RRR (2022) Movie Review: The Salty Nerds marvel at how a Tollywood action movie can give Hollywood Blockbusters a run for their money, not only in terms of visuals, but in story as well! RRR stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, and tells a fictitious story about two legendary Indian revolutionaries as they strike up a complicated and unlikely friendship while taking on the oppressive British Empire in scenes that need to be seen to be believed. Full of action, adventure, dance numbers, and heart, RRR is definitely a unique movie. Directed by S.S. Rajamouli and starring N.T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan Teja, and Alia Bhatt, this is the most epic movie made in all of 2022.
What is your RRR Movie Review? Did you love it? Hate it? Did you think it shamed all the Hollywood action movies to come out this year? Did it make you want to snap your suspenders and dance? Let us know in the comments!

RRR is a Telugu language movie not Bengali. Tollywood here refers to the film industry based in Hyderabad in the south of India not Bengal. Netflix has a dubbed version. India has many other film industries based on languages. Lyrics of the song is not goofy, it's very poetic in the original Telugu language. Songs are very much part and soul of Indian cinemas. Indian movies don't need to change for others. Ram's and Bheem's characters are mythologised in the movie. In the mythology, lord Hanuman carries lord Ram in his shoulders. They are almost demigods in the movie.

i fell so in love with this director's work that i drove an hour and a half to a three movie marathon of his work(i am still buzzing over Eega). @55.00 do you think that you really enjoyed this because it gave you a cinematic experience that you have not had in a while? that is one of the reasons i loved it. what about the unapologetic celebration of masculinity in all of its glory? watching the RRR reviews from straight men in the US brings a smile to my face every time.
as to the plot and story of the film, they are not mindless. there are some culture things that we would miss in the US but make total sense for the Indian audience. The jail break shoulder riding scene for instance. we might think that it looks cool but there is more going on. our two heroes represent gods that have superpowers. Bheem (the H is silent please stop saying Ba Heem, youre driving me nuts. 🤣) is very strong and Ram is no joke with a bow and arrow (didnt you love the never ending quiver of arrows?). my point the Indian audience would not have been surprised about the powers. the director said that he did not make this movie with a western audience in mind.
    HOWEVER----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. totally related with Raju losing his mind over not getting a promotion after working his ass off only to see it go to someone not as deserving.
    2. i saw Bheem as Dr. Martin Luther King cause he was able to bring masses to his cause and was pretty peaceful. Raju, gave me serious MalcomX vibes.
    3. when the mission is accomplished and the guns are secured for the folks; i mean come on now. who better than the USA to understand and relate to a scrappy group of people who want to get their hands on guns to drive out the FREAKING BRITISH and protect their loved ones?

@shelly Lee You have just spoken my mind on this video. I don't get it seriously. Everyone has their own style of making movies. There is a lot going beyond every iconic scenes of this movie which is a cultural thing. This movie is made for Indian sensibilities especially Hindu culture. Randomly comparing this movie with nonsense hollywood crap is bullshit. The story is carried on the shoulders of character emotions but not on the logics or physics you are used to in hollywood. You can't call it an overrated movie without knowing the sensibilities of Indian movies. I get it that the kind of impression Bollywood left on the world is really pathetic. But India is a diverse country with so many languages, cultures. Do try to consume other culture movies before judging any film.
One suggestion from my side would be if you are calling yourself to be a film critics or reviewers you should watch movies for entertainment, value for time and money. And please stop comparing other language movies with nonsense standard template of Hollywood movies.

HOWEVER!!!! some themes are just global: brotherhood, loyality, faith, love, unity, i could go on. btw i have never seen a Bollywood film. RRR was my first Indian movie. i am not a critic i just enjoy the movies. and i, like most, need to indentify with something with the film. i listed examples of what i connected with in RRR. yes, it is american AF but what in hell is wrong with that? i get a pleasureable movie experience as well as something new to learn. comparisons will always be made as our little globe gets smaller.

@@shelly_lee i was appreciating your response to this video and shared my opinion to this video creators. My response was not meant for you. That is my point exactly. Movies are supposed to be for entertainment but not for finding flaws in it as if they were given a task to validate the movie as per the standards of Hollywood. My point is to make them understand that there is a different approach of film making in India like including dance numbers, over the top action scenes, borrowing stories heavily from Hindu mythology. Creators like film critics Calling it overrated implies there judgement cover by Hollywood movies.
This doesn't imply for only Indian movies but also Japanese/ Chinese/ Korean movies for example and comparing them with style of Hollywood movies bothers me. I hope you understand what I meant.

