  • Today we see what is up with the cheap LR4 we just traveled 1500 miles to pick up. After that whirlwind trip are we able to get it started?
    Video on the 1500 mile trip towing an LR4 with a LR4: • Land Rover Rescue! Can...
    We also do some rearranging in the yard using that $300 amazon winch on from of the budget LR4.

    Christian and Vera at LR TIME have done several videos of body off repairs and are super helpful. I'd like to see the engine pulled and the timing chain replacement/engine refub done. Then put back. Go through every issue and get it to 100%(ish). This is the next "Disco 2" in the Land Rover line-up. Those videos would help a lot of people get their LR4 in the best operating condition.

    All the options are great here Joe. If you are looking at charities, since we work with salvaged wood in our wood business, any tree planting or conservation efforts would be cool. Your choice though.

    Amazing work getting the old boy back up and running and driving under her own power, even if he’s currently down on power. Merlin looks just too good to break for parts, surely he’s worth replacing the knocked timing chains in order to give him a second chance? Once sorted then look to find him another owner so he can live another day. Great job as always. 👍😎

    • @nihallee
      @nihallee Před rokem +1

      Something else that would be super nice is to do mods that make the LR4 more reliable in a long trip. Things like being able to bypass the air suspension module if it breaks; Being able to turn the infotainment system off when camping so it doesn't drain the battery for 5 mins every time you open a door; being able to reprogram the Engine ECU to use lower octane fuel when premium is not available. I think there needs to be more redundancy with manual workaround to avoid being stranded somewhere... I have a ton of ideas because I would like to drive an LR4 from Canada to Argentina and the way it is now will not work really good. However, all those mods could be done on the silver budget LR4. Cheers!

      I bought my 2010 land rover hse with 109,000 miles on it 4 yrs ago and I've had very little issue with it and I love it .There fun to drive and so comfortable but it's just been my daily driver no off roading and before me it was garage kept and was in excellent shape for a 9 yr old land rover inside and out.
      Did have to have the upper A arms replaced when I got it. It had little jitter in the front end and that's what it was.
      Has 130,000 on it now and the engine is still very strong transmission is as smooth as new.
      I paid $15,900 for it so there not expensive if you are lucky to find one in as good a shape as I did and you don't mind the higher mileage.
      I cant see me selling it for along time I really enjoy it and if you find one I know you will enjoy yours to for whatever reason you get it.

    • @KhanTigre
      @KhanTigre Před rokem +2

      get a 2010 2.7 or a 2011 3.0 biturbo. Cranks on those were better quality and the 2.7 is simpler to work on and maintain albeit a bit low on horsepower. The biturbo has ALL the grunt (really, that thing PULLS). Get the HSE with the secondary aircon unit because depending on the heat (like if you live in Phoenix or something), the aircon will work overtime to keep a cabin that big cool.
      If you go for one with air suspension, check the compressor drying filter lid for cracks, they tend to crack there, easy repair, most people just apply JBWeld to it, but it's a cheap fix.
      ALWAYS check the suspension airbags for leaks, no need to replace the entire strut since the shocks on those last FOREVER, so just replace the rubber bags for new ones.
      I own one in Brazil, with horrible roads and fuel quality, it just tipped over 140 thousand miles and it's a BEAST. I can't find ANYTHING with that level of ride comfort and offroad capability. And I am genuinely surprised with how reliable it has been.

    I'd look for a LOCAL charity organization or wildlife-oriented group that could use a big beast like that and donate it and maybe let them know that if something happens, you'd fix it no problem.
    Giving it away to a family in need might be a problem because it's a potential maintenance burden as you said.
    One thing I never seen any youtube channel do is use one of these as a modification platform (suspension lift or mods, locker diffs and whatnot) to make it even better at offroading even if you sacrifice some on-road driveability. I don't see people showing how to build a steel bumper or rear tire carrier for those and I would LOVE to see some LR4 modification content.

    Oh yes you should always take in more land rovers or range rovers.Even if there not drivable they make the nicest colorful yard art for all the local birds to rest and poop all over and great cover for any ground critters looking to find a dry place to raise a family 😅😂.
    And yes you bought a real winner in that Amazon winch. Seems it can get you out of some pretty tricky situations with some clever tree rigging.
    Nice work
    And you got it running wow your a genius.😊
    What to do with Merlan huh.
    That's a toughy because your right about giving it to a family in need.With 183,000 miles we land rover owners all know things are going to happen and it's not cheap to fix so not the way to go if it was my decision. Other than someone using it for a grocery getter that has the means or the ability like you to do all repairs and maintenance I guess the only other thing is what you said giving it or selling it to an offroad adventure place but the timing chains would need to be replaced before it would last very long doing that with it.
    I just think it's still to nice to strip it down and piece it out but it would make for a cool bunch of videos of you doing that.
    Or you could start a weekend RENT A ROVER for an off roading weekend and make some money to put towards rebuilding the other rovers you have in the shop.
    But I ha e no idea how that would work with insurance .I guess you would have to carry liability on whoever rents it for a weekend and all that but it may never make it back from the weekend because it's at the bottom of rocky hill it slid off and tumbled for days 😅😂.

    I don’t think giving it to a person/family in need is a good idea. Too many jiggly bits to break, and none are generally cheap to repair or easy to trace. We are not talking about an easy American domestic vehicle or a reliable Japanese vehicle.
    I bought my LR3 knowing there can be expensive issues, and I have had three expensive issues so far, and I am mechanically, electrically, electronically & diagnostically knowledgeable. I ended up paying someone because I can. My son who is half way through his mechanics apprenticeship does the repairs now. Fortunately he has access to his boss’s full workshop after hours/weekends. He does work on it now - he does not like working on it, but hey; I am his Dad lol. Plus for the last two years it has been trouble free with only servicing, brake rotors/pads and one CV boot.
    I reckon you should repair it, sell it and divide any proceeds as you described. Money might be a better option for an organisation or a genuine person in need (not someone who will waste it in booze, cigarettes & drugs).

    Maybe build an LR4 / Disco 4 that makes the New Defender look overpriced and silly? 😉

      Not a terrible idea (though I do want a new Defender too haha).

    I'm sure some charity would appreciate it in your area , even if it was to sell for money .

      Appreciate the input. I think we may try to get it in nice order and try to maximize the money out of it for some good.

    See if you have any veteran non profits in your area and reach out to them?

      There is one that some of the local Jeep guys work with. That’s not a terrible idea to see.

      @@LostCauseRanch , that would be great if it worked out. I’m used to work with a veteran non profit here in the northeast. A lot of them are into outdoor therapy and overlanding. 🇺🇸

    Is it feasible to do a LS swap on one of these LR4

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před rokem

      I think there is a possibility on it. The interface with all the terrain modes is what I’m curious on. I’d like to figure that out some day.

      Ok thank you for the response. I would like to build something like that with my brother. It’s the only 7 seater off-roading vehicle I like but I always read things about the motor and it so issues. Plus my brother keeps on saying that we need to do a LS swap :D.

    Detailed engine swap for something more reliable. There are videos from russia where these have Toyota/lexus engines in it. World needs the howto for swapping these engines. Discos are fantastic cars but those engines are bit scary.

      Once the timing chain situation is sorted I don’t mind the 5.0.
      But it would be neat to put something else in there for fun too.
