Yevdokia Rachkevich finding the crash sites means more then just paying respects. During the war, if I pilot or aircrew didn't return they were listed as missing, not dead, and were not recognized as honorable fallen because there is a chance they defected, after all, nobody knew, there was no proof they died, they just hadn't come back.
When Commissar Rachkevich found their crash sites and officially proved they ALL of the missing aircrews had in fact died and not defected, the aircrews were posthumously recognized for their bravery and sacrifice by the Soviet Union.
It doesn't change much for them, they are dead after all, but it's nice for their families to know that their country acknowledges their sacrifice and treats their memory with respect and not suspicion.

Undetected, unexpected, but most importantly unprotected.
They attacked in aircraft made out of cloth, that were practically stationary targets for defending fighters as well as the enemy on the ground.
The airframe would offer very little protection even against rifle fire, especially since they flew low. The cockpits are also not covered, which means fragments from hundreds of flak shells would literally shower the pilot/navigator.
They must have been some of the most courageous warriors to ever exist.

    • @alberich3099
      @alberich3099 Před 3 lety +16

I don't want to to be "that guy" but,
"practically stationary targets for defending fighters" That was a huge advantage to them, they were slower than the stall speed for most german fighters, meaning if a german fighter were to engage them, they could only do so from the front or below, as if they were to come from behind or above, they'd get to slow and plummet to the earth.
Made of cloth, also was an advantage to some extent, as most Maschinenkanonen of the German Foker and Messerschmitt were armed with armourpircing rounds, which were high velocity rounds which would just pass through the cloth not getting slowed down much to cause damage, which was especially imprtant for the wings.
However that made the planes very suseptible to inciendary rounds.
Now this is not to take away anything from what the women (dare I say also girls) did, but there is a missconception that less protection means a higher colunrability.
There is a saying "if you cannot stop it, let it pass though". Which (agreed) is mainly for tanks and their armour development over the years, bit it does apply here a bit.
The Ночные Ведьмы used that percived disadvantage of the Po-2 to their advantage. Beeing light (made from wood and cloth) meant that they could glide for a long time (roughly 9-12 minutes to the target) before needing to gain speed via the motor. Which gave them huge steath advantages, which in turn if you are not beeing shot at (because you are not seen) you don't need that protection.
Another huge advantage was them beeing double winged ment their manouvarability was much better than the german standart fighter, which again if you are not beeing shot at (because of not beeing able to trailed) less protection was needed.
And to show how effective not beeing seen was, they consited of 261 people, of which 206 were within the flying squadrons.
They flew 23'672 sorties (missions) over the span of 3 years which ment they had 34 routating scrables, meaning each squad flew at least one bombing run per day for 3 years staight.
Of those 261 soldiers 32 died over the 3 year time period. meaning one death per 720 bombing runs.
Compare that to the armoured B17 bombing runs where they had roughly 2'800 deaths per 720 runs.
One has to be fair here, and compare also the targets of those runs. While heavy bombers such as the US B17 were used against heavy fortified targets the Po-2 and the Ночные Ведьмы, were used against "soft targets" such as warehouses, anti air positions (yea paradox those are soft targets if they cannot shoot you, they are useless), river crossings and fireing positions (artillery and machingun entrechments). This also contributed to the "low" deathcount.
This shows that while yes the equiment was outdated, and in general underpowered compared to their foes, they have been much "safer" (due to the tactics used) than your conventional bombing runs.
Now this is al statistics and theoretical blabber from a former combat engineer, and I know there is more to it and comparison in hindside is rather bleak, but the idea of no amour beeing bad, I could not leave uncommented.
And again this takes away NOTHING from their bravery and cunning.

Mrs, Rashkevich's order "DO WEAR THE PARACHUTES ON MISSIONS" was mostly ignored: the fate of parachuted pilots on enemy's ground wasn't very pleasing. And you may imagine the fate of the parachuted lady-pilot... It could be much worse then the fate of male pilot.

This is a first hearing for me too. An age old saying came to me right at the start, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". I the "men" didn't like it, they should have got there first. The song is right in line with what I've come to expect from Sabaton, both musically, and the paying homage to important history,
The animation was historically accurate with the uniforms, thanks, tents, and the Po-2's as well. They were slow, max speed 155 MPH. Any decent car can do that these days. The song wasn't as catchy as No Bullets Fly, with it's Chorus "Killing Machine". But that doesnt mean this song on any way any less that any other from what I've heard so far. Artem Mikoyan designed every subsequent type of plane following the Po-2. The Polikarpov Airplane company became Mig after this. And Artem was instrumental in all Mig types designed until his death in 1970.

I had a great history teacher. He was an old man but he was very passionate about teaching history, always sprinkling little facts like the Night Witches into his teaching, just to keep it interesting. Other teachers tried to show movies to make history more entertaining but the kids mostly just slept through them. I only know a few dates, but I know the history pretty well because of how he taught it. I can always look up dates if I need them.
We only saw one movie in our class and that was Gallipoli, which he actually co-narrated.

Since I myself have seen them many times live, I can recommend a recation either from their Empire tour 2012 (live from Woodstock) or Great War tour 2020 (En livstid i krig) to get a perspective on how they are live, they are a fantastic live band & only this horrible period of COVID-19 can be over I hope that all fans of Sabaton will have an opportunity to see them live because it is an experience beyond the ordinary when it comes to concerts.

