I do not care for Linux to be the dominant desktop but I would love for it to get to the point where it does not get ignored by developers and we can actually get drivers.
We have "drivers", it's called the Linux Kernel.
@@notjustforhackers4252 Sure but I am saying is that with every new product that comes out there is a driver for it. What I also mean is that we get the same GUI as all the other operating systems. Not some 20 naar old version (nvidia) or the community needing to make everything like with Logitech or Razer hardware, etc...

As a Linux user I buy Linux supported hardware, it says so on the box. What do you mean "same GUI as all the other operating systems"... which one? Windows 7? 8? 11?... MacOS? ChromeOS? Android? iOS?
@@notjustforhackers4252 For example the Logitech mouse under windows has a full accompanying program to configure it, if the community did not help half of the features of the mouse would not work. Pretty much the same for Elgato or Razer.
Even AMD that is touted as being the most open gpu and the one to have under linux doesn't port all of it's function to linux.

Where's the confusion? Elgato don't support Linux so I have a Blackmagic. Logitech? I have a Wooting. Simple and not very complicated. I get what you're saying, but it really is up to those companies if they what to sell products to Linux users.... and proprietary drivers are the last thing we want.

China government is changing all their government workstations to linux, estimated to be around 50 million workstations. That alone will give linux a huge boost.

FreeDOS is more useful. I like it because it has a clean separation of Church and OS. Just like the founding fathers of my country originally intended. Also, its lead developer hasn't run out in front of a train (yet?), so at least in the meantime I think it has a brighter future.

I'll also remind everyone that in addition to Linux running most of the world, what doesn't use Linux, often uses BSD. From Mac OS to the operating system on the PlayStation from PS3/Vita onwards, to the massive ZFS+ JBOD that Netflix administers to keep all of their videos available to subscribers. *Open Source* truly does run the world.
7:18 I think you missed the biggest part of this story. Gaming on Linux speculates that this rise in market share isn't directly related to the Steam Deck because the data is from website traffic and they doubt people are browsing the internet on their Steam Deck.
I mean, could the steam store have third party cookies in it from these tracking sites? That would be a good question to ask
Eh, I might be wrong but to me that reasoning sounds quite weak. One of the Steam Deck’s selling points is that it can easily transform into a decent small desktop PC, and I frequently hear of people using their Decks as a general computer on a regular basis. I’m sure _some_ deck owners use it almost exclusively for games, but I don’t think it’s very uncommon for people to use it as a computer too
@@MrHumbuck please show some data... its very limited as a desktop PC with SteamOS on it. Its designed for gaming, and I'd argue that hardly anyone, besides a few people who show it off, use it for anything but gaming. If its a gaming machine not made for web browsing, the assumption would be that it would be used the way it was marketed and sold. If you think its being highly used in a different way than that, please show some evidence.
During last year statcounter Linux market share in India grew from 8.31% to 15.68%.

I mean. Linux has been on my desktop on and off for about 28 years. And now Microsoft are doing a push to make it more popular. :)
I never even really truly considered it until W11 released. That just was a stab to me as a person who is an advocate to not throw away what's working perfectly fine. The requirements are ridiculous and disgraceful to people as me who have to live on a budget. Linux it is.

Thanking W11's stupid requirements for it. But it incentivized me to learn something that will actually respect my older hardware. It was worth it.
Windows 11 is a virus, not an OS. Viruses try to get your information, spy on you, then transmit that data back to somebody. I hear they are also going to start showing ads on the Start menu.
My hardware is completely fine with W11 but I still find it kind of annoying

Used to use Linux Mint as my daily desktop for years. I succumbed to the convenience of Windows recently, but I'm all for going back to Mint once compatibility improves due to market share increase.
It's always nice to see that people are open minded to go for just whatever is more convenient for them. if that's the case all we have to do is have merit in linux being more convenient.
Just be sure to speak out on what you're missing from linux :)
@@ghosthunter0950 I am in the same boat, I have moved back and forth between linux mint and windows, My biggest complaint with linux is just the lack of software compatibility for proprietary hardware, I love my stream deck and have gotten it to work on linux but it was far harder than it was on windows, and I keep running into problems like that where I try to do something on both, and I solve the problem far faster and with less stress with windows. I love the customization available with linux mint, but even something like downloading a program, on linux mint, it might be in the package manager, it might have multiple versions, and sometimes it has multiple listings in the package manager, and I don't know which version is best for me especially if the version numbers aren't listed. On windows most downloads automatically detect which version of windows you are running and automatically download the exact version of the software that they think is going to run best on your computer.
I would love to switch to linux full time, but for me, I spend more time fixing my computer than I spend using it when I use linux mint.

