Iverson’s downfall was his own fault.
Plenty of accomplished players accepted lessened roles on the team post career prime. Vince Carter is a shining example of someone who’s shown that he is above his ego which is why he’s still around. Philadelphia gave Allen a pity contract his final year in the NBA because they saw the writing on the wall for Iverson’s career.
A.I.’s pride & ego ended his NBA career.
That’s what hubris & a big ego will do...I guess he never heard of that former Rookie Of The Year/3X scoring champ/MVP/All Star/All NBA 1st & 2nd Teamer-turned-6th man off the bench named Bob McAdoo...he may not have won NBA World Titles if he told the Lakers that he wasn’t willing to come off the bench

Agreed... another AI is a shining example of what putting your ego aside can do for you. Andre Iguodala ended up with 3 rings and 1 Finals MVP for willing to come off the bench... even tho he was a starter for his entire time in Philadelphia and his season in Denver.
He should have used David Robinson for an excellent example. The former league MVP accepted coming off the bench later in his career. Tim Duncan became the focal point of their offense in 1998. The Spurs wouldn't have won championships in 1999 and 2003 without "The Admiral" making that sacrifice.
Umm no the Whole NBA was against Iverson there even a documentary about how all the reds would frame him and not call obvious fouls

The only reason it could be considered sad for Shaq towards the end is because he was desperate to have the same amount of rings from kobe if not one more. Guy had an amazing career otherwise .
What about Chris Bosh? I think his contract is up already by now, so he is officially retired...and it ended with injuries/health issues.

Chris Bosh averaged 19 and 7 his last season and had a great 14 years and only had to stop because of his blood clots. Doesn't really fit the rest of this list

Iverson stayed in the space that Melo grew out of. Melo refused the bench as well, but he wised up and showed maturity. Iverson said screw that.

Grant Hill was my favorite player to watch in the 90s. He was a beast when healthy.
People saying Iverson's ego, some say the NBA didn't want Allen's "image" to tarnish the league. It was both if you asked me. Pro sports leagues and exec's. can hype who they want, and stigmatize the image of certain players whenever they want. On the flip side, Iverson was overly emotional at times when he didn't necessarily need to be.
All those accolades Iverson listed, Jordan had, plus more and he came off the bench eventually. One of the biggest egos ever in sports.

From what I knew years back, the reason Magic Johnson finally retired was because opposing players complained that they could not guard him effectively due to his health condition, they're even afraid to touch him. Magic gave in to this pressure.

Players didn't make big money in the Cousy era. A lot of them had off season jobs. Selling insurance and cars in the off season was common.
Only reason he did that, was to raise ticket sales, the Royals were like losing money at that time, so Cousy played just for the sake of getting the moolah.

Classic kobe, I teared up for a moment just appreciating his career and everything he did for the league. For example the Demarcus Cousins to Pelicans trade. At first we thought it was a great trade for the Pelicans but it ended up being a great trade for the Kings.

Both had pretty normal decline in numbers as they aged. I think they had a pretty normal/long career, it's not like the guys above that had their careers end prematurely due to injuries or drugs.

Allen Iverson was my favourite player. I loved to watch him play. I learned to crossover just like him. I developed and improve my skills a lot just by trying out his moves. as a hardcore T-Mac fan, this really hurts. the first ever basketball shoes I bought was the T-Mac 6, I got his Jerseys from both orlando and Houston, I cheered so hard when he scored 13 pts in 33seconds, he was the reason I played basketball even if I had bad knees(last time i played was in high school). it's still sad to hear how his career ended

I immediately thought of Bob McAdoo as well. Bill Walton too. Olajuwan, Barkley, Moses Malone, and Dirk Nowitzki all came off the bench late in their careers. AI is one of my all time favorite players, but yeah, he could be very immature.
He was my favorite player when he went to Georgetown and up until he went to the finals in 2001 but he was so selfish couldn't co exist with any other top player that the sixers had ie stackhouse who got drafted their the year before in 1995 a still productive Derrick Coleman Larry Hughes and even Chris Webber in an interview said it was hard playing with Iverson when he went to the sixers cause AI had to hog the ball and take all the shots

He was a 2 time big east player of the year at Georgetown and to think when he got to the NBA all he focused on is scoring and on 2nd thought steve Nash was in that 1996 draft as well so in a redraft I would take kobe Ray Allen and Nash over iverson they all had way better careers then him

Although he ended (just 31 years old) his carrer as a champion it was really sad to see Chris Bosh wanting to play and not being able to because of health issues.
I remember T-Mac with the Spurs. He's the butt of the joke between me and my friend as the one drinking all the gatorades for the team. But he's really something on the Rockets...
you forgot elton brand amare stoudemire and jermaine oneal. all of them were great players before blowing out their knees and bounced around the league at the end of their careers. other guys who were perennial all stars but became role players after a bad injury or illness include antonio mcdyess larry johnson alonzo mourning
The only why these players career ended so bad cause they are old or had a lot of Injuries.
Steve Francis is arguably the main reason why the Grizzlies moved out of Vancouver. He refused to play for them. I never felt bad for his downfall because his ego was always big as hell.

I was crushed when I heard he died in a car crash after the 1993 playoffs. He opened the door for European born players to enter the NBA. Sadly, we'll never know the heights his career would have reached.

Shaq should have been on this list. He went from being the most dominant player in the league and winning 4 NBA Finals, to playing for multiple teams at the end of his career averaging very little points and playing time towards the end.

I know this video only applies to stars but if any solid player that saw their careers end terribly, Lamar Odom certainly fits the criteria.
Yao and Tmac's downfall is the one that hurts me the most out of this list. Like man, I grew watching these two all the time. I remember Yao's journey from CBA to NBA in early 00's. And how I always get excited seeing Tmac in Orlando.

@Markel Scott Ralph Sampson was garbage for the majority of his career and all his success in the NBA he owes to Olajuwon! Mcgrady is one of the most overrated players to ever live, choked in the playoffs constantly and never made it out the first round! Both of those players just cheapened the basketball hall of fame!
@Markel Scott so one time, Mcgrady had a freak occurrence where he hit a few 3's to win a game in the final minute of the game, so now he's a hall of famer?! That's the one argument people have when they try to justify Mcgrady being in the hall of fame
@Markel Scott yeah he led the league in scoring with 28p a game but only won 21 games! I've been watching tmac since he was drafted, he sucked on the raptors, he came into his own scoring the ball in Orlando, came to my rockets, let us down in the playoffs over and over again just like he did in Orlando! So I know first hand how overrated he is, you shoulder look it up... There's a 30 min video on CZcams about it
I never got to see Andrew Toney play, but he definitely belongs on a list like this. He was a star player and even Larry Bird described him as the best player he had ever seen in crucial times of a game. His career was sadly ended by stress fractures in bones in his feet.

Charles 'Sir Charles" Barkley, had a bad ending to his career as well, he tore his quad while playing with the Rockets, and got lifted of the court by his teammates, only to comeback for one last game to score two points later in the season. The was all for one of the greatest NBA players of all time!
