I don't think Aretha had any issues with Arista. Aretha did what she wanted to do and she was already well established in her career. Clive just helped reinvented her career in the 80's and 90's. Aretha didn't tour like that and she would cancel dates without notice and would get sue by promoters. Aretha had money problems before Arista. Read the David Ritz book on Aretha. Aretha was irresponsible when it came to her business and financial affairs. Her will wasn't even in placed before she died. Her family found hand written wills tucked away in couches.

The story of Whitney Houston is actually a tragedy. She was manipulated and tricked into being a lifelong slave of Arista while a teennager and used and leeched off of by those she loved and trusted most. Heartbreaking and sickening.
Her life and her story is also a TRIUMPH. She brought Heaven to Earth with her musicianship and love. Her life was a culmination of generations of Black American survival, success, and cultivation of artistic brilliance. She shared a great gift that has forever “moved the needle” for the progress of the human race. As we experience the glimpse of heavenly power she brought to us, we many “disciples” of Whitney are inspired to pursue our own greatness - not just as singers- I have heard lawyers and social workers also call Whitney the “voice of their life.” To see a life of genius lived so loudly, proudly, and worldwide, and to call it anything but a triumph, is a challenge for me. Whitney said it felt like FLYING to do what she did. Many people live twice as long and never fly once 💔
I think when she did that last tour she probably realized who her true fans were. Because if they were really her fans they would have never walked out on her like that or expected her to sing the same way she did in her younger years. I chose not to go to her last tour as a 'real fan', out of respect. Same with Amy. I didn't go and see her when it was all too obvious that she shouldn't be touring in the condition she was in. Sometimes fans have to be accountable as well.
She should have never done that tour. Honestly, her my love is your love tour should been the last major tour she did. After that, she should have only done small mini tours with no more than 10 shows, in a smaller setting. However, when you're a slave to the industry, you basically have to do what they tell you to. Her story is the definition of the music industry taking a true gift from God and ruining the person with that gift. Like the demons they are, they took and sucked the life out of her until she was of no use and offed her. Scary stuff
I put off watching this part because I knew it would break my heart all over again. I can't help but wonder who she would've been if she was just allowed to be herself and work on her own terms. She was literally worked into the ground and nobody seemed to care until it was too late.
Whitney was a Treasure, but everyone treated her as a cash cow, money making machine. But she was a fragile human with Great gift. One thing is to be taken advantage of by industry, the other thing is to be abused by your own mother, father, brothers and husband. This kind of talent comes one time in million years. She was human! Some us struggle with basic day to day expectations! Imagine having the immense pressure she had to live with. That is why it ended the way it dead. She drowned in her sorrows and abuse from the industry and fans making her feel not good enough. It was gift hearing her voice even at its worst!

I cannot wait to dive into this video!! Whitney sounded so well at the beginning of the of her last tour. Those clips at the Russian concert were giving MLIYL vibes. However, that tour was far too ambitious, far too long and had no interest in Whitney’s health and wanted to squeeze every last cent out of her, dehumanising her and causing total exhaustion. I read Whitney wanted to do a pulled back unplugged style tour with just a piano and guitar and play with her voice and not be bend to ransom by her old voice, but we never got to see that. Whitney has been gone for so long, yet she would only be 60 now. We lost her far too young and it hurts my soul when I see Mariah and Celina at the Grammys while Whitney only resides in our minds
That tour shouldn't have happened. Whitney was in no shape to have a full concert, let alone A TOUR. But now it makes sense why she had to do it. It was because the disgusting moochers surrounding her wanted the cash.

