- Watch how I restore the cabinets on this pair of famous vintage Pioneer HPM-100 stereo speakers from the 1970's era. They will get a complete new cabinet makeover. That includes new walnut wood veneer with a hand rubbed effect finish, new speaker baffle paint, and new grille cloth. Woodworkers and Audiophiles alike will certainly enjoy this How-to video.

Much appreciated!
Yes Sr!
Indeed... I Concur! I Appreciate your video Tom!❤💯
One of the best, simplest, video’s I have ever watched and I do appreciate the video production’s I have ever seen,BROVO TOM
@@tomczerwinski3739 Tom in your video you mentioned you were going to refurbish the speaker grill’s and that’s what I wanted to see so would you have that ? The reason I ask is because I’m doing my jbl l100 grills right now an I would love to see how you did yours.
Dude you make all us 70's folk real proud. Craftmanship even for an rocker like you is par excelle'nt !!!
Respect you made them look better than they did when they were on sale 👍👍👍
Great job, so pleased to see a pair of old speakers been brought back to life.
This was satisfying to watch. My father left me a set of vintage Pioneer speakers from the 70’s. I have to try them out!
I made my own speakers way back in 1976. They each contain one 15 inch woofer, 2 mid-range drivers, and 4 tweeters. The foam rings of the woofers eventually had turned to dust due to age. But for a cost of only $27, I obtained new rings and rebuilt the woofers. Once done, they were as good as new.
Growing up, my one friend had a pair of these. We were always infatuated with the sound the potentiometers made when turning them. Loving the restoration, commencing with the watching.
WOW, that is one nice job! Lots of work but well worth it.
Thanks 👍
This is why, despite being a vintage speaker, it is excellently beautiful, flawless.
Just like the Blue Line gear. Timeless.
Excellent video Tom - thanks for sharing your knowledge and skillful craftsmanship !!
Thank you!!
absolutely love it,,,,,,,,,,,, great job,,,,,,,,,,,,70's stereo equipment is the best and worth saving. it breaks my heart to see you revive these speakers,,,,,,,,,,,,,, love you for it, you have done a service to mankind.....
Now THAT is a work of art that belongs in a museum!!
I remember hearing these at the store. Excellent sounding. The hpm tweeter was exceptionally clean and crisp sounding.
Man this brings back memories. These were the first set of speakers I bought myself back in the 70's along with the Technics SA-700 receiver. Thanks for sharing.
That was a certainly a nice system! Pioneer and Technics were some of the best mainstream audio gear back in the days.
A few years ago, I found a nice looking pair of these exact speakers in a neighbor's trash. I was quite surprised to find that they worked! The only thing missing was one of the cloth font covers. I sold them for what was basically a song. These here look fantastic!
This is so satisfying to watch, just amazing work by someone who takes pride in their work!!
"Thats a lot of work, but well worth it, and they will last decade's. 100% on Effort. And what better way to Enjoy, hooking then up to that Beautiful Hifi. And a Beatles LP. Very interesting Video. Cheers Grant 😊
Great craftsmanship. Well done. Enjoyed watching and learning the process, thanks
most excellent work!!!!! Wish I could have had my 4 advent loud speakers restored like that!
Job well done... they cost an arm and a leg nowadays... why ?? dunno... but you brought them to another level...
Great resto Tom. I really enjoyed how thorough and professional you approached this. Well done.
Thank you kindly! It was well worth the effort to bring these famous speakers up to date.
Gorgeous restoration !! I sold a boatload of HPM-100's back in my days at Franklin Music in Atlanta (Lenox Square). Still have my original JVC 501 receiver. You bring back very fond memories, Sir !!
Thank you Rip! I also sold quite a few of the HPM-100's when I worked in the audio industry way back in the 70's. When I found these a couple years ago on craigslist, I couldn't resist buying them and doing the restoration on these vintage Pioneer loudspeakers. But most importantly, it's the classic sound just as I had remembered.
Beautiful job with these. I love to them come back to life. My first audiophile experience came in 1977 with my college roommates JBL L-100s hooked up to a nice Marantz receiver. I've never forgotten that sound. These, I'm sure, sound quite similar.
Thank you John! I remember the JBL L-100's very well. Most likely one of the best speakers of it's time. That's all due to Bart Locanthi, VP of engineering at JBL, who designed the famous L-100's. He left JBL in the 70's and was then hired by Pioneer to develop a new speaker with his experience and expertise and to compete with the L-100's. And the rest is history...
OMG! I had that exact model back in the day! Bought them new at a now defunct stereo shop.
Wow! Brilliant job! Mad skills.
They are so beautiful!
I had a pair in 1979-1985!!! loved them!
Wow! I had HPM-40s. Great job!!!
Thank you! The Pioneer HPM40's were great sounding bookshelf speakers!
Nice work. Now I really long for a few sets of speakers I had back in the 70's and 80's.
Nice video , We all dream of redoing our speakers and this is the outcome of excellence !
Absolutely beautiful speakers and beautiful work done to them!! 👏🙌
Thank you Jose
Excellent craftsmanship
Nice work! I just restored a pair of 1981 JBL Model 96 3-ways. I didn't have to put new wood veneer on mine...just sand, light re-oil, and used Minwax paste with a buffer (several layers). They turned out very good...but, not the same quality as new veneer. They sound better than new. The tweeters are original and perfect. I found factory direct replacement (JBL) new midrange drivers (same impedance, specs). The stock white woofers were toast...found some new Eminence 10" bass guitar drivers with pure copper voice coils that are a PERFECT match. No cutting, no new holes. Also utilized the factory hardware! 40-year old speakers with new life!!!!
