I’m sure she doesn’t need criticism from CZcams... She’s an amazing musician and is capable of realizing her own strengths and weaknesses in her work. Amazing performance.
Guys, just leave her alone, I think she already understood the inconsistent tempo, doesn't matter besides that she is fantastic, and a good technicue!

If y’all are really critiquing her on technique and tempo than you don’t understand the concept of musicality, stretching phrases especially in the quasi cantabile section displays an ability to make the music your own. So please don’t speak on this ladies name again thank you

As someone who accompanied a trumpet player on this etude, this was literally my go-to recording. Killer playing, and maybe I can play the part like this too one day?

I thought she nailed it. I also don't think there were issues with inconsistent tempo. Remember, this an early Modernist era piece, done in a Romantic style - tempo is allowed to fluctuate based on interpretation of the artist. I'm fully of the belief that her tempo shifts were done on purpose and well within her right to do so. Very very nicely done on a difficult piece of music.
I’m a “leisurely” trumpet player, and thought this an impressive rendition. I remember hacking through this piece for a district band audition in high school. This was definitely performed beyond my abilities!

how did it go
I played this, as a 16 year old junior in high school at contest, and at the same speed. I remember the judge's comments: "You took speed as your primary concern with this piece. And although you only barely cracked two notes, you sacrificed everything for speed. Amazing dexterity!" Score: 84 (2nd division). In those days we had to have our solos memorized. It's one's own interpretation, and a decent judge/human being doesn't downgrade a high school student's rating because the judge doesn't agree with tempo. Harry Zimmer, (judge) you bastard, I still remember you from this experience from 1967, Solo & Ensemble contest, held at Mundelein H.S., Illinois. You might cheat on your friends, business associates, and some cheat on their spouse, but YOU NEVER CHEAT A KID, Harry...NEVER!
Ronald Picker I had an experience similar to this as well last year with my solo and ensemble, I went group 1 and my piano player unfortunately had an unlikely event happen the day before my performance so I had to resort to a piano play along track specifically made for the piece and the judge said “First of all great tonguing, however the tempo was too fast, you didn’t mess anything up it was just too fast and therefore lacks musicianship and if it was the right tempo I would have given you a Gold”. I got a silver medal that day.

Here's more: After I graduated high school, I auditioned for, and got into the best of the 4 bands at the University of Illinois as a FRESHMAN, playing 2nd trumpet, progressed to 1st trumpet, won the University's Brass Jury Award as a junior, won the Harding Award for highest achievement in bands, and was president of the band my last year, not to mention a tuition scholarship for all 4 years. This same terrible judge on the day of that same high school contest also gave my high school trumpet playing stand partner (fellow sat 1st chair ahead of me in high school...a naturally gifted player) a 2nd division; score 89. The piece my buddy played was SO difficult the music department in my high school couldn't find a pianist ( high school of 2200 students) who could play the accompaniment! So my buddy had to play it unaccompanied... he got an 89 from the same judge. The judge's comment...I can't give you a 1st division because you had no accompanist. Well, my buddy went on to direct the jazz band and give private lessons at a major university, as a graduate student, after having completed 4 years as a leading trumpeter at Northwestern University. He chose jazz over classical His first job was playing in Woody Hermann's band, and he ended his playing career as solo trumpet with Frank Sinatra's band. He has recorded a couple CD's (soloist/small group) in the area of jazz/fusion, which sold commercially. FYI: An even better "fast" rendition of Concert Etude is on the you tube menu to the right by the Alan International Ensemble. It's played by an older Asian male trumpeter, with greater musicality and accuracy than Matilda Lloyd's rendition. It's all a matter of personal interpretation. Even the greatest conductors, past and present can't decide unanimously how to play the first 4 notes, of Beethoven's 5th symphony! :) Good Luck in the future.

One time. My band went to compition. They played a hard peice like college level (middle school band) and one of the judges put such a low score Becuase it was so hard. But the entire band played it good

The “slow” parts are mostly ritandos. Not necessarily dragging. Some parts were a little inconsistent but nothing wrong with it

Makes me want to pick my trumpet back up after 10 years...I may not have ever been an amazing player, but damn I enjoyed playing.
Not sure I could still do it now, but I started this at about 60-70% speed for a competition in high school, aimed and eventually got to this speed, as it was written. Much like other comments here, the judges commented that the quality was more important than playing it up to speed and were pleased I took it at an appropriate pace. It's nice to see a video on the youtubes going the intended (if slightly varying) speed, at least.

I tried to play this for solo and ensemble competitions in high school, and listening to this, I find myself saying, "so THAT'S what it's supposed to sound like!" Very VERY well done. And suddenly I remember how much I hated trying to play that infernal thing.

