Amar'e Stoudemire Joins Q & D | Knuckleheads S2: E8 | The Players' Tribune

- STAT, aka Amar'e Stoudemire, joins the show for another entertaining episode of Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles. The Suns’ legend reminisces about learning the game despite the fact that he didn’t start playing organized basketball until he was 14 - and why making the NBA five years later didn’t seem that hard. Amar'e then recounts his draft tale, and explains why he thought the Suns might take him. He then discusses his chemistry with Phoenix point guard Stephon Marbury. After that, Amar'e and Q talk about teaming up with Steve Nash, and about how much fun they had playing together, and about their conviction that the Suns could’ve won a championship. They also open up about how confused they were when the team was dismantled soon after. Amar'e then opens up about free agency, revealing that he wanted to stay in Phoenix, but that he and and the team weren’t on the same page. That lead him to New York, where he had spent time as a kid. He says that he wanted to be the guy to recruit other players to the big city. Q presses Amar'e for an explanation of his “wine bath” phase, and Amar'e details the health benefits of wine baths. The three then talk about what it was like to play with Carmelo Anthony, before moving on to Amare’s time playing in Israel. He then tells his best Steve Nash story and gives his opinion on the best coach he ever had. The Suns’ teams led by Q and Amar'e were some of the most exciting in NBA history, and this can’t-miss episode gets into all of the behind-the-scenes drama in the desert.

Amar’e used to go toe to toe vs Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett and give them plenty of problems, and when he came to NY he avg 25 a game but Injuries caught up with him. Big time Respect to STAT!
He still had game when the Miami Heat picked him up. Tbh I was hoping the Rockets would have signed him when he tried to come back to the NBA a couple of years ago, so he could play under D'Antoni again as another veteran backup with Nene.
Self Respect one of my all time favorite players and I have a uncle who looked exactly like him lol
He gave Timmy the business! All the time! Blocks and dunks on him!
HitEmUp Keem When he was in NY I thought that him and Iman Shumpert looked alike before the Amar’e got locks in his hair.Him and Ray Felton was rolling in NY.When I jump that high ur knees take a toll.Thats why Im looking at Zion like he better expand his game.
Self Respect I hear that but why hold on to the rim to come down soft
I love D. Miles’s preparation for every interview. He takes this podcast very serious. Much respect
Love ❤️ him and Q 💯
This is so very true. I was watching an episode the other day (believe it was the Zeke interview) and I was really surprised by how deep Q thought and how serious he takes this. If they upped their production value a bit this would be perfect.
D miles put Q back in line when he goes off track

That’s why you never listen to the media, popular views, people on social, youtube commentators. Knowledge is power :)
Man I'm hype as hell listening to Q talk about him. I LOVED that phoenix team. Steve Nash wuz the mtf MAN. Funnest most skilled team i ever watched from top to bottom. Shaq pisses me off wen he talks about Nash not deserving those MVP's. He BALLED that whole era.

You're right Monsieur.... I forgot about that nevertheless he's a stand-up guy
I love the energy, excitement, and nostalgia that Quentin has about the league. It's contagious.
As a life long Knick fan he will always have the respect and love of New Yorkers. That first season STAT had the city on 🔥🔥🔥. You felt the energy
They should've built that Knicks squad around Amare 😤 They were awesome when he was the "Go-to " guy
@@horacelilbigbrother9215 I wish the big 3 for the knicks in 2010 would've been Lebron, A'mare, & Joe Johnson with a good surrounding cast of shooters
Mad love for Mr. Amare
Stoudemire was so dope before those dang knee surgeries.
Amare was still on the climb and was getting to where no one could stop him.
He could jump over anybody plus had skill too, that was only getting better.
Amare was mad dope with The Suns, then with The Knicks he did super impressive ish as well, even after not being what he once was he still did more with those injuries than most people.
He was still a very good baller but he just wasn’t close to that Great status he was prior to the knees, nowhere close to what he could have been and that was with him still being in the top 1/3 of the league when he played with those injuries.
I have even more respect for Mr. Amare after hearing this & learning the decisions he was wise enough to make as a teenager that made sure he took advantage of the gifts he was blessed with, then doing what it took to get better in every way.
Respect Due Sir 🙏
04-05 Phoenix suns was one of all time greatest offenses of all time. They began the small ball
If they get Monta Ellis on here 🙌🏾💯🔥
only old school Warriors fans want Ellis on a podcast =P

CAUTION: For any Phoenix Suns fan, or Steve Nash fan, this episode is so hard to get through without wanting to punch a hole through a wall (or a fire extinguisher).
ThatCoCoa The Casey Jacobson reference hit me in the feels, lol
Not a suns fan but i remember those teams back then. They were Golden state and the Rockets before Golden State and the rockets were....themselves now. The suns were analytics before it was heavily used in the NBA. They were literally a video game. They didint defend as well as a team like the warriors did recently (not at the moment though) but with the pace they played at, they way their offence could score from anywhere in any type of way, the flashy, swaggy moves they made, they didnt really need a great defence. just keep your man in front of you.
simeon hector Exactly! I don’t think enough credit is given to Don Nelson and Nash with their run in Dallas. Don Nelson pioneered that style of offense and Nash orchestrated it beautifully. D’Antoni, who favored this style, further improved it by running it at a faster pace knowing it wouldn’t be much of a transition for Nash. Don Nelson then brought it to Golden State after leaving Dallas, and, while as a GM for Phoenix, Steve Kerr got to study it closely. Then Kerr became head coach of Golden State and the rest is history. I think Curry was the one who benefited from it the most. Kerr, as coach, took the strengths of Nelson and D’Antoni’s offense and the strengths of Phil Jackson and Popovich’s defense. Then Nash joined Golden State’s coaching staff as an advisor. Basically, the DNA of how the game is played is in those guys. Even big’s becoming shooters and handlers, that was Don Nelson shaping Dirk. Nelson was the first to introduce “point forward”.
@@ThatCoCoa point forward....Paul Pressey, Milwaukee Bucks
Bryan Everett That’s correct! And Nelson was Pressey’s coach
The 05’ Nash/Amare PHX was the first team I ever fell in love with. Amare was the truth! Will never forget that horry foul on Nash to get Diaw/Amare suspended in the playoffs. Lol

The best part of this podcast is the respect all of these guys have for one another. Mentioning someone like AK47 is huge because it shows they have love and appreciation for ANYONE they went up against. No diss to AK47 but he’s been out of the league for less than a decade and plenty of people heading into 2020 already forgot about him. This podcast is the truth.
That dantoni O.. imagine that young amare in Houston's Clint Capela Role 😬
Htx should have kept Harrell. Reminds me of Stat with his aggressiveness
Hell On Wheels!!!
Shit wouldn’t work harden not unselfish like Nash
@@shadowson2211 Should have kept Ariza too
It depends on the guard. Harden shoots more than Nash and it’s not up tempo like Nash ran it. Honestly, D Antoni offense hasn’t been as crisp since the Phoenix days. He had a couple good years when Chris Paul was there and that was good
Y’all the GOAT for this, Amare my favorite player ever

As a white dude, it is really cool to hear Q talk about how much he liked Nash because he embraced everyone and wanted to hang out all the time. Miles is on top of directed this show. Great stuff.

The Nash Amare pick and roll was perhaps the best executed 2 man game from one of the oldest set plays in basketball history. It was just so filthy and whether the defender covered or went under the screen, they got punished EVERY SINGLE TIME.