Physicality is really an underemphasized aspect of singing - especially when discussing singers who've experienced a decline be they Houston or Carey, Callas or Voight. Random, but I've started to feel a big reason why Beyoncé has had a minimal decline relatively for a fast-tracked pop singer is physicality. I recently rewatched a tour video of hers, and her fitness is probably just shy of an actual professional athlete. Keeping a strong body and cardiovascular system is super important to prevent bad habits and the onset of straining, wobbling, etc etc.
Damn, there is no greater hate than a family love. Family abuse, shaky marriage, 4 miscarriages, tabloids scrutiny, how could she escape that substance abuse ? She fell, got back up, tried again. I respect her even more now 😢. I loved this! Honestly over the years I’ve gone back and watched her last tour and she actually had a lot of good nights. I would have loved to see her live during her final years. She will always be the Voice.
This was a great video about her last years. She was a phenomenal vocalist. Obviously, she made horrible choices in her personal life, which led her to an early demise. But she’s always a legend. I’m glad you point out how Chaka and others changed their techniques to a more nasal, whinny sound. Whitney never changed her technique, she always stayed chest coordinated. Which is the best singing in my opinion. But again, she just ruined her life early from poor decisions and ppl using her. Damn shame. RIP

I rarely comment your videos because I just can't find the right words to bring justice to your work. But your work is a pure masterpiece. At least, I had to say that. I didn't get the chance to discover Whitney's music by the time she was still there with us, but she's definitely among the few singers that have transcended the world with their voice, their talent, their gift and so much more. Also, when you were talking about hearing the process of aging on singer's voices, I couldn't help but think about Barbra Streisand's case. If I remember, her voice between 90's and 2000's was undeniably different, so maybe it could give one example of what a grown "old" woman, that I think preserved her voice the best she could, sounds ? I mean, that was a thought that crossed my mind at that moment. But once again, wonderful job, amazing video !
I love hearing singers who are more mature sing their older material cause it usually hits different from the original song. After a certain age good performers just retire I'm talking people who don't need all the bells and whistles to put on a good show. I'm grateful for the ones that are still performing cause its certainly more difficult now that they're older.

I've always known Whitney's family was toxic, but I never realized how much they lived off her for so long. I didn't know that she had to work harder than she needed and had to go on extensive tours more than she wanted because people around her were robbing her of her hard-earned fortune. The more I learn about how her family and friends took advantage of her generosity, the more I realize how much she was surrounded by disgusting freeloaders and the worse I feel for her.

I used to see feel like Whitney’s life was a tragedy. But now I no longer see it that way. Although she left us some 12 years ago her music is still pivotal in the culture. I listened to her music so much sometimes I forget that she’s gone. Nonetheless, what I have learned from this documentary series is that when it comes to singing the industry, your management, even your own family can push you beyond your limits and so it’s important to know what your boundaries are and make sure they are never crossed because ultimately no one is going to look out for you better than yourself.

I bought her last album when it came out and enjoyed it. Such a beautiful and fun album! I was sending her good vibes and hoping it was just the beginning of a happier, healthier Whitney. So devastated that it was the end. And who bought tickets to a late 2000s Whitney concert and really thought they were gonna hear Bodyguard era IWALY? Common sense should have told them to expect a significantly changed woman. Also I thought I was a bit morbid for watching those performances on CZcams. It's a relief to know that I'm not crazy for enjoying seeing her tackle her back catalogue with her mature, post-prime voice.
WOW! So much of what I deduced from pure speculation is confirmed with your conclusions. I always argue that she never lost her voice, it just became increasingly inconsistent. During that last tour, like you pointed out, there would be these moments where it just all of a sudden soared and I would love to see the joy it brought her. I also noticed the nights she felt better vocally she would also be more "Whitney-like" which speaks to the mental aspect of it all. The moment in particular I love the most is during I Love The Lord in Milano... she got lost in worship and her voice just cleared up and she belted and growled like young Whitney... and afterwards she just looks off and says "Yeah!". A huge portion of it was the pressure she had on her and that had to affect her mentally. ALSO, I totally agree that more than the actual drugs themselves, the majority of her vocal decline was due to overuse and cigarettes. I can say that I personally enjoy Whitney's matured voice most. I loved the early stages of the rasp, especially mixing it with vibrato. I LOVE her MLIYL Tour vocals! There was just a fire that she had. The few years leading up to the tour, it seemed she was struggling with the change in her voice, but its like she figured it out and OWNED the changes during the tour. I feel she really mastered her mixed voice to make up for the lack of sheer upper belts. And 2004 WAS a good year considering the few years before. It seemed she had regained some of the "bigness" that wasn't there during MLIYL. I loved "If I Told You That" during this time. And the Love Medley, and her Luther Tribute (Never Too Much/Superstar) were AMAZING!