@@deathblossom1153 You will do well. I think I got a "1" (top rating) so even an oaf like me could play it acceptably by high school standards; I just got no joy out of it. If you shoved a trumpet in my face these days, I'd probably happily play Pazu's song from "Castle in the Sky"; not very challenging, but it's catchy.

There is no doubt that she has remarkable ability. At the same time the criticisms here are very valid. A player of her caliber would have easily pulled off a much more impactful performance if she (as many have pointed out) took it slower to avoid the many tiny mistakes made as a result of dialing the tempo up to 11.
That depends on the audience as far as impactful. Teachers etc. would agree with you that taking it slower to make it clean would far superior. However for general audiences, they might be more 'wowed' by the spectacle of it being fast, because they don't notice all the imperfections.

I played this a lot over the years mini years ago. This is the tempo that I chose. Maybe I did a little faster. Some of the attacks are a little rough. I would recommend to anyone who is interested to seek out the performance by Leonard Smith, which was in my mind the urtext for this piece

Amazing technique, but incredible tempo, it is on the lower side of presto, Goedicke writes Allegro molto. She is at about 164. I understand it is easier for the trumpet player if it's faster, but on the other hand...

Stellar talent, great player. She clearly understands most aspects of the piece and seems to communicate well with the piano. However, the tempi are woefully inconsistent. There are so many spots where the eighth notes are rushed. The key to playing this piece properly is maintaining the tempo. It is the one thing not open to interpretation. I still have yet to hear one recording online that interprets the "Pesante" line appropriately. Players do not seem to grasp what Goedicke intended for the trumpet player with that remarkable writing.
Hahahaha shut up, you square! It's music. The tempo doesn't have to be perfectly consistent for it to be enjoyable. This is a fantastic performance of this piece! I don't think she needs your mansplaining on how to play it properly. Come out with a recording that can compare to hers and then you'll have something to say. Pssh…

How would you know what Goedicke intended though
How would I know? A teacher of one of my trumpet instructors knew Goedicke personally, and he passed down the proper interpretation to him... and then to me. My own private students have consistently scored high on this particular piece, because there are correct and incorrect ways to interpret the piece. To say it doesn't matter is artistically irresponsible.
@@GettingItDone but if it’s interpretation then maybe it’s just how one person wants it to sound like. The purpose of an interpretation (in music) is to play it how you see fit.

Did you make it? You could also try the Hummel concerto 1st movement or Caprice by Joseph Turrin, both very fun pieces

She made an artistic choice as the artist that she is, and sounds fantastic with her choice. None of her playing was hindered by the speed she played this piece, and if she is happy with the choice that she made that is all that matters.
yeah, but some pieces are meant to be played faster than what it should be like festive overture. it sounds great, but sometimes playing something fast doesn't make it better

Nice job! A bit fast. "Maybe," interpretation is an artist thing. The piano had a bit of trouble keeping up with her at times. She did a nice job all in all.🎺 That tempo by the way is consistent with the way I played it. I used a cornet instead of trumpet. I like the softer sound.

Tempo was very inconsistent and double tounging was sloppy at all state solo i wouldve given this a 70/10p fo just the solo. Many cracks in low notes were heard very easily.
chubbylilnative tempo is a matter of relativity. It was in a relative range and conducted the right feeling behind the music. That's what music is all about. Technique is the half of it. Only half I believe

That's the adrenalin kicking in. She probably rehearsed this a tad slower.
There needs to be compromise between soloist and accompanist for how fast you're taking it. The accompanist on this sounds like he's rushing every sixteenth passage and having a really hard time keeping up. The soloists breathing patterns get WAY off and the sound production tends to suffer because it's just WAY too fast. Is it impressive? Yes. She showed ability, but not musicality. Goedicke never intended for it to go that fast. He wanted the Slavic gusto that every other composer from that region had at the time, Not a flight of the bumblebee equivalent for trumpet. Taking things slower doesn't mean you're not a good player, it tends to make things more musical. It lost all pulse when on the cantible parts it dropped a solid 20 clicks and then jerked back into the fast tempo. Double tonguing on the F#-B° arpeggiated section noticably dropped in tempo. That's one of the hardest passages in the piece. If you can only take that line at a certain tempo, keep the whole song in a 5bpm (at most) range of THAT tempo. Room for error on both sides. It keeps you from jumping your tempo all over the place throughout the piece and makes it flow a whole lot better.
"Goedicke never intended for it to go that fast." And he told you this personally? That's why music (and quite literally every form or art) is personal and open to interpretation. You don't have to agree with her choices, but don't tell her she's wrong.