Thanks Chris! It sounds like your project turned out great. Another vintage pair of speakers brought back from a bygone area. Very cool!
Gorgeous work
OMG you brought back so many memories, I had a pair when I was in the Army stationed in Germany.
Funny enough, my dad bought a pair from a guy that was stationed in Germany, way back when.
They are awesome speakers great restoration of these pioneer speakers.
Amazing stuff.... master work indeed.
Amazing work! Please upload some more!
This sounds still great ❤️❤️
Had a pair back in the 70s. Loved them
They look like they came right out of the store , awesome job, thanks for showing us!!!
Turned out very Beautiful
Beautiful! These were great speakers back in the day and still surpass in quality many modern speakers of today as well. Rebuild the crossovers with better coils and replace the aging capacitors and they'll sound much better too!
Incredible job
All the work sure pays off just beautiful
very beautifully done amazing craft
your passion amazing
Inspiring me to do my Pioneer CS-B9000's!! Great work!
What an incredible amount of work. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Amazing job!
Nicely done. They turned out excellent, and all the careful prep work was worth it.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work. Makes me want to try restoring a set of speakers myself.
So good. I just came in from the cold garage sanding down a pair of Realistic Nova 10s for my daughter's first stereo in her room, xmas present🎁. I WAS really pleased with how it was coming along...
Rock on!
beautiful. thank you for sharing
I have a set that I bought in Japan in the 70's. You are definitely making me want to do the resto! I'm driving mine with a Sansui 901DB receiver (70's also) that I restored. You have done a Beautiful Job!
Thanks Roger
Great job all around!
That was an amazing transformation of taking something old and making it new again.
Thanks!
Congratulations.
They look more beautiful than new!
Thank you very much! I'm extremely pleased with the results. The new veneer and natural finish exceeded my expectations.
Absolutely awesome job.... I love the classic speakers and receivers from the 70s and early 80s. Been looking for a 70s receiver and speakers to match. There’s a couple of HPM 60s and 100s out there but they’ve all looked a little tired. Maybe I should just get a pair and get them renovated over time.... Yours are truly beautiful
Thanks Richard. It was a really enjoyable project!
Sublime work and such craftsmanship, those speakers are looking like new !
Thanks for the compliments!
Excellent work! They're look as good as new! They sound great as well! 👍🙂
Thanks Harold! They still sound as good as new!
Similar to my Pioneer CS-303 speakers from 1983 which I am still using today. I had my '82 Akai AM U01 amp in for repair (capacitators) last year, and the engineer checked over the speakers mentioning they were in very good condition. Old tech amazes me sometimes.
I bought my HPM-100 and HPM-40 along with a Pioneer SX-950 on Okinawa in 76. I was amazed at your skills Tom you made them look like I remembered them. Thank you for sharing your video with us. Ed
Nice setup. I am sure you've had many years of enjoyment listening to your Pioneer stereo gear. I thank you for the compliments on my video!
@@tomczerwinski3739 that was so meticulous in the skills. My wife wanted to downsize I don'[t any of it anymore. Yes I did have enjoyment for many years. It followed me until I retired in 93 from the USMC Those HPMs pumped out the sounds.
Absolutely Amazing Work. I had a friend that had 4 hooked up in his small living room. Audio Nirvana.
Thank you for the amazing video Tom!
Nice work!
Fantastic job! 👍👍👌
I bought my son a very nice working pair of these for $4 at a carport sale last year! You did an awesome job on these and I'm going to send this to him and see if would like to PROPERLY restore them just as you did. Looks like you have some nice equipment and a nice setup. Thanks for doing this great tutorial!
That was an incredible deal for $4 !! Glad you liked the video and hope your son enjoys restoring these great speakers as much as I did.
I had a set of these. Well worth putting the time in to restore. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like them!
Excellent pro job.! 👏👍
I only stopped on this because I thought these were the same model speakers I used to own. They were not, nor was the video what I thought it was, dealing with the cabinet rather than the electronics. Still watched the whole thing, as it was a great video, and a craftsman at work, but most of all, the voice over was awesome. Dude ought to be doing nature shows or something, like an American David Attenborough or something.
Thanks Anthony! The closest I ever got to utilizing my voice for an audience was playing DJ while running an illegal underground radio station back in the 70's...lol
Fantastic Work of Art!
Thank you very much!
Good job very beautiful.
Amazing restoration, I love watching videos like these. I learn so much. Looking forward to seeing your future projects.
Awesome, thank you!
Amazing! Fantastic work!
Thank you!
Stunning! Beautiful job, Tom. I enjoy building speakers, myself. I find the sanding and masking THE most important part to getting a nice finish. The more time spent on sanding and prep, the better the finished cabinet will look. I remember these beasts when I was in my teens back in the '70's. I had the pioneer catalogue with all the different speakers in it. Wish I still had it!
Many thanks Steve!
Great job Sir..
You are a true artist! Stunning job!
Thanks Alfredo!
First-class job Sir. I am impressed. They look fantastic.