@@SaltyNerdPodcast Little girl was not his sister , In india we say it for proper respect. You will love this movie more if u deeply analyze every metaphoric reference of this movie cuz SS Rajamouli shows a movie with less cool dialogue, in his movies the imagery talks more than dialogue... I have analyzed some deep meanings of some scenes and there are more scenes like these The whole bridge sequence is cool but at the same time, It also summarizes the whole movie plot. Ram's mission is regarding the country (jumps with a Flag) and Bheem's mission is to save the child from his tribe (jumps to get the child) and in this journey, they exchange their missions (exchange of flag and child) and eventually succeed helping each other. The chariot was on fire cuz when Ram came, the place was full of wild animals and the animals are afraid of Fire so to get rid of animals on his way to Bheem, he did that and here came with director 1000 10, it also: represents that Ram is a Fire. want to tell u something about Water and Fire: Somebody asked Rajamouli why he chooses Water & Fire as a friend it is never possible cuz they r opposites and don't like each other. Rajamouli replied that they r opposites but if they come together and work with each other they can do amazing things like they can create steam which can run the motor of this whole world. 1. There is a scene during the friendship montage playing when both of them run beside the train, and the train releases steam. Most people will think it is just for looking gorgeous but it is not. The thing is when water( Bheem) & fire(Ram) come together they create steam. It is the reference and also looks beautiful. 2. When the INTERRRVAL title card was about to come, there was a scene where the blood drops on Ram's hand from his eye and it creates steam if u look deeply u will see that. There are many references can't tell more. In his movies, he does not add any cool dialogue he just shows imagery and reference. If u see then u will not see any cool dialogues in his movies...his movie making is different And in his movie a hero is a hero who has no limits, he's not here to describe anyone about realistic, physics-fail things

I stumbled across RRR through Netflix over the holidays. I had never heard of it or either of the incredibly beautiful lead actors but they were so hunky I was inspired to watch the entire movie. Now I have watched pieces of it over and over and over again. I’ve watched Bheem (NTR Jr) chased through the jungle by wolves and huge tigers SO many times! just as I’ve rewatched Ram Charan’s backlit transformation into a semi-God with an infallible fired up bow and arrow multiple times! But when the two men combine their fighting expertise with Ram (who has been tortured and can no longer walk) on top of NTR’s broad shoulders I was completely mesmerized! And I haven’t even mentioned the Naatu Naatu dance number that for the first time in history won an Oscar for an Indian film! It felt like a brand new movie genre to me that was better than any Marvel movie or a totally CGI’d action flick. This combined unparalleled non-stop athleticism, bromance, music, action and pathos. It is the most fun movie I’ve seen in forever. And it has also inspired me to watch every other movie Ram Charan has made that has English subtitles. NTR and Ram Charan are going to be HUGE in the US.

Its got ZERO of the Bollywood vibe. No songs or dance at all. No action. No filmy dialogue. Just a true historical event and its story told in a documentary style. Other than that one episode of Band of Brothers (episode titled "Why we Fight" where they liberate the concentration camp), this movie is the only thing that made me cry. Other than these two things, I've never cried watching anything: movie, TV series, documentary, anime, etc. Its a story that deserves to be told just as much as the WW2 Jewish holocaust, but is never told.
      .
*Sardar Udham* is the perfect companion film to RRR because its a real take of what the British Empire was like in India, unlike the stylized version that is in RRR. In RRR, British are portrayed as 1-dminesional villains. In Sardar Udham, they are displayed raw, like normal people. The movie, unlike RRR, tells their side of the story, their justifications for what they did. And yet I felt that the true evil in the British intentions came through much more clearly in Sardar Udham than in RRR.

When the story unveils, the director makes sure to show the bad guys as evil as possible that the audience would want the good guy to smack the bad guy at the end. The director charges you emotionally with the story, which makes your brain stop thinking logically. Now it's time for you to see what you wish - the victory over evil.