For me to use linux full time, it has to be the operating system I spend the least time fixing, per hour I am using it.

I am working on PCs and servers since 1979. I started to use Linux professionally 23 years ago (with Debian severs) but was hesitant to leave MacOSX and Windows on my desktops. In 2008 I finally made the desktop switch and that was one of the best IT decisions I made in my life. Initially the desktop road was a bit bumpy but the effort was worth the peace of mind through stability, security and freedom. I am all in with the KDE Plasma desktop. And the future of Linux is bright. Who would have thought that decades ago?
Sometimes a good thing requires a bit of time to cook before consuming it. Linux desktop needed a bit of time to cook and I'm loving it so far. With what Ms is doing it's the perfect time for the linux desktop to blow up.

i saw some news sometime ago that said that windows had 1.8 billions of users and android 2.3 billions, wich means despite launching many years after, android already surpassed windows.
considering that microsoft tried to enter the mobile OS market before android was a thing, with their windows mobile... that is even more impressive!
nowadays android is in about 3 billions of devices (i think that only include phones and tablets, im not sure if tvs and other stuff are included in this count).

I think even more interesting are the numbers from India rather than worldwide. Linux has overthrown MacOS there long time ago and is more than 15% making the second place as desktop operating system. Even wilder is that this number has basically doubled in the last year. It was close to 8% in March 2023. So if that continues, this means exponential growth in the most populated country of the world. That's impressive.
I'd love to see Linux usage stats as a worldwide total.

As much as i want to switch to linux, apparently my work is preventing me from doing that. Since many of the software i require use needed 1 to 1 compatibility with the likes of Autodesk, and Adobe. GIMP might not cut it since it breaks the PSD layering and data. Blender might have a higher chance because it is widely supported.
I wonder when linus tech tips will switch over to linux or start using it more often in videos. The more often they talk about it, the more popular it will become.

Lutris just updated to 0.5.17 but now it won't display games that have not yet been installed on my system from any connected accounts, tried logging out and back in and changing settings and refreshing but nothing. Can't find any online help for it as well.
I am desperate to switch to Linux but Clip Studio Paint is not available on it, and seems to be full of bugs when people get it to run. I myself had it crashing over and over. And that software is 90% of what I need a computer for. :/
Not to mention my Tourbox probably won't work on it.

Yep, 2022 i started learning linux, i've been using windows since 3.11, and 10 will be my last.
And by "learning linux" i don't mean Ubuntu or Mint. When i install, it's CLI only, then i install what ever i need from there.
Make the changes i want, customize what i want. Make scripts that i use as services on launch.
Best advice i can say about learning linux, do it on a secondary pc, learn it, break it, fix it, get comfortable with it.
Well personally i didn't just use a secondary, i have A LOT of pc's... So i also learned backup and restore and migrating from one pc to the next. So right now, i have 8 pc's that have installed linux. 7 of them have Nvidia gpus, and. They work perfectly fine, with the propietary driver.
That said... linux, is not for everybody. But i recommend it, if you are a poweruser.
So, Arch or Gentoo? Viable, for sure. But all I want is just having control over what I do. Which is already what more known distros can do, still way more than current Windows ever does. Right now chilling on Ubuntu Budgie, it impresses me so far.

@@MichaelDustter Thanks, i did uninstall it, but the fact that they have it in there by default, and for some reason it takes priority, even if there is a deb package just gives bad vibes of what direction buntu is going. And some other difficulties i ran into using it as desktop. So for desktop purpose i use Arch, for servers i use debian.

I would love to make the switch to linux permanently, but for me to do that, I have to spend more time using my computer, than I spend fixing it. Currently when I run linux mint, I spend far more time fixing my computer than I do using it, when I run windows I spend far more time using my computer than I do fixing it. When I can run linux and spend less time fixing it than I spend using it, I will make the switch within minutes of that being the case. Until then because I want to use my computer and not fix it, I am forced to continue to use windows. Which makes me miserable, but less miserable than linux does currently. But linux is so close and has so much potential.
umu is a great project! Being able to run Windows games with Proton outside of Steam has immense potential to further accelerate the move of gamers to Linux. I really hope this takes off and becomes a standard app on all major Linux desktops.

