  • Darko Milicic is well known for being the 2nd overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft...and one of the biggest busts ever. Did he really deserve to get drafted that high to begin with though? In this video, I talk about the truth behind his draft position.
    I make all kinds of NBA videos which include trivia, analysis, player stories, countdowns, conspiracies, and mysteries. Make sure to leave a like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

      They didn't have Rasheed earlier in his rookie season and still wasn't able to make it to rotations. Even during the preseason games, he looked like he didn't belong in the league and showed no potential. Stop acting like he's a huge what-if if he went to other team, he's not. Joe Dumars got it wrong with this pick but all is forgiven since they won a championship.

      Facts, that's exactly what it was, I'm from Detroit and I remember this vividly. We was championship bound that year he couldn't get any minutes. Which I think definitely hurt his development for sure. We just had too many bigs like Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Mehmet Okur & Elden Cambell. Darko still had a decent career though.

His problems - hot head, being immature, dedication and work ethic, being drafted into championship team and Larry Brown who didn't have time for him. He was way too young to be there, he was well known in Serbia as a talent, but needed a year or two more in Europe.

  • @nathanlawson313
    @nathanlawson313 Před 3 lety +33

    The hype was real! I saw Darko up close and it's true he did have ridiculous "talent". Pistons had an open practice at Callahan Hall before the 03/04 championship season started. He was killing it in the scrimmage. At 7'0 he legit moved like a SG out there. Dribbling coast to coast, scoring down low -easily- with either hand, hitting 3s, blocking shots, etc. Problem was he needed at least 2 more years of good coaching. He wasn't ready. He simply didn't understand where to be on the most basic levels of the game. He always showed flashes but also usually looked totally lost out there. Coach Larry Brown made it much worse, because he notoriously hated rookies and foreigners. He sat Darko in the corner, didn't teach him squat, and never played him even in practices, let alone the language barrier. He didn't know a single word of English when he came here. He could've been much better if he had gotten more help early on.

    Darko also couldn't adapt to the way of life and relationships when it comes to nba (or perhaps even US in general). According to him and people that know him (which are easy to find, this is a very small country, basically every info is firsthand:) ), it was one of the major factors and it might brought him to nervous breakdown. Situations like, he's sitting with his teammates in a club or something and they want to leave and everyone starts counting what is their part in the check, which would be inconceivable here, especially with the added notion that all of them are millionaires, so he was like "ffs I'll pay for everything even though my salary is the lowest, what the fuck is wrong with you" and such. I remember this type of societal norm sets was extremely bad for his mental health. He felt like he couldn't talk to anyone or just have some kind of human contact in the honest sense of the world. Good thing he didn't go to Japan, I guess:)
    Also, coldness is one of the factors I've seen a lot of people from these parts mention as something they couldn't cope with. I personally know a guy who went to college in the US as a basketball prospect and he came back after like one year. He mentioned things like calling someone over to have a coffee and chat or whatever and that it always was awkward, like it's some strange thing to do, people wouldn't "hang out" in some basic sort of way, like drinking coke outside or just watching tv or something. Interesting thing with this guy was that he, after some time, only mingled with black people. Which probably depends on where in the US you happen to end up. But, basically, he said soft segregation was insane (for someone from here, that's also weird by default, race-based stuff in general), but blacks seemed to be the ones who fit his mentality more. And when he finally gave up and was about to go home, they actually made him a barbecue and music and all that jazz, with tables and everything, on a basketball court, which was pretty nice.
    But, in general, this type of thing is one of the major issues for people from here when it comes to US. Some thrive in that kind of environment, but most don't, it's a lot different.

He had impression that everyone is against him. If he stayed n Serbia few more years and then maybe one or two in big European clubs and after that came in NBA with 21 or 22 years he would be very good player. Probably scoring between 15 and 20 points per game. He was kid , he changed country, family was far from him so he was just lost in USA. BTW he now very successful businessman in Serbia.

    Something to note as well.
    Darko is from Serbia (former Yugoslavia), who won the 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis.
    That World Cup was marked by outstanding performance by international teams. Yugoslavia (with Peja Stojakovic and Vlade Divac) managed to beat Argentina (with Manu Ginobili and Luis Scola) in the final game. Also, Dirk Nowitzki was the MVP of that tournament.
    So yeah, while the hype was great for international players, perhaps people especially looked for prospects from the World Cup champions, Yugoslavia?
    By the way, Darko was not in the 2002 Yugoslavia roster.

Here in Serbia we are really close to our family and that was a problem for Darko also. Today he is a happy man, he has earned a lot of money in NBA, which provided him opportunity to buy land here in Serbia, have his own farm and successfull bussiness and he is winning in that field. Most important thing - he is a happy man and he is in peace with his basketball achievements. But anyway, it was sad that Drako was a bust after he'd picked by the Pistons after LeBron but nevertheless he's the 1st 2003 Draft class to get a ring & also became the youngest NBA player to get a ring by the age of 18 & that would never be broken in the history of that league. With the benefit of hindsight, it is of course understandable that people are bewildered that Milicic was the no. 2 pick in this draft class, and was taken ahead of some undauntedly great players. However, as someone who saw him play in the Yugoslav league, I truly believed that he had great potential and was an exceptional talent. I dont agree that ''was unknown'' or ''inexperienced'', because he had played in the very solid Yugoslav league against professional basketball players, and also in the European FIBA cup.
    In this period, Yugoslav league produced a number of NBA players and innumerable players who went on to play in the best European squads, and Darko was the youngest player in the league at the time.
    Naturally, he was less known to the fans, scouts and managers in the US, but objectively speaking he had more serious credentials then LBJ (in terms of prior experience and level of basketball that he'd played), who had only played high-school basketball. Why Darko failed to live up to his potential, now that's a totally different story
