I have 16" apes on my 96' FatBoy, so I can attest to everything you said. The handling is much better that with the stock bars. I'm 6ft 3in and 250lbs with long arms its an extremely comfortable ride for me. Rode it from Alabama to Arkansas with no issues whatsoever.

I 'v had Apes all my life and I'm 68 this year , and I still ride with them, for a stock bike I find 16" is just right . but you mite like some thing else. The best bars are the ones you like , be happy

I'm 6'2" and had 19" apes with shorty risers on my softail. Mine sat just above my shoulders and were very fun to ride with. They were sometimes slightly difficult making slow, tight turns but never enough to outweigh the positives. One thing I did with mine was switched out the stock bushings and put in rigid since they were so tall. It took all the play out of the bars and gave that much more control when turning. I NEVER had any issues with hands going numb. I'll never ride anything without now.

  • @Hero_of_Legend

I'm 5'4" and I'm installing 12" on mine soon ( got 8" at the moment, because I wasn't sure what would fit me best, at the time ).
I always heard they sucked, and believed it. Then I bought a bike that had apes installed by the previous owner. and my thought was, "I'll take them off when I get home". I got about halfway there before that turned into "No the hell I won't."

    • @thatbeardedguy4206

@@thatbeardedguy4206 Add me to that list. As I said, I have 8" on my current bike, with a set of 12"s on the floor, waiting until a little better weather. I bought my current bike, and my FIRST priority was getting apes. But I had no idea what size the previous bikes' were, so I had to guess, and went with 8"s. They're not bad at all, but they just don't look quite the same. And now after about 3 years, I did a little measuring, and realized I could jump up to 12s, without problem. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what the old bike had.
Apes forever, brother! Ride safe out there!

I swat large lead fishing sinkers into the ends of my bars to dampen vibes. It's an old trick which works nicely.
I've taught many MSF courses while running 14" apes/stock risers and they are natural for countersteering and easy on my back. I don't run them for looks and don't give a shit what anyone thinks about what I own. I could slam my FXR onto the concrete from peg mount to peg mount with zero instability. No shift under max. braking either.
My apes don't move because I don't run rubber or urethane (caps for emphasis!) RISER BUSHINGS. There's no need. Washers or any of the stepped washer solid bushing kits work better with any bar. Bushings only serve to add slop.
Clamps only work well if you use similar metal risers and bars then weld them to prevent rotation. I tack welded the lower parts of my stainless Biltwell risers to my bars and they don't rotate. I can twist off the tacks after unbolting the clamp if I need to replace the bars.
If you buy apes, get them with welded risers. Front Street Cycle fabbed mine and his work is worth the wait.
I have apes on two Shovel Low Riders and one FXR. I've run them since the 1980s.
