#TellMeMoreAboutEU is a Yepso! Initiative to let you learn from the experiences of individuals who enjoy or have enjoyed professional experiences in the EU.
With these first-hand accounts, we hope to inform you of what you need to know to carve your path in the EU, thereby democratising job access to European institutions.
    M O R E I N F O A B O U T T H E I N T E R N S H I P S AT THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION -
    Location: Brussels & Luxembourg
    Institution/Agency: European Commission
    Contract type: Trainee
The European Commission is the politically independent executive body of the EU. It is solely responsible for drafting new European legislation proposals and implementing the decisions of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. It ensures the overall interests of the EU by proposing and ensuring compliance with legislation and implementing EU policies and budgets.
Main objectives of the European Commission:
    Propose new laws.
Manage European policies and allocate EU funds.
Ensure EU legislation is complied with.
Represent the EU on the international stage.
The European Commission's internship programme is open to university graduates worldwide.
Internships span various areas and provide a close look at EU work. The job role largely depends on the service to which the trainee is assigned. There are internship opportunities in competition law, human resources, environmental policy, communication, and many more.
Trainees are entrusted with tasks similar to those of recently hired university graduates. These tasks may involve organising work groups and meetings, gathering information and documentation, preparing reports, answering queries, and participating in unit meetings and other activities. There are also tasks more specific to each department: the work of Commission lawyers is quite different from the economists at the Court of Auditors or the general administrators at the Parliament.
Who can apply: University graduates in any discipline, provided they have their official degree (typically, a certificate can be presented if the degree hasn't been received yet). EU citizenship isn't mandatory (a limited number of spots are reserved for non-EU citizens), but proficiency in two EU languages is typically required. Work experience and postgraduate training are considered a plus but usually aren't necessary.
    Duration: 5 months
Paid: Yes. 1,350 euros (updated for 2024) plus travel expense reimbursement.
Start dates: 1st March and 1st October

Hello! I found the idea of emailing the Directorates very interesting. However, it's listed on most of their websites that they do not accept spontaneous applications by email. Could you tell us more clearly how you did it? Thanks so much! Success!

Thanks Paolo for sharing your experience, this is extremely useful. And, of course, thank you Carlos and the Yepso! team for organizing these sessions. I have a question regarding the email/lobbying strategy and I would be very grateful if you guys could clarify the process a little bit for me. Paolo's recommendation to email the units in order to get some feedback before choosing your three options is great advice. However, it is my understanding that only 25 candidates can apply for each position and that, therefore, you have to be quick in submitting. In your experience, is it just fine to wait a couple of days until you get that feedback or is it actually true that you need to be super fast? Moreover, will units only select from those 25 or might they also consider candidates who contacted them outside of those 25? I'm having a hard time reconciling the need to choose thoroughly but also quickly.
