I hadn't checked you out in a minute J, glad to see you found these guys... they are a really tight band with some serious grooves. The bass line never fails to be awesome!
Level 42 was a UK-formed band who seemed to be appreciated everywhere for their talent, though they only had two big US hits: This song, and a much bigger hit, "Something About You," which helped cross them over into America. They are also a fantastic live band, whose earlier work consisted of Jazz-funk instrumentals such as "43" and "The Pursuit of Accidents," and R&B disco/funk/jazz songs such as "Love Games" and "Starchild." Band frontman Mark King is the lead singer who does slap bass like nobody's business, and Mike Lindup is the keyboardist and second vocalist who handles the choruses, usually in falsetto. The original drummer and guitarists were the Gould Brothers, Phil and Boon, with that part of the lineup changing over the years.
That was the baddest bass line ever. They layered their music and the lyrics were on point. Nothing cheap about this band.

As an 80s/90s kid I totally forgot about this song until recently. When I heard it a couple months ago, I forgot how much of a banger it is. Dudes voice is so smooth on that breakdown
You need to watch a live performance so you can see Mark play bass while he’s singing. Truly a great musician.
This song was used during the credits for the John Cusack movie Hot Pursuit... but instead of a car it's a boat.
And try to play that bass-line at sing at the same time. I saw them the first time in 1985. Insane.
Dude, that drum beat sounds exactly like "St. Elmo's Fire" from about a year before this. Check out John Parr's 1985 song "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)." The drums even both come in at about ten seconds.

Its kinda tragic that Mark plays like a machine and processes his bass so much that you could believe its a synth instead of an outstanding bass player.
Simple?
Look ,, simple is words to a beat, with a few lush keys to a Bass dub.
This is people playing an instrument.
Try it one of these days.
You will never call another tune with real musicians simple.
Simplicity isn't an indictment against them as musicians. I believe you misconstrued my point. It's simple not as it pertains to their musicianship I even stated that the sound is simple yet the musicality is actual quite complex.
You seem the not understand the concept of simple yourself. Simplicity is often what makes a piece great, and it is something that many actual musicians have trouble with (they over embellish and over complicate)
