Durston X-mid 1p vs Outdoor Vitals Fortius 1p tent! Which is the best option?

  • I wanted to do this video to compare two great budget, ultra light backpacking tent options. Both of these tents are under $300, both weigh under 2lbs, both set up with trekking poles, and both are made by companies who really get out and test their gear. This video will go over my first impressions of both, what I see as the positives and negatives of both, and then show myself at 6’2” on how I fit in them with a sleeping pad. I’ll link the manufacturer’s sites below if you want to check them out!

    Hey, thanks for the review! I thought you did a good solid job of comparing the two.

      Hey thanks! It was sad shipping it back to its owner 😂. You guys really built a solid tent with that one!

    The Fortius reminds me a lot of the Six Moon Designs Trekker, but single wall.

    This is the video I've been waiting for! Although hard to compare a single wall to a double walled tent is tough. You did a great job! This answered any questions I had left! I know my xmid is awesome and I love OV gear! I knew the fortius would be a great tent also. Thanks for this video!

    I’d have to give the win to the Xmid, even with the bigger footprint and smaller mesh inside. For 2 oz more you get a double walled tent with 2 doors, made of polyester and $49 cheaper. I was looking at the new REI Flash for the price and weight, but decided that the double wall and polyester material were better for me even with the extra weight. Great video and comparison!

    I hit pause just before you started. I want to say up front that I gave away my Fortius and bought a second Xmid. I’m looking forward to your opinion.

      Yes! I agree with everything you’ve said. With the larger footprint I’ve had to set up with brush in my vestibule which was kind of cool. You just make it work. I just bought the 2P which requires even more space. The 2P may be too much for ridge line camping where ground somewhat level is hard to find. Overall the best tents I’ve ever owned. Subscribed.

    I've had my Xmid 1P solid for just about a year now and I love it. I'm in the UK and I've had it out in some pretty horrendous rain and wind and it's been rock solid. I'm actually thinking of selling my Terra Nova Pioneer, which has been my winter tent as there's just no need for it. Great video.

    I just ordered the X Mid 2 - 6’4” and motorcycle camp….. their poles also break down into short segments for compact packing.

    Thanks for all the reviews and comparisons. I pulled the trigger on the X-Mid. I needed something well ventilated since I’ve decided to give summer camping another shot. Its maiden voyage is the first week of July as a shakedown for the Tecumseh Trail.

    Thanks for the excellent review! I looked up the specs and noticed that the floor area of the XMid is 20 sq. feet (90’ L x 32’ W) while the Fortius has floor area of about 17.1 sq. feet (88’ L x 28’ W). I was initially confused when you said that the XMid felt more cramped on the inside, but then I realized that was because of the bug netting. Is that because the bug netting hangs down more than the solid wall on the Fortius? Also, did you find that the higher floor area in the XMid was noticeable? Thanks again for the very helpful videos!

    Great video! Can the X-mid be separated to where you could just put the outer shell up by itself if you wanted to? If its just pouring rain, I could imagine that it would be nice to do that for lunch etc., when you don't need the whole thing up.

    Sil poly is slightly less abrasion resistent than sil nylon. But doesnt really come into play with the use case of a tent. (Not sraping it against sticks and rocks) this is also why you dont find backpacks made of sil poly.... But. Sil poly is more resistent to uv damage from the sun. Making it a solid tent fabric choice.

    • @Beardedbackpacker
      @Beardedbackpacker  Před 11 měsíci

      It really is. I’ve had zero issues with durability out of either material honestly. But I do prefer the resistance to sag of the sil poly.

      @Beardedbackpacker if you could only have 1 1 p tent under 300 what would it be?

    • @Beardedbackpacker
      @Beardedbackpacker  Před 11 měsíci

      @@ddff5242 the Durston would be the one I would choose if I could only have one. But it honestly depends on what you want a tent to do. I have separate reviews on both the Fortius tent, and the gossamer gear 1p tent as well. I talk about that in those reviews too!