Have a look at proton db. You'll see whats available to play easily enough. Its mostly games with anticheats that give issues, but I've been playing hell divers 2 with very few issues overall on a full linux machine
My server currently runs on freebsd, but my previous one ran on debian.
I have a Second Hard Drive with a Nobara Installation, but right now i still use Windows most of the time.
Everything i want to play just doesn't work well on Linux right now, hope someday it changes.
Before 2020, I always moved back and forth between Linux and Windows, but since then I have always been on Fedora's side. Enjoying my time, two times a year I have major updates and more stability than Arch.
I am working with Linux for >20 years now and I observed two major things:
- When I have Linux, I don't want to use Windows at all -- I do only, when I need to use some software not running on Linux
- Linux could have much more success, when the development efforts were more focused and the different projects would have more focus on customer experience.
I recently bough a new mini PC (asus pn52) for my living room TV. It didnt come with Windows preinstalled, so lo and behold I am now running Ubuntu 24.04 (beta) LTS. Its exciting because its my first daily drive Linux GUI PC. (I have prior experience with servers, and Raspberry Pi). Works great, except a few weird behaviors, especially with the Discord application (and MPV with 4k HDR content). Hoping those will be resolved when 24.04 LTS is officially launched. Which I heard is just around the corner, which is why I went for the beta instead of 22.04.
Gaming on Linux has come to the point that I'm going to be making the switch as soon as I pickup a second SSD

I switched one of my systems over to Linux Mint earlier this year and I find myself using it more than my Windows system. It just feels more accessible and games load faster. I should have made the switch sooner. I've yet to run into a game that has given me any problems since I play almost exclusively single player games. Proton Experimental has handled everything wonderfully. The Steam Deck was my gateway into Linux and now I've got the bug to find a used Ryzen based Thinkpad to start playing around with other distros. I'm so happy with my Mint install that I don't dare touch that one, haha.

I think if umu works as intended, that is the greatest news ever. Because I've always struggled with Lutris or Heroic to get the games running while on Steam it just works. That really bothered me because as far as I understand it. When you can't even launch games with your FOSS game launcher, what's the deal to even have it?
So hopefully this makes Lutris an actual game launcher as I see it. Being able to launch games.
Still not sure why we must have Lutris and Heoric to support multiple store fronts. Looks like unnecessary fragmentation to me splitting contributors. I mean, I get why people want Lutris to be the only launcher they need. So I don't understand why we need two FOSS launchers. But here we are.

I've been running Linux off and on since the mid 1990s, I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe since Microsoft has such abysmal management now but even the cult of Mac could never cut very far into MSFT desktop share since DOS/Win3.1x.

I've used linux since pretty near the beginning, but there were only two times I could legit use it basically all the time, the last few years thanks to proton being one. The first time though was around 2001-2004ish when Loki was porting commercial games to linux. There was a real sense at that time that Linux domination was right around the corner. In the late 90's Linux was genuinely superior to windows in many fundamental ways, most desktop users wouldn't get a WinNT based system until XP in 2003 and 98 was a total piece of crap. Loki had a number of contracts and had ported my favorite games at the time including Tribes2 and Civ3. I think a lot of people don't know about Loki since it was so long ago now. They created LibSDL as part of that effort which some games even today use including Stardew Valley for example.
Time to move to BSDs..

Not just adobe there is a lot of software that is unavailable for linux fir examplenthe software used in hospitals to control and make X rays is only avaliable on windiws with no alternatives
@@definitlynotbenlente7671 Usually, software can run on Linux, unless the company actively tries to block Linux users from it. For example, Roblox used to work on Linux, then they blocked Linux users. The dependency on Windows is largely manufactured
The competitor in me wants to know the total of Linux users including the ones who don't ever show up in the stats because of security hardening and being off the surveillance grid. The Linux ideals lover in me hopes they're never found.

That's cool, but not necessarily good news for Linux users in general.
The more market share it's going to grab and the more targeted it will become. If it reaches anything significant in terms of market share for "personal use", private companies will jump on it and ruin it eventually, and governments will also end up passing laws to restrict parts of the freedom that comes with it, as freedom in general has been attacked meticulously for many years now.
The moment the "average joe" uses Linux as an OS rather than Windows (or even Android, which, apart from the kernel, is pumped full of "backdoors"), we'll have to switch to FreeBSD. Or something.
So rushing this outcome is not a good idea. Keep it cool and slow.

