HPM-100s have a large following in the enthusiast community, and continue to be popular almost 50 years (!) after their introduction. Over the years, I`ve owned quite a few speakers, my current favorites being 2 pairs of HPM-100s, stacked & wired in parallel, powered by a Carver M-500t amp (250 wpc). Soundstage is HUGE, can be played at almost concert levels without distortion. Great Rock `n Roll speakers.
@@banjammy4116 Good ! If you like them, hold onto them, they will last a long time if taken care of. I have been fooling around with audio equipment for a LONG time, and have found that there are two speakers which tend to polarize any conversation among "audiophiles" (or people who THINK that they`re audiophiles 😎) Typically, those two are HPM-100s, and anything by BOSE.... if someone is not satisfied (or happy) with their current speakers, I suggest that they add an equalizer, and try a few different adjustments with that in place. That can often make that critical difference in a speaker`s sound. Enjoy the music !
I bought a pair of these for $40. Mids were blown and wood was pretty scuffed up. Found some mids and now they sound fantastic. My wife commented favorably on the sound. That is the acid test.
Had these years ago paired with my Sansui 9090DB which I still have. Traded the HPM's to my buddy for his Pioneer SX-1980. They never sounded "full" enough for me. Shallow and somewhat small sounding, I thought. Fantastic build on 'em though!
Japanese speakers never did sell that well in the USA -Maybe it was logistics and or maybe it was because many were not found of their sound -I’m guessing the Ex JBL staff did help give this speaker more acceptability to the US crowd and I’m sure that helped out sales but much like their electronics back in this day they had the “bright sounding “ stigma to them -They are very well constructed and beautiful to behold that’s for sure !
Had a pair, repaired and restored cabs and sold em for way less than I should have lol.. they blew my dads hpm60 away but still weren’t “all that” to me honestly. And yes, all the speakers were in very good original condition, surrounds slightly gummy but fully intact. One of the best looking speakers with its grill off that’s for sure though . 🥵
My most favorite of the pioneer HPM series The HPM forties bookshelves man those things were beautiful I had six of them way back in the late 70s early 80s.. and then they produce monsters the HPM 900 those were gorgeous I had three pair of those as well way back in the day way back in the day. The problem that I had with the hpm-100 is that they were just kind of tinny sounding. As I own them for about two weeks before I traded him back for the HPM 900..😊 I drove all of these with the Carver m500t magnetic field amplifiers I had bought several of the in 500ts because of the fact that they were rated at 252 channel at 8 ohm.. and then I finally traded off then 500ts dusted them off box them up and I still have them stashed away for a rainy..
I had a pair , I lost them when I went to serve my country x thanks lot family. But I have four, count them four Pioneer CS 99A running thru Marantz 4400 which I spent more refurbishing it than it cost new but it still has what the new kids wish they had. That's all piece out people.
I own them and love them. My dad worked for a logistics company that used to work for the us army in Germany he bought them off of a soldier who got them new and only had them for a couple of months when he had to go back to the us my dad bought them of for cheap and gave them to me. They’re perfect in my studio
I like this video how the speakers are original a lot of people just throw away the speaker when there's when the rubber cracks instead of actually getting the rubber on the side of the speaker fixed blows my mind then they put a similar speaker in there and it might be very similar that you don't hear the difference or it might have different characteristics it's just it's mind-blowing to me
HPM's are pretty decent, and were great for the time they lived in but best EVER??? That's throwing a ton of shade on a whooooooole lot of good speakers out today!
I've had at least 400 pairs of speakers, like a crackhead looking fir the next hit, finally got a set of hpm 100, hands down, no doubt, best speaker I've ever heard, period, talk about clarity, about depth, about, imaging, yes yes yes they do all that without breaking a sweat, but the magic if all those drivers coming together to make just a beautiful sound is just incredible, I don't have to search for a specific song that sounds amazing with the speakers iam using, pick anything, any song, and they just make you say wow,
Awesome! Your helping me out in a big way. I suffer from the what ifs. I have these speakers along with an sx5580. Both are pristine. It's all I've ever heard since I was a kid in 76. I am always hearing about the klipsch's and the klh's and jbl's and wonder if my speakers stack up!! They still sound incredible to me but maybe some guys that know something about speakers can shed light! Thanks
I currently have a pair of Pioneer DSS-7s as my main speakers that I purchased in the 80’s that sound great to this day! How much are the HPM-100s going for?
Just not true, not even close. There is a following amongst those that collect vintage, but it's by people who haven't a clue. If you seriously think these speakers can compare to high- end speakers you need to get out more.
I have a pair of these in my basement but they need cones and I looked at the construction of them and wasn't overly impressed. I was thinking of replacing them with a high end woofer but where would I stop next would be the tweeter and I definitely would have to redesign the crossover and then before you know it I would be rebuilding the whole speaker
Very nice indeed I have had a set recently and currently have a pair of the HPM-60'S . Slightly smaller woofer and cab size still heavy but easier to place
Owner of HPM 40 an later the HPM 60 on Sony TAF 444 Mk II. Recently bought 2nd hand Pioneer SA 7500 and TX 7500 and Pioneer headphones SE 305. Due my age can't hear above 8 KHz. I'm going back to vintage audio including vinyl.
I have had my H.P.M 100 since '77 or '78 still looks great. I keep them oiled from time to time. Don't know what to do with them anymore , any suggestions?. Comments welcome.
I'd like to see some measurements on these old speakers. I doubt Pioneer was shooting from the hip with these. I'd like to see if their old methods actually manifested and gow it compares to speakers today.
I owned these in the late 70s and got rid of them quickly. Crossover frequencies are 3KHz, 4KHz and 12KHz, meaning the midrange driver covers only from 3KHz to 4Khz which makes no sense, female vocalists sound nasal and piercing. The super tweeter (12KHz and up) is just an ornament, it doesn't make a sound. Bass is very good though. Gimmicky and harsh sounding speakers, highly overrated.
I've seen measurements that i worst classify the worst I've ever seen. I can't wait to try them and review them on my channel 😁☺️ as i am super curious how that translates to ears. There is a following for a reason!

