- The ДП-5А Russian Geiger counter is both a handy device and nice collectors piece.
I explain how to power the odd sized battery bay, and provide instructions on using geiger counter dosimeters in general.
Привет от такого же поклонника советских дозиметра и обладателя дп-5а из России
Dp-5As are really hard to find and really sensitive. The common version is the Dp-5v which is much more robust and normally is sold in it's own case. Dp-5Bs are also scattered about. I own all three. Aside from the components inside they're all mostly the same just that the 5V is much sturdier. Definitely pick one up with the crate and accessories (normally an extension handle, screwdriver, a few replacement light bulbs and gaskets, a pack of plastic bags to cover the probe, if you're real lucky a manual and even a maintenance log, and of course the adapter for running off a car battery), you can even find "new" manufacture that were stored away in the original cardboard wrapping.
Battery sleeves are easy enough to make. Some small PVC pipe (the 1 inch stiff) and just wad up some tin foil for one end so you don't have to bend anything. Get some rechargeable batteries and you're good to go. Try to stick to AAs though. Older batteries had less voltage than modern so if you use too big a battery you'll fry the electronics, and good luck finding a repair man.
The biggest difference between the 5A and 5B aside from wiring is the 5A has a small handle permanently fixed to the probe wire. It can be inserted in the probe to use as a handle or left unattached if the probe would have to reach small confines. the 5B and 5V have a long handle that is carried separate and can be attached in the same slot.
Also Sieverts are the international standard in modern time because they are more accurate and easier to convert. Rontgens are obsolete
Can I have the Geiger counter?
@Rishabh Gangadeen seriously.
Roentgens > sieverts
I'm thinking about getting an A or a B, which one is better?
@@kuracao484 If it's your first one, definitely B, 5V are really common though and the easiest to maintain. They're the more modern green plastic ones
Nice demonstration. I like the design of these old Soviet units.
Fantastic video, especially for the battery solutions presented. Super neat that it comes with a radiation source! I've got a 5b in the mail right now and learning what I can before it shows up.
Cool! When it was new (Sr90) its shows 20mRh value. (Aprox).
Perfect! Excellent video, learned a lot from you just now. Thanks!
Very good presentation. I have a slightly different version (DP-5B) :)
Has your dp-5b got different knobs?
fantastic mate, just what I've been ;looking for.Hope to pick up a later model soon!
wow.. Geiger counter from Chernobyl 1986!!
Mask Trooper it’s not from Chernobyl. It’s just Soviet.
The liquidators in Chernobyl used the DP-5V, a later variant, not the DP-5A or DP-5B, although confusingly, in russian, DP-5V is ДП-5В.
@@junglejim9551 oh i see.. thanks for the info buddy 😊
They did use the dp-5s for detecting the ground levels of radiation
@@junglejim9551I'm pretty sure they used the DP-5B too
Amazon currently selling LR12 packs for £1.99 in the UK. I bought a few sets to use in my DP5V.
Battery wise I use 1 inch PVC sanded flat on two sides so they can all fit in. Then packed some tin foil in and packed it solid to make a conductive spacer for the negative side of the battery
What batteries are you using with your 1 inch PVC spacers?
@@alexandercrisp9682 AA They work great
Thanks!
@@alexandercrisp9682 No prob
the reset scale, a function ive only seen on ludlum geiger counters
You could hear the counter clicking! Have you found anywhere that has unusually high levels of radiation?
Some time in the next few week I plan to visit old SA nuclear testing sites. Will definitely show results!
I took a comparable model to Chernobyl on Holiday. In the hospital, there was an article of clothing worn by the firefighters during the initial disaster. On all but the higher settings, it was making white noise.
Hi Sir... may I know, how dangerous is the Strontium 90?
Or is it non lethal if let expose to us daily?
Strontium 90 emits beta radiation which is easily blocked by the metal cover slip it has over it. Unless you do something real silly like eat it or carry it in your pocket every day it is of not much danger to you.
@@makestuffnow Thanks... that makes more sense
I plan to buy one, but kinda 50-50
@@makestuffnow Is there anything that I need to know if buying one?
There is a seller I found. They say still new not used... no box or battery cover...
For. me, I worry it does not work despite the seller claim as new not used
The price is fairly cheap I must say
@@makestuffnow It’s decay product yttrium 90 emits a little gamma though.
Hello! I have just acquired one of these, and while the backlight works, it fails to detect any radiation. Any idea how to fix this?
My guiger counter the needle rises on every setting whats happening
Odd query but what contacts are needed for the headset/a microphone?
sorry what is the exact name of the batteries you put in the meter? Thanks
The seller has to remove the testing sorce if they want to ship it to the US.
are the dials painted with radium?
What did you use mate for the AA battery ?? Thanks mate
Would you have a source for the battery adaptor sleeves?
What type of batteries they are? i dont find them
what kind of external speaker did you use in this video? I have a DP-5A myself and find the headset frustrating at times
It was just an ordinary 5-12V piezo buzzer you will find in any electronic store. I cant remember the exact type. I just connected the wires straight to the earpiece outputs and it worked well enough.
Thank you very much
Is the counter safe to handle if the check source has been removed and dose to source contaminate the counter
I've never found any of the old Warsaw PACT counters with the Strontium removed to ever be radioactive, Strontium 90 only emits Beta so it never seems to contaminate anything unless it falls apart, the Soviet and Polish Geiger have the Strontium on a metal plate so that's all good.
Can I just use the LR-12 battery? Or do I need to cut it open like you did in the video.
You will definitely need to cut it open as the batteries are not evenly spaced and also the polarity is different. Its not a hard to crack open the pack.
Do they all come with the 2 geiger tubes?
all. Its need to measure 200r/h
Why do you need tape or sleeves around the battery
The battery compartment is made for obsolete batteries you likely wont ever find. AA batteries work but they are physically smaller than the intended ones, so you need to pack them in with something so they don't fall out.
@@makestuffnow Thanks
Does the screen have radium?
It does have a feint green glow in the dark so it does look like it has a radioluminescent paint on it. I don't know what kind but radium would be the best guess for the age of it.
Now you said you could run the counter off of a car battary, can it be just any car battary or do you have to use a Soviet era battary?
I can't read the manual exactly, but from what I can understand you can connect the adaptor to any 3, 6 or 12 volt battery. You connect a jumper wire on the adaptor to select whatever voltage you are using. So any normal 12V car battery will work.
@@makestuffnow awesome! thanks my friend.