It is a poorly taught aspect of history, and we can once again thank Saboton for raising awareness of it.
They did not actually stop their engines, but at flight idle they were almost silent - certainly no louder than the wind whistling in the bracing struts and wires of the wings..
It would be impossible to restart at low level and low speed with a hand-propped aircraft like the Po-2, as the only way to restart is to dive to gain speed enough to windmill the prop.
The practice is still taught as advanced training for light aircraft piloting - I've done it! There are still circumstances where it could be useful in an emergency.
You can't dive if you are already at low level. This is why they didn't carry parachutes either, although at the speed they flew, forced landing would have been an alternative. I don't know of any that were taken prisoner though.
They actually had remarkably few losses given the number of missions they flew (from 2 to 10 per suitable night) because of he tactics they used, yet gained more ad higher decorations than any unit of similar size in the entire Soviet military.
The Po-2 was originally designed as a trainer, but the aircraft used were the light bomber variant (I think the LNB). It was produced in greater numbers than any other biplane, as it had so many uses. Some even entered airline service post war. The small bomb load made them ineffective against any hard target though, so their main function was to deny rest and sleep to German soldiers on the eastern front.

I liked your video, especially since it made a deep impression on me. While I was living, there was CZcams, which gave me another happiness. However, working on CZcams videos is like standing alone in a windy expanse. Your videos have the ability to instantly make them attractive.

Another good one is The Last Battle, which is about a battle at the end of WW II, where the SS planned to attack a castle holding French prisoners of war and kill them. Several German Wehrmacht under Major Josef Gangl and American Soldiers under Captain Jack Lee defended the castle against the SS. There is no official Sabaton Video on this, but two videos, one on Yarnhub titles "When Germans, Americans, and French fought on the same side" as well as "Sabaton History - Episode 85" about this battle.
There are a lot of good Sabaton songs about history. Attack of the Dead Men. 82nd All the Way. Ghost Division. Devil Dogs. The Last Stand. Stalingrad. Primo Victoria, and many others.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this, but:
Sabaton is opening for Judas Priest in the tour this fall (in the states).
Hell and Back is a powerful story also. It's about a very highly decorated WWII soldier, and his battle with PTSD. The "treatment" he was getting was meds that didn't help the PTSD, but got him addicted instead.
If you want their "oldest" music, go for Primo Victoria. There is an earlier album, but Primo Victoria is their first military history music. Then there is new stuff being uploaded recently. That can give you a good contrast of what time has done to the sound.

I recently read the research on soldier recruitment and training in a particular region of Russia during WW2 (NB: USSR was a federation of countries, Russia is the largest but still one of those): 3% of women from that region were recruited, half of them weren't involved in combat (like telephonists and nurses), 30% were snipers, 15% were anti-air gunners and 5% were machine gunners (!!!).

Sources vary, roughly 700-800 thousand (!) women served in the Red Army. Beyond the usual women roles such as nurses and telephone operators they also served as tank drivers, pilots (including the 586th, 587th and 588th regiments), machinegunners, snipers (Lyudmila Pavlichenko was the most famous, with 309 confirmed kills), one even made it to naval infantry (a.k.a. "a goddamn marine"). Incredible.

In Flanders Fields was a war poem written during WW1 by Lieutenant General John McRae, a Canadian physicist. Then Sabaton come along and get a choir to sing it. It hits even deeper to be honest.

Best history course you will ever take is a Sabaton concert!!! They bring the stories to life for those who lived and died in them, personal not glorifying except the valor, bravery and courage of those who were involved in history but unlike a dusty old book living breathing people who were there. These women were amazing and yet toss aside at the end of the war and forgotten but not by Sabaton a lesson here for everyone to learn about dedication, duty and sacrificing for something bigger than yourself!!!
If you want a gut wrenching song then do En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg) (czcams.com/video/WBs3G1PvyfM/video.html) BUT put on the Closed Caption for English as the song is in Swedish about the 30 year war (1618-1648) but it is about every war and those caught up in it...as a vet who fought it is so gut wrenching as it is so accurate, the motto from Plato "Only the Dead know the end of War" never is more right then after listening to this song.

the Germans loved to romanticize their enemy. E.g. The Soviet Marines (who wore a black uniform) were called the "Black Death" by the Germans. the Marines fought for every inch of coast and never retreated. they are still an elite unit of the Russian army. their slogan "Where we are there victory" held all the coastal batteries to death, no one retreated, did not escape. Even when the situation was hopeless and they knew they were going to die they held the gun in their hands until the last sigh. Respect must be given to those men and women who have won us the opportunity to live. Americans, all of Eastern Europe, English, Canadians, French, Australians and others. everyone put their head that that hell is over. Give respect to the veterans because just because they fought you breathe today.

And I really like your secound comment, it's so annoiing when people mix up Germans and Nazis. Not every german was a nazi, and not every nazi was german. Vashe zdorov'ye tovarishch.

russian men never oppress women! we love women more than life! like a beautiful flower! like a goddess! only care, support and protection! the video is just a mockery of russian culture! we exalt women above ourselves! there are many idiots, but the russian tradition demands to honor a woman, and not to put equal in hard work. these female soldiers are heroes who love their homeland! they fought at the call of the heart! like everyone else in russia! we just love our homeland and loved ones. stop making us savages, because in your countries people of color and women had no rights until the 20th century!

I think of these brave russian woman as heroes. At that time sexism was a global thing, even if we/you/them «love woman», we had ideas on what was men and womans tasks. Instead of thinking that Sabathon is mocing russia they are clearly honouring these brave russian woman and people like me learn about their bravery and feel respect for them.

@@kernel_panick this is your thoughts as a man. I know russians and have spoken to alot off russian people that say that they have problems with sexism as anywhere else. It’s getting better in the bigger cities but still a thing. As for gay people they don’t feel respected at all and many live in fear or move to other countries where we don’t give a shit about peoples personal sex lives. I like russia, but not the homophobia.
