Lois' Watercolour for beginners, a simple hake & flat brush seascape, beach landscape watercolor

Here I show you how to paint a simple beach scene, Hove Beach using mostly just a hake and a flat brush, looking at using unpainted white paper, or negative space for the sea :-)

I’m a novice water color painter who just found you! I want to thank you for being such a generous teacher who speaks little of herself but rather concentrates on just what a new painter needs to know - very clear, well paced explanations to go with the same type illustrations. Although I don’t have a 3/4 flat brush, I do have a large Hake and hope to make do with what I have for the beach scene - can’t wait to start.

Thank you, Lois. This is so soft and relaxing. I don't live by the sea but I can certainly "smell" it from here! One can do so much with very few materials--a couple of brushes and fewer than half a dozen colours! :)

the ocean thing really intimidated me but i gave it a go and mine looks okay - i learned a lot. I'm being challenged by making things too balanced like with the rocks but again it's all an experiment for me with this and the hake brush etc. Thank you for detailed and clear directions!!

I have watched several of your seascapes and will watch them again before I attempt one for myself. Interesting to hear I can add some white gouache. I am afraid my paper will be too creamy rather than white for waves, spray.

I notice from watching your demos that you use tube colour rather than block paint. I have lots of the block and no tubes so therefore reluctant to buy tubes. Is there a big disadvantage using my palette paints?

I have just found you!! I’m a Brit in USA. I’m trying to find the second tip you have, you are the only teacher I have heard who said, if the water is on the paper, then way less in the paint. Please help me.
Great tutorial! I've noticed quite a few watercolor artists use fresh paint from the tube. For those of us who have palettes with dried paint in the pans, is there a method to reactivate it (ex. on a mixing palette) without making the results watery? Or would you recommend just using fresh-from-the-tube all the time? Thank you!
Love this, I’m definitely going to try it. I’m just curious about what you do about the ‘Arches’ brand name in the corner when you do a painting for sale. Do you avoid using that part of the paper?

Hi, Lois. I see that you use Saunders paper pretty regularly in your videos. Are there advantages over Arches paper? I use Arches but never tried Saunders. Thank you and thank you for your inspiration.

You would think an art channel would upload videos with a higher res than 360. 1080p is standard these days and has been for quite a while.
This is an old video when my internet setup was poor, but all recent videos are 1080p as I now live somewhere with reliable and speedy internet connection

I usually use quarter imperial sized sheets, eg. 11" x 15"/28 cm x 38 cm :-)
What is a hockey brush? I'm in the US and can't find it on Google. I love this painting and want to use what you use!
It’s a Japanese brush, a Hake brush, pronounced Harki