Some details about the movie characters & Historical backstory:
Originally Alluri Sita Rama Raju, wasn't a tribal himself, he went into forests for helping tribals, actually used to wear Saffron clothing and used bow & arrows resembling Hindu god "RAM" (was also a sharp shooter) It was his approach to stand as a symbol of inspiration for tribals to revolt (known as Rampa Rebellion, with motto "Mande Rajyam" which translates to.. Ours is this kingdom) against British in Visakhapatnam agency. (Some believe that Alluri Rama Raju taking "Sanyas" (divine way of living) after death of his love Sita, was the reason for his Saffron attire). Sita really was his lover's name and after her death he changed his name from Alluri Rama Raju to Alluri Sita Rama Raju.
Born in the West-Godavari (a district of present Indian state Andhra Pradesh), in a Telugu Kshatriya family to Alluri Venkata Rama Raju and his wife Suryanarayanamma, after his parents died (when he was 12) was raised by his uncle Rama krishnam Raju. He was a well educated, civilized man who felt that the tribals are the ones being suppressed the most by british, and went to forests and dedicated his entire life for helping them fight british, although wasn't a tribal himself.
He used to do guerilla raids on British police stations (after informing & challenging them that he's going to come & attack and stop him if they can) and collect guns & weapons, using an army of armed tribals by training them.
It's said that it costed more than a million even in those days, for the british to finally find and execute him. They killed Rama Raju unethically while he's unarmed, performing a morning Prayer.
Komaram Bheem, a tribal himself from gond tribes of Adilabad (a district of the present Indian state "Telangana") is rumoured to be an extremely strong man, and to hunt a tiger by himself. He used to wear muslim disguises during his revolt against Nizam. He died fighting the Nizam's of Bhagyanagaram (Present day Hyderabad)
In Telugu states (Andhra, Telangana) everyone knows these things, maybe not in other states. They were referred as Sri Ram and Bheemasen (since long back before the movie even existed !!) from their names and features (Rama Raju's- Saffron Attire, his lover's name is "Sita", both are Kshatriyas, both went to forests and made an army using tribals, men of extreme commitment, Komaram Bheem- Physical strength, Crude attacking nature, Perseverance) being similar to characteristics of Lord Ram from Ramayanam and Bheem from Mahabharatam and out of the level of reverence they've achieved from people.
Both left their homes almost in the same period and then returned after some time and started their revolutions against British and Nizam respectively. After returning home, Rama Raju started wearing Saffron clothing till the day he died fighting for tribals, and Bheem came back as an educated man and started his rebellion with motto.. Jal, Jangal, Jameen.. with translates to Water, Forest & Soil..
As no one has a clear idea about what happened to them in that period when they left, and what made them become revolutionaries.. the movie writer wrote a Fictional story that they met and became friends and Bheem was the one who gave Rama Raju a Saffron attire and that he got educated himself from Rama Raju, connecting everything that was remembered in telugu people hearts.. if we see carefully, we can see all these details used in the movie clearly.. The mythological references are used in bgms.. as these freedom fighters are actually revered by referring them as Lord Sri Rama and Bheemasen.. in many parts of Telugu states...
    Other details :
-Rama Raju is also referred by people as "Manyam Dhora".. which translates to King/Chief of the Wild Forests and Komaram Bheem is praised as "Gondu Bebbuli".. which translates to Ferocious Tiger of Gond tribes. These names are also referred in the Original (Telugu or Tollywood) version of movie, which is on Disney plus Hotstar & zee5. The one in Netflix is Hindi dubbed (bollywood) version.
-Also The Indian Flag used throughout the movie was the older Berlin Committee Flag (designed by Madame Bhikaji Cama, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma) corresponding to the time period.
(Current Indian flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya, also from Telugu land)
-The bike used by Bheem was the older world war version which were designed lightweight for men to lift and carry them when required.
-Names of Freedom fighters shown in the rrr movie ending song & which indian state they belong to & their language :
-Subhash Chandra Bose (state west bengal/ orissa, language Bengali)
-Sardar Vallabhai Patel (state Gujarat, language Gujarati)
-Kittur Rani Chennamma (state Karnataka, language kannada)
-V.O.Chidambharam pillai (state Tamil nadu, language Tamil)
-Bhagat Singh (state Punjab, language Punjabi)
-Tanguturi Prakasam panthulu (also RRR Heroes Alluri SitaRama Raju & Komaram Bheem) (state Andhra, language Telugu)
-Varma Pazhassi Raja (state Kerala, language malayalam)
-Chatrapathi Sivaji (state Maharashtra, language Marathi)

