How to Format an External HDD to Fat32 (For Xbox 360 & PS3 Use)

Most external hard drives out there are formatted to NTFS by default or another type of file system that isn't compatible with the Xbox 360 or PS3, however with this tutorial I'll show you how to easily format it!

My friend got a 500 gb external hard drive so that I could put some of my movies from my computer on it for her, and she wanted to plug it into her x box and watch the movies, well that didn't so well, found your video and it totally worked! Thank you!
This worked for me. Thanks Used it on a old 120gb HDD from a Dell 640m that I had laying around. I cloned my drive and downloaded a ton of PS3 (MAIN) games from PlayStation plus 30 day trial and put the data on the (back up) PS3. Then disable my PSN account on this backup unit to complete the game. However I had save the trophies via usb to upload it to my Main PS3 PSN account.

So what your saying is that we can format a 1Tb harddrive to fat32, however if we have files or games larger than 4gb, it will not work? If this is true having a 1Tb harddrive for simple saved data sounds rather counter productive. I saw on their website that there is a way to get around that. Can you explore those options, in a second video?
I know I'm years late in this... but how do you store those ps3 games if the file limit is only 4gb? are those files splitted already?

You should make a video that shows the hook up to the gaming system with it allowing the extra space. My 1 TB HDD says its in Fat32 format but is still only allowing me to allocate 32GB....???

listen,i have an LG external HDD with 500gb of memory,my hard drive has fat32 but when i pass an iso to put it on the hard drive it tells me that you can´t pass files that has more of 4gb memory what i do??? sorry for my english

I've formatted an external drive to FAT32 (before watching this, I knew how already) but the 360 won't use it still. It is detected on the 360 and my only option is to format it however attempting to format instantly fails with "Cannot perform that action". No error codes. I have a smaller USB3 flash drive that works fine so it's not that, and the HD is 2TB which is what the limit was according to the Xbox website. Any ideas?

Hey this worked i can actually use my external HDD on my PS3 now, one problem though. When I tried to watch one of my movies on my PS3 it said the data was unsupported. What kind of file do i need to switch my movies to in order to watch them on my PS3?
Ugh, I have a 4TB drive that I'm trying to format to backup my PS3 before the Store closing, and I haven't been able to get it to work. Converted to MBR, and even when I try to create just a 1TB partition (instead of a full 2TB that I first created), nothing... Even after using both GUI Format and MiniTool :( I just bought a pretty cheap 1TB external drive on NewEgg - I hope that works after I format it.

It shows that it’s fat32 on The computer but when I plug it into the PS3 nothing shows up? Any other advice you could give me?
for me there is only exFAT and NTFS so should i use the program to make it FAT32 so i can have more than 32gb on xbox?

i watch ANY movie format on a usb flash drive thru my 360..but its only 2gigs. if i do this to my external hard drive, can i watch ANY movie format like the flash drive? or am i limited to AVI and MP4 formats..inb4 i dont wanna mux anything and IM DONE converting and losing quality from bdrips and hd vids
To start, I'm no computer expert. so correct me if I'm wrong. but if xbox 360 only reads fat32, i assume when you use your xbox to format a thumb drive it formats it to fat32 (right?). And if you can't put a file bigger than 4 gigs on fat32 how do you explain grand theft auto five? There is an 8 gig install just to play the game. And its one file.
I've opened up the actual GTA5 files, it's not one file. The install is four separate files which show up as one.

After that download is completed, the setup will run and THOSE files will be split up. In other words, the fat32 format shown in this video is of no use to people that buy games digitally.
yup GTA 5 splits into 4 2GB parts
when you have split file games and send them into multiman it puts them back together again
Thanks for the video! I'm still having a problem... I been using the guiformat and when it comes to selecting drive it doesnt even appear there. I tried changing the drive letter to see if it would recognize it then and still nothing. I'm using a 1TB Seagate external hard drive if that helps any.

You can play media off of larger drives, but you can't use them to store Xbox content like games and profiles. Using it for that purpose is limited to 32GB formatted sections.
Ok, so I know it has a 4gb file limit, but does that mean only 4 GB of space will be allocated for the Xbox total or that I just can't put a file at one time over 4gb?

With the volume label do you have to put it as 500GB or leave it as it is?
Is there ANY way to do it without wiping the drive entirely? I had mine formatted and while I was playing my XBox, the power went out. As it came back on and I went onto my XBox and it stated that the drive wasn't formatted and that, to format it I had to wipe everything off of it. Any suggestions?

Hi, i formatted my xbox 250gb HDD through usb on my xbox. When i put the hdd inside the xbox it does not recognise it... I did download this program and forrmated my hdd just like you showed but its still not being recognised inside my xbox. Only through usb transfer cable. WHAT SHOULD I DO ???

Hafiz Krs download minitool partition 9 free and you can format any size hard drive to fat32 but at same time as changing setting to fat32 change the setting GPT to MBR then it will work all these vids on youtube leave the change of GPT to MBR out i got on it