First, how would that be inflation? The Steam Deck is a Linux machine. So it counts.
But second, the way they collect this information is based on 1.5 million different websites sharing their web traffic. Most people don't use their Deck to regularly surf the web. So if anything, the explosion of Linux growth in these numbers is in spite of the Steam Deck's growth.
I read somewhere (probably on Mastodon) that the crypto handheld only exists because its creators haven't figured out how to make an AI scam yet...

Linux gaming is higher than the numbers show... I run 2 Linux gaming systems that are never connected to the internet.... so the actual Linux gaming numbers are definitely higher than shown.

@@andreasplosky8516 Oh, you think I am the only one?! Just consider the number of small handheld retro game devices that are sold.... that run Linux and don't even have wifi or ethernet. These devices are best sellers because they are cheap.... but many of them work quite well for their intended purpose. So wake-up, smell the coffee (in a Linux world).

microsoft already ported some applications to linux, their "AI studio" require linux to run , they said they "love linux", i think microsoft might have realized they will lose and they want to prepare the territory for when that happens, they tried to use office to bring more people to windowsphone, but almost no one use an office at an phone, and people were more likely to ditch their office on phones than android , so they had to support android, the same can happen in the desktop.
4% agains 72% might not sound like much, but if we count chromeOS we have almost 10% of their user base (6% against 72%), and then we have this "unknow", that might be windows, might be linux or macOS... if its linux then we might have up to 13%, but i think its only fair to not count it for anyone.
anyway, what matter is the ecosystem, if linux become big enough to have first party support from other companies without the need of an wine-like solution, then its game over for microsoft.

Linux is getting a bigger share of the market, and the Steam Deck seems to be a not insignificant driver of its user growth. I'll personally be sticking to my desktop PC and PS5 for my gaming needs, I didn't enjoy playing games on a small screen on the Gameboy Advance or on my phone and tablet in recent years, I crave playing with a controller with a big screen, sinking into my comfy chair.

Gaming has always been the last thing you couldn't do on linux, and right now most games run better on it than on windows. Just a few games are not compatible, and for me they're not even games I'd like to play.
I agree with you overall... but... most games do not run better in Linux than Windows. Some do, but its only a few. Many run the same, and many more also run worse, but still good enough.
There is also a lack of CAD programs on linux as well as a lot of programs that do not have linux suport but mabey that will change in the future if linux continues to grow

A market share of over 4% sounds awfully low, especially compared to Windows or even Apple Macs. But can we briefly remind ourselves that almost every computer comes pre-installed with Windows (or MacOS in Apples case). Most users don't care about the OS, as long as it runs.
So the 4% Linux market share are precisely the users who have deliberately opted for Linux. Doesn't anyone here understand how incredible that is? Honestly: In my eyes, the 4% is a (qualitatively) stronger statement than the 80%+ of Windows.

Blockchain is not yet game worthy in my opinion. Its basically just gambling. But Crypto currency absolutely has it's place as a means of hedging against a predatory centralized banking system that can endlessly print money and devalue the currency as a whole.
If it's not a currency backed by the good faith and credit of the US government, then it's not a currency worth using or trusting.

"Trusting" in something is a vulnerability that blockchain solves, at least as a means of storing value, and processing transactions. While I agree blockchain technologies as they are today come with an inherit risk and are not often used by people in a way that is commensurate to what blockchain offers. I still think crypto has its place for maintaining some level of freedom in an increasingly technocratic and authoritarian paradigm.
No, I get that blockchain is supposed to remove trust from the equation, but look where that's got us: a cottage industry of scammers and speculation. "You shall know them by their fruits" and the fruits of crypto is rug pulls and NFTs. It is **all** a scam.
@@gardiner_bryant I certainly agree there is a lot of scams and straight up bad economic design in a lot of crypto projects, but I just hesitate to throw the baby out with the bath water. I don't think we are at a point in time where crypto is ready for prime time, and the market absolutely requires one to be patient and aware of the trends to optimize the benefits. But bitcoin for example is still a somewhat reliable hedge against inflation much the way gold is. And it has payed off for anyone who dollar cost averaged from more than a year or so.

Nice to hear about umu. People always insisted that you wouldn't be able to decouple Proton from Steam whenever I suggested it. I want to see it used with non-gaming apps, like Blu-Ray player software, graphic design stuff, etc.
You were always able to run Proton outside of steam by just setting the wine instance paths. It is a bit convoluted as no proper examples can be found. I can paste one if y'all like.
By manually launching it this way you can even let programs run in the same Proton prefix, for example cheat engine, to hook into a game's process