The tollywood is two section one in south and one in Bengal this is tollywood ( Telugu language ) movie from south india . However it was dubbed in all indian languages by the main actors and accurately translated by the writing team authentic lyrics .
Netflix has the Hindi dubbed which is the most authentic and one of the best. It's a multi lingual movie and all indian language dubs are as authentic ...
However in all dub there are some Hindi spoken .
Ram's entry scene was with real 2000 ppl crowd
Both the actors are huge mega stars the director who is one of the best wanted to make a multi starter with two stars who are also close friends and they are so they said yes, one of the best dancers. It's the Indian movie . Brotherhood and offscreen bond is very true . Also he designed the characters based on their nature
RRR was the work title , combining the names of the three super powers
ss Rajamouli Ram Charan , Nt Rama Rao jr but fans loved it and used it so it's Rise Roar Revolt . T
Major section speaks Hindi so dubbed version r good actors took 25 days to dub in 5 languages.
You can call it movie from Indian cinema
    🔥🌊
The core of the story is emotions . And friendship/brotherhood . Director wanted audience to empathise with both the characters equally.

@36:50 It does seem like plot convenience, but I think a lot of writing depth went into this, 1. In the crazy animals fight at the party in the end Raju tells bheem that if he does not stop they will kill the little girl, so from that point bheem is not really at his physically fighting best form until the end when the little girl is safe.2. Also the betrayal by ram does take an emotional toll on bheem(notice he does not kill him when he could have). Also, you guys have been pronouncing bheem wrong.

I'm happy that RRR is getting this recognition because we have many more gems in Indian cinema, most of em even better than RRR. I thought the abilities of the main characters were consistent throughout the movie, at least compared to most other Indian action films.
From their introductions, we know that Raju is intelligent, strong, resilient, and can jump high. And we know that Bheem is stronger, more resilient, and can also jump high.
Bheem's strength displayed throughout the movie never allows him to just break off his chains and prison cell when in captivity when being surrounded by armed guards. If that was the case, he would have attacked Scott's mansion alone without the animals which were needed for distraction and chaos. And even when he broke Ram out of prison, he ripped the cage off the hinges rather than breaking the metal, and as for the armed guards, he had Raju's support, who knows how to use guns and fight back. And the motorcycles are army motorcycles, which are like 60kg or something, which is still ridiculous, but it doesn't go far beyond Bheem's established abilities.

Indeed. They are superheroes, but they don't possess "superhuman" powers - no flying, invulnerability, super-sight/hearing, Flash-like speed etc. It's more the case that they have _enhanced_ human powers.
And the motorcycle is the Royal Enfield "Flying Flea" which was dropped in by parachute, weighing in, as you indicate, at just under 60kg (130lb) - nothing than would actually require superhuman strength to lift, albeit wielding it as a weapon would certainly enter into that territory!

And when the tiger goes unconscious he says to it I am sorry I am using you for my goal but I need to do this. So they have been collecting these animals for the plan. In the friendship montage when they show a huge slab of meat Ram's fellow officer thinks all that food is for Bheem and jokes about it and Raju laughs and defends his friend that it's good he has a good appetite. This was such an entertaining podcast. This was i think the first time i sat through an entire 1hr podcast and listen to people talk about a movie i have already watched and discuss it from a different view point. Next you should definitely watch the Baahubali 1,2 both parts by same director. That was one of the biggest movie at that time. Hopefully Indian movies should have better dubbing in English and even songs too so that everyone around the world can enjoy what Indian cinema have to offer.

Regarding their healing powers, Bheem gave Raju the antidote for the snake venom, time passed after Raju flogged Bheem so he had time to heal before he was supposed to be executed, and between the escape and the forrest fight, Bheem healed Raju with some leaves (and also dressed him up like Rama 😆) but yeah, they heal pretty fast 🤣🤣 Also, Bheem and Malli arent siblings. Asians just call anyone older than them brother/ sister or Auntie and Uncle out of respect.