Great analysis as usual, BAM. I didn't get the notification for this even though I've hit the bell. Whitney was disappointed by.so many people in her life. She had the solo career Cissy always wanted for herself, a father she took care of who would steal from her and who had the nerve to sue her for.100 million dollars, and also her other family members and Bobby's family, and her employees she was financially supporting. She also dealt with an accountant who stole so much money from her and a record company that exploited her. That contract signing scene in the Whjtney movie spooked me. It reminded me of the billion year contract some scientologists sign. Those overseas 'fans' were so rude to Whitney during a tough time in her life. Whitney was truly a professional and very strong because many performers would have left the stage when they got booed. She finished her performances, which I know had to be so hard for her. She was truly a survivor through all the ups and downs of her career.

I've waited patiently for part 3......Since I watched it all the way to the end, let me start off by saying if you listen to Whitney's last album, "I look To You" from begining to end, she sounds good. There might have been a technique the producers did in the studio so she wouldn't have sound as bad. I could be wrong though. Whitney shouldn't have never went on tour for her last album but i know she needed the money. At least her vocal coach did helped her get some of her voice back but it wasn't the same voice like it was in the 80's and 90's. I like how you edited this video Milik. I hated seeing her on that Nothing But Love tour in 2010. I know her mental health had to be horrible behind the scenes after every show for those 6 months. Yes there a few good vocal moments, but overall that tour was a train wreck. And knowing for a fact people (employees in your camp & the whole world) are talking about how bad and horrible you sound takes a major toll on your mental as a singer. Especially when you are the WHITNEY HOUSTON. When you were known as the best and nobody could touch you vocally to now resorting to sounding like that. I knew she was devastated in her later years. From what I heard from someone that was in her camp on that tour, her mindset was ‘It is what it is.’ Those cigarettes are the devil. They rip your vocals cords out and causes sooo much permanent damage. RIP Whitney! Sir, I really do enjoy watching your musical series. Keep up the great work! ❤

Amazing series! I learned so so so much about her and her voice from it. I’ve never seen a more in depth analysis of her anywhere else! Literally doing god’s work. I wish people were more understanding, appreciative, and grateful during the “I look to you” tour. It saddens me to see the way she was treated by the public and media when she was giving them great shows! Nobody can do it like her and if you really love her you’d see that she still has a lot of what made us fall in love with her. It’s not that I’m surprised by it because I remember that time clearly… but the people didn’t deserve her.

People always wanted to keep her as a 21-30yr old self and sound and she has grown passed that time. Then add on her years of abuse especially from smoking. Whitney voice on her good days during the ILTY Tour,was very reminiscent to her Late 90’s even 2004 tonality. I am a Whitney fan through and through. Good bad or indifferent. And the other statement you made about how she felt about singing certain songs,it came out in her tone of voice during that song and it showed. Whitney Houston was a rare and stunning piece of human history for all of us to witness. For me personally, I am honored to have grown up listening to her discography. The tragedy for me, is that Whitney suffered while everyone around her prospered, this includes Clive Davis. Whitney is someone who I truly feel we will never hear another like her. Her gift, was truly a once in a lifetime experience for all of her fans and listeners. May she rest in peace.
This here is my favourite singer in the whole world. But this docu-series is right; Whitney Houston was more of an emotional singer than she was a purely technical one. As she aged, she grew to resent the girly How Will I Know era of her singing, because she really wasn't a girl anymore- at least not for long. I Will Always Love You worked because at that age (27/28) she was thinking very heavily about marriage. She couldn't be that same woman as a divorcee. That's why that song was hard for her towards the end. I never really considered that before...
Solid points. She was more emotional than purely technical, so maybe she didn't want to or consider switching her voice like Chaka, or it wasn't proposed to her, but her troubles were too many up until the end.

