be very straight forward on those.
Heat video I just got one for my boat match my main 50hp evinrude71 one this is a bit newer
this engine was one of the best ive had for ease of use etc
@@dp47280 yea mines runing great and love it
Thank u for this vid✌
..and how much price with dollar or euro!?
Thanks
No worries. I would say you could pick one of these up in the region of EUR300
I forgot to write im in Canada
Do you have a link for the parts you used? And what kind of oil did you use?
All the parts are readily available. Most are advertised on eBay. The main thing is to do the research on your motor and find an appropriate parts list. The only way really if dealing with different motors is to trawl the net and especially with older 2T motors expect parts to come internationally. Probably from the US like mine did.
Hello my friend 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟👈👌
Hello to you too my friend
My impeller is not worn or damaged but the engine is not peeing any water 😟 what can the problem be?
Remember that these engine don't pee as such. They spit from the exhaust!!
@@dp47280 just bought one today going to mix little rich like you advised . Also mine is spitting as good as this one . I'm going to monitor it and make sure it keeps spitting. Thanks for the great video . Question how do you take the plastics off there are two slot screws and a star on top . . . Thanks again great video you sir are a Profesional. Very important to grease the impeller so it does not wreck it on the first go around when dry
Where is it pumping water out at?
The exhaust outlet half way down the leg. Fine water mist sprays out of the exhaust.

What is the fluid coming out of the hole on the opposite side to the gearbox screws please
I think that was just a bit of water mixed with exhaust from when I gave it a wipe over. I hope that's what it is anyway. Whats the time on the video your looking at?
Please..were you order parts.from Canada Merci. ;)
I order most parts for my 73 on Amazon Canada
you explained nothing about the impeller drive pin.
Dark lighting sucks otherwise good video
Didn't show anything important when putting it back together. Lining up shaft, gear shift rod?
Not much help.

The only thing I needed to see was the gear shift shaft engagement when removing and reinstalling and you skipped it. Wow, it’s the most fiddly bit of the job. Useless