@25:00 , Hey guys! The idea of the dance numbers is pretty much embedded within the Indian Culture, as a mark of celebration or the propagation of the imminent community harmony. We Indians are suckers for poetry, music, dance and extravaganza, so the making of the movie defined is attached with the sensibilities of the Sub continent. Moreover, never in the wildest dreams did anyone of us (even @SS Rajamouli himself) forecasted that the movie would be an appreciated favourite from the land of Hollywood. And what's a movie without it being a unique and different cinematic experience anyway?😄

Watched you guys for the first time enjoyed your love and passion for Cinema, likewise I watch cinema from every corner of the globe too. Firstly india has lots of languages and regions and Tollywood is one such region from Andhra where we speak Telgu hence the name. We recently back home are trying to blur the lines of regional Cinema and just emphasis on Indian Cinema.
To your observations in the podcast above the scene with the wild animals just before the interval is actually very brilliantly woven in the script. In the introduction scene of Bheem he is shown trying to trap a jackal in his trap, by pouring blood on his head to attract the beast however a Tiger is also seeking bheem form the shrubs, when he is running, in the wide shots, he looks at the footprint below to realise there could a tiger around hence the tiger and the jackal have a 2 second squirmish, after which the tiger resumes to chase bheem which he is eventually able to capture and subdue. Then during the bromance song which the bearded dude on ur podcast loved, raju and his friend see Bheem taking a leg of a cow and they funily say will this be enough to feed bheem but the cow leg is then pushed down a closed door where u can hear the roar of an animal thus building to the scene that bheem has some animals in a storage. But yes that scene of the animals at the givernors bungalow is the best set peices ever in any movie, totally unexpected.
To your buddy's next observation when bheem is whppped and his knees broken they show he is in the jail cell for weeks before they announce he has to be hung.
The last song during the credits introduces the entire cast and in the background and there are epic statues of Some of Indias greatest freedom fighters ever from various regions.
Lastly Ramcharan who plays Raju like u guys rightly discussed is a bliionaire and a heart trob for millions of Indians his father also is a super star.
Bheem played junior NTR is also the grandson of the great NTR one of the most iconic actors of India ever. These two guys coming together for this blockbuster was the vision of another daddy the director SS Rajamouli sir he is daddy that's all.i ahve to say
You guys should see his other works Bahubali 1 and banhubali 2 on netflix the highest grossing Indain movies ever.

This movie is after the world war 1920's the time's motorbike were just cycled with an engine
It weighed only 59 kg wet (ie with oil & fuel) and was so light that it could be dismantled, lifted, and transported to various battlefield operation areas. Its portability was the most significant convenience and helped soldiers cross fences or ditches as it could simply be lifted

After each big fight scene where there are serious injuries… there is a long time gap for them to heal which you guys are not realising… for example
Raju after the escape from prison with leg injuries gets treated by Bheem, by the time of final jungle fight scene, he has a big beard which tells you it took time to heal. Similarly there are other nuances which makes it a bit believable which for sure western audiences will miss.
The songs are very poetic which turns out very bland with translation.
the final song is almost like a ‘thank you for watching’ song which also pays tribute to the Indian freedom fighters. The father figure bearded guy who came in the song is the director SS Rajamouli

He criticized that the animals came out of nowhere for the palace attack until he was reminded that Bheem was shown capturing animals at the start of movie. Then he said, okay, but when did he feed them? He was again reminded that it was shown during Ram and Bheem's friendship sequence. He didn't even know that there was a song at the movie's end.

Indian films aren't from a single film industry.
India has a set of "Film industries" in it. it's rich diversity in languages spoken within the same country resulted in multiple film industries within the single country. It's an Indian way "Unity in Diversity". each of these film industries have some great movies (along with average ones and disasters)
The name bollywood which was earlier thought by some as the "Indian Film industry" (there's no such thing) is just the industry corresponding to language Hindi... and accounts to only 1/5 of yearly Indian films.
The movies.. "RRR", "Baahubali 1 & 2" are from the Industry corresponding to language "Telugu".
(TFI - Telugu Film Industry or Tollywood).
referring as.. "A Telugu film from India" or just " A movie from Indian Film Industries ".. is very appropriate.. cause there are more than 5 major Film industries within India.