What a great and profund documentary about Withney s carreer and development. I have hugh sympathy and respect for her. I wished she would had seen this docu, she was such an unbelievable singer, such a variety and pure talent, we will never see again. What is very shocking, how the record producers and labels, abused and took advantage of her in a scandalous way. We will never forget her....

I don't think Aretha had any issues with Arista. Aretha did what she wanted to do and she was already well established in her career. Clive just helped reinvented her career in the 80's and 90's. Aretha didn't tour like that and she would cancel dates without notice and would get sue by promoters. Aretha had money problems before Arista. Read the David Ritz book on Aretha. Aretha was irresponsible when it came to her business and financial affairs. Her will wasn't even in placed before she died. Her family found hand written wills tucked away in couches.

I chose not to go to her last tour as a 'real fan', out of respect. Same with Amy. I didn't go and see her when it was all too obvious that she shouldn't be touring in the condition she was in. Sometimes fans have to be accountable as well.
She should have never done that tour. Honestly, her my love is your love tour should been the last major tour she did. After that, she should have only done small mini tours with no more than 10 shows, in a smaller setting. However, when you're a slave to the industry, you basically have to do what they tell you to. Her story is the definition of the music industry taking a true gift from God and ruining the person with that gift. Like the demons they are, they took and sucked the life out of her until she was of no use and offed her. Scary stuff

I put off watching this part because I knew it would break my heart all over again. I can't help but wonder who she would've been if she was just allowed to be herself and work on her own terms. She was literally worked into the ground and nobody seemed to care until it was too late.

She was human! Some us struggle with basic day to day expectations! Imagine having the immense pressure she had to live with. That is why it ended the way it dead. She drowned in her sorrows and abuse from the industry and fans making her feel not good enough. It was gift hearing her voice even at its worst!

I cannot wait to dive into this video!! Whitney sounded so well at the beginning of the of her last tour. Those clips at the Russian concert were giving MLIYL vibes. However, that tour was far too ambitious, far too long and had no interest in Whitney’s health and wanted to squeeze every last cent out of her, dehumanising her and causing total exhaustion.
I read Whitney wanted to do a pulled back unplugged style tour with just a piano and guitar and play with her voice and not be bend to ransom by her old voice, but we never got to see that.

That tour shouldn't have happened. Whitney was in no shape to have a full concert, let alone A TOUR. But now it makes sense why she had to do it. It was because the disgusting moochers surrounding her wanted the cash.

9:00 I'm so glad you covered this. Physicality is really an underemphasized aspect of singing - especially when discussing singers who've experienced a decline be they Houston or Carey, Callas or Voight.
Random, but I've started to feel a big reason why Beyoncé has had a minimal decline relatively for a fast-tracked pop singer is physicality. I recently rewatched a tour video of hers, and her fitness is probably just shy of an actual professional athlete. Keeping a strong body and cardiovascular system is super important to prevent bad habits and the onset of straining, wobbling, etc etc.
I suspect you're right about Beyonce. She is really fit, so that counterbalances any family or other challenges, at least on stage singing.
Damn, there is no greater hate than a family love. Family abuse, shaky marriage, 4 miscarriages, tabloids scrutiny, how could she escape that substance abuse ? She fell, got back up, tried again. I rarely comment your videos because I just can't find the right words to bring justice to your work. But your work is a pure masterpiece. At least, I had to say that. I didn't get the chance to discover Whitney's music by the time she was still there with us, but she's definitely among the few singers that have transcended the world with their voice, their talent, their gift and so much more.
Also, when you were talking about hearing the process of aging on singer's voices, I couldn't help but think about Barbra Streisand's case. If I remember, her voice between 90's and 2000's was undeniably different, so maybe it could give one example of what a grown "old" woman, that I think preserved her voice the best she could, sounds ? I mean, that was a thought that crossed my mind at that moment.