I upon seeing this video, immediately went to the J.A. site; however, the HPMs were not to be found. Are they to be listed in due course, or shown for the sake of comparison alone? I need either a set of 100s, or I would be happy with 60s.

Please make a full video on these speakers. I’d like to hear about crossover restoration, best placement, best stands, tips, etc.
We absolutely will!
Yes please make a full i vid on these awesome speakers
Yeah, I best get in on it too, so indeed, please do a video on these magnificent speakers. That happen to be my personal favorites (these & the HPM60)
@@LennyFlorentine That would be awesome, I have HPM 40s and they sound great!!!

One of my only regrets in life. Passed on a set of these in 1977 for a pair of Jensen LS 5's. Paired with a Pioneer SX650

One of the best ones ❤️
What is the song?? It's so funky and groovy
Love them - even after all these years I can not afford them.
They sound absolutely beautiful through my FongKong Karaoke Speakers. Unbelievable! 👌
Those are sick. I had those big ass Pioneers when I was kid with the 15 inch woofer in it. It still makes me laugh every time I see 6 inch drivers 😂
Best speakers I've heard were the HPM 150's when I was a teen
I've now got the JBL L100's. They are superb and I'll never part with them
Oh yeah dude! Àny speaker will have a hard road to overtake those luscious JBLs..
If you can hear the super Twitter in this legendary speaker, you have the hearing of a werewolf
But nobody can, it was a total gimmick to sell them
So true! I sold them in the late 70s and I could hear them fine. I own a pair now . . . but can't hear them anymore.
Super twitter???? You mean tweeter...
One speaker was playing louder, i investigated couse and found test tweeter whith hand covered and i was shocked it didnt worked
They great at the time. B&W 803 D3 takes it to a whole new level.
Oh-man... those must sound "boss" paired with a Sansui receiver, from what I've heard! ;)
❤❤❤ I OWN 6 OF THEM. BOUGHTY 1ST PAIR IN 1979
I have the hpm 40 pioneers. Love them.
Rogers BBC LS3/6 here, great vintage speakers

Cloth surrounds can outlast foam surrounds.
I recommend ADS L810’s
I have the hpm-60's paired with a pioneer sa-9500ii. It sounds amazing! But one day I'll get my hands on a set of 100's.
They're not amazing at all. You need to listen to more speakers if this is what you believe. Keep looking.

Nope dont change a thing, keep the 100s and don't listen to anyone otherwise trying to get you into something new under 10k. Just my advice 🤷♂️😁👍

Good luck...on the "Bargain" price on these; Those days are over. Anything decent/intact, plan for $800.00-ish on up for a pair.

Bring them in to our store and trade them in 👍
Bart Locanthi was the reason those are so good, he was VP of engineering at JBL before he went over to Pioneer, his passion was to beat the JBL L100.