I love hearing singers who are more mature sing their older material cause it usually hits different from the original song. After a certain age good performers just retire I'm talking people who don't need all the bells and whistles to put on a good show. I'm grateful for the ones that are still performing cause its certainly more difficult now that they're older.

I've always known Whitney's family was toxic, but I never realized how much they lived off her for so long. I didn't know that she had to work harder than she needed and had to go on extensive tours more than she wanted because people around her were robbing her of her hard-earned fortune. The more I learn about how her family and friends took advantage of her generosity, the more I realize how much she was surrounded by disgusting freeloaders and the worse I feel for her.
You did your big one with this series! The empathy and delicate tone of how you tackle these stories inject so much life and humanity into viewing these prominent figures. I appreciate your work and thank you for educating and challenging us to appreciate the artform of singing in all stages of a performer's life.
Seeing Whitney, especially in her later years, makes me smile. I feel like she was a good lady, supportive of up and coming singers and no longer willing to hide a little bit of feistiness. I don't believe most people should be defined by their mistakes, but instead should be celebrated for their triumphs and how they bounce back. That's why we love Whitney! I used to see feel like Whitney’s life was a tragedy. But now I no longer see it that way. Although she left us some 12 years ago her music is still pivotal in the culture. I listened to her music so much sometimes I forget that she’s gone. Nonetheless, what I have learned from this documentary series is that when it comes to singing the industry, your management, even your own family can push you beyond your limits and so it’s important to know what your boundaries are and make sure they are never crossed because ultimately no one is going to look out for you better than yourself.

I bought her last album when it came out and enjoyed it. Such a beautiful and fun album! I was sending her good vibes and hoping it was just the beginning of a happier, healthier Whitney. So devastated that it was the end.
And who bought tickets to a late 2000s Whitney concert and really thought they were gonna hear Bodyguard era IWALY? Common sense should have told them to expect a significantly changed woman. Also I thought I was a bit morbid for watching those performances on CZcams. It's a relief to know that I'm not crazy for enjoying seeing her tackle her back catalogue with her mature, post-prime voice.
WOW! So much of what I deduced from pure speculation is confirmed with your conclusions. I always argue that she never lost her voice, it just became increasingly inconsistent. During that last tour, like you pointed out, there would be these moments where it just all of a sudden soared and I would love to see the joy it brought her. I also noticed the nights she felt better vocally she would also be more "Whitney-like" which speaks to the mental aspect of it all. The moment in particular I love the most is during I Love The Lord in Milano... she got lost in worship and her voice just cleared up and she belted and growled like young Whitney... and afterwards she just looks off and says "Yeah!". A huge portion of it was the pressure she had on her and that had to affect her mentally. ALSO, I totally agree that more than the actual drugs themselves, the majority of her vocal decline was due to overuse and cigarettes.
I can say that I personally enjoy Whitney's matured voice most. I loved the early stages of the rasp, especially mixing it with vibrato. I LOVE her MLIYL Tour vocals! There was just a fire that she had. The few years leading up to the tour, it seemed she was struggling with the change in her voice, but its like she figured it out and OWNED the changes during the tour. I feel she really mastered her mixed voice to make up for the lack of sheer upper belts.
And 2004 WAS a good year considering the few years before. It seemed she had regained some of the "bigness" that wasn't there during MLIYL. I loved "If I Told You That" during this time. And the Love Medley, and her Luther Tribute (Never Too Much/Superstar) were AMAZING!
This video deserves a prestigous exemplatory award. So detailed, so informative. It tackles not just the music and behind it but the personand life she went through. Great analysis as usual, BAM. I didn't get the notification for this even though I've hit the bell. Whitney was disappointed by.so many people in her life. She had the solo career Cissy always wanted for herself, a father she took care of who would steal from her and who had the nerve to sue her for.100 million dollars, and also her other family members and Bobby's family, and her employees she was financially supporting. She also dealt with an accountant who stole so much money from her and a record company that exploited her. That contract signing scene in the Whjtney movie spooked me. It reminded me of the billion year contract some scientologists sign. Those overseas 'fans' were so rude to Whitney during a tough time in her life. Whitney was truly a professional and very strong because many performers would have left the stage when they got booed. She finished her performances, which I know had to be so hard for her. She was truly a survivor through all the ups and downs of her career.

I've waited patiently for part 3......Since I watched it all the way to the end, let me start off by saying if you listen to Whitney's last album, "I look To You" from begining to end, she sounds good. There might have been a technique the producers did in the studio so she wouldn't have sound as bad. I could be wrong though. Whitney shouldn't have never went on tour for her last album but i know she needed the money. At least her vocal coach did helped her get some of her voice back but it wasn't the same voice like it was in the 80's and 90's. I like how you edited this video Milik. I hated seeing her on that Nothing But Love tour in 2010. I know her mental health had to be horrible behind the scenes after every show for those 6 months. Yes there a few good vocal moments, but overall that tour was a train wreck. And knowing for a fact people (employees in your camp & the whole world) are talking about how bad and horrible you sound takes a major toll on your mental as a singer. Especially when you are the WHITNEY HOUSTON. When you were known as the best and nobody could touch you vocally to now resorting to sounding like that. I knew she was devastated in her later years. From what I heard from someone that was in her camp on that tour, her mindset was ‘It is what it is.’ Those cigarettes are the devil. They rip your vocals cords out and causes sooo much permanent damage. RIP Whitney!

People always wanted to keep her as a 21-30yr old self and sound and she has grown passed that time. Then add on her years of abuse especially from smoking. Whitney gave us so much outstanding remarkable historical music both live and recorded BUT she was human and we all were EXPECTING something from her in one way or another. Let’s just be honest. That is too much for anyone to handle. She and her voice WERE a national treasure and a gift from The LORD that in my opinion we did not truly appreciate her, especially in her time of need. No one could interpret and emote a song quite like she could and make it sound heavenly not to mention that she also was an extraordinary beautiful woman to see. We could have loved her better and I cannot recall her being “ missing “ from making music and releasing new music ever. Seems like she tried to make and keep everyone happy both her fans,music labels and of course her family. That shows that she was not selfish but extremely giving and sensitive to the how she felt about people and wanted to demonstrate it. Giving gave her joy. She was a human being but we wouldn’t let her just be. All them soundtrack she did when they claimed she was “missing”??? She never stopped working. Again, I absolutely love the entire series and I thank you for doing this about a person who deserves it. You are amazing bro! Many kudos and blessings 👏🏽🙏🏾

Whitney Houston was a rare and stunning piece of human history for all of us to witness. For me personally, I am honored to have grown up listening to her discography. The tragedy for me, is that Whitney suffered while everyone around her prospered, this includes Clive Davis. Whitney is someone who I truly feel we will never hear another like her. Her gift, was truly a once in a lifetime experience for all of her fans and listeners. May she rest in peace.
This here is my favourite singer in the whole world. But this docu-series is right; Whitney Houston was more of an emotional singer than she was a purely technical one. As she aged, she grew to resent the girly How Will I Know era of her singing, because she really wasn't a girl anymore- at least not for long. I Will Always Love You worked because at that age (27/28) she was thinking very heavily about marriage. She couldn't be that same woman as a divorcee. That's why that song was hard for her towards the end. I never really considered that before...
Solid points. She was more emotional than purely technical, so maybe she didn't want to or consider switching her voice like Chaka, or it wasn't proposed to her, but her troubles were too many up until the end.

What a great and profund documentary about Withney s carreer and development. I have hugh sympathy and respect for her. I wished she would had seen this docu, she was such an unbelievable singer, such a variety and pure talent, we will never see again. What is very shocking, how the record producers and labels, abused and took advantage of her in a scandalous way. We will never forget her....
Thank you for your amazing work. I truly hope that people will gain a better understanding of her life and appreciate her final years more. The way she was able to come back on stage and sing after all she had been through is truly remarkable. She will always be loved.
