The Blue Angels were originally formed in April 1946 as the Navy Flight Exhibition Team. They changed their name to the Blue Angels after seeing the New York nightclub The Blue Angel, also known as The Blue Angel Supper Club. The team was first introduced as the Blue Angels during an air show in July 1946.

You are 100% right. My uncle and grandmother lived fairly close to the airport. My uncle was in the Air National Guards which was located at the airport. Several times the Blue Angels did a free air show over the neighborhoods surrounding the airport. My uncle said it was to thank them for putting up with the noise of the jets. He always let us know when they would be in town so we could go watch. To this day I get a thrill remembering the things they did and with such precision! It would have been around 1963 - 1965 when I saw them, if my memory serves me correctly or comes close to serving me. lol I think I also saw the Thunderbirds. As you said KJ, I will always remember! It’s cool to watch on screen but to really get the adrenaline going you must see them in the sky overhead. Phenomenal! Those shows are on my list of best days ever!

I live in Pensacola Florida which is the Blue Angels home town. We love watching them fly over during their practice flights. And they do free appreciate air shows in July and November. They fly 18” apart when flying close. They also had a meet and greet several times a year at their base museum before the attack occurred several years ago. One time when the pilots were leaving they passed a line of new recruits. Each pilot stoppped and congratulated and shook each new recruits hand. That’s respect.

When flying in formation, like my Thunderbirds, and Blue Angels do, the only one looking straight forward, is the Flight Lead. The wingmen on either side of the Lead, pick a point on the Lead's aircraft and fly to keep themselves a certain distance behind, and level with, that point (That is why you saw the camera's pilot only looking at the lead plane as they departed the runway and formed-up). The slot aircraft does the same, except he picks a point under the Lead's tail section, and tries to keep the same distance from that point. It is very dangerous, flying this way, and takes great skill and MUCH practice! This is how a whole USAF Thunderbird team was killed a few decades back. During a practice, the wingmen were all keeping their eyes on the Lead, as they should have been, when something happened to either the Lead pilot or the Lead aircraft. They were doing a loop, when the Lead plane crashed to the desert floor, and all the other team members followed him into the ground. A very sad day for the U.S.A.F.

I've seen the Blue Angels perform 3 times and the Thunderbirds (US Air Force's exhibition team) 4 times. Blows my mind every single time. I prefer the Thunderbirds, I always loved the F-16, and they uave a really badass paint job of a giant falcon on the belly of the jets. The exhibition teams are insanely skilled pilots. The Blue Angels do the Cleveland Air Show almost every year, so I get a full week of these guys doing maneuvers and practice right over my house. I can sit on the porch with a beer and see blue and yellow F-18s flying so low over the neighborhood I can actually see the details of the pilots' helmets or if they wave or anything. They are truly incredible.
I highly recommend going to an air show to see either thr Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds. Words cant describe the sound of the afterburners overhead, it's something you have to feel and hear yourself in person, it's quite the experience seeing these guys and gals.
They can carry a good amount of fuel. Their show usually last about 20-30 minutes, full of crazy fuel burning stunts. They don't carry reserve tanks on the wings like fighters do, but I believe the F-18s the Amgels fly are specially modified in many ways specifically for the stunt team, so it's possible the jets have an increased fuel capacity but I'm not actually sure about that.
I'm gonna guess they don't get dizzy. I'd assume that people who get airsick would never get their wings to be pilots, let alone get on one of the world's premiere exhibition stunt teams.

Love seeing them when they do their aerial formations from the ground so it's super cool to see it from the cockpit. Not 100% sure; it could be a mash compilation of flights from various cities. It's definitely not Seattle in the beginning, some areas look tropical and on the coast. Those F 18 super hornet planes can go over 767 mph to break sound barrier. These guys are the best. Imagine landing one of those plane and a carrier deck that is only 1,000 long. Google their schedule .. you may b able to book a show in Georgia. A newer version of Fat Albert (Hercules) is usually showcased too along with many other performances. Of course the best are the Blue Angels. There thunder can be felt in ur entire body .. kinda like an extremely loud drum beat at a concert. Definitely worth the money.

In the maneuver, Blue Angels #1 leads a pack of four who fly closely - just 1 ½ feet from each other - in a diamond shape. In fact, it's so close, that in 2019 two jets touched while practicing a Diamond 360. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft, other than a small scratch.

I can tell that a lot of it was filmed in Seattle (seen them perform MANY times there; they do a performance every year for the city Seafair celebration), but I also recognize Chicago I think. They do a couple of practice flights leading up to the actual performance so they can identify landmarks, get their timing for maneuvers down, recognize special considerations they need to emply, and so on. In those shots where you see a LOT of boats that's Lake Washington and the I-90 floating bridge. They use the unlimited hydroplane race course as the centerline for their performance.

Hey L. True that they got their name from The Blue Angel nightclub. They are based in pensacola Fla during air show seaon, and in california the rest of the year. each jet burns about 8 thous. lbs or 1200 gallons of fuel per hour. On some of their maneuvers they fly within one and a half feet of each other, and a few years ago during a training flight, 2 of them actually touched. No harm no foul thankfully. Got a quick story L. You were talking about the guys in the military getting used to these flights. they do, but they never take them for granted. My older brother was a 30 yr Navy guy. Spent a fair number of those years, including 2 tours in Viet Nam, as a SEAL. He was in Va Beach. He worked at the Amphibious Base, but their house was closer to the Naval Air Base there. So they were kind of in the flight path. I was spending the summer with them and during that time some other family (don't remember if it was our side or his wifes side) came for a visit. For the first couple days, every time there was a flyover they would start complaining about the noise and how do you stand it etc etc. About the 3rd day, sure enough we could hear the 1st of what was going to be 3 or 4 jets going overhead and the complaining started. My nephew (about 10 or 11 maybe) was on the floor doing some reading, and my brother asked him what is that? He looked at his Dad like what?? My Bro pointed up and the kid cocked his head and heard the next jet coming and said what that? Thats the sound of freedom Dad. Not a single gripe from those folks the rest of their visit.

The #1 plane is in control. He is the only one that really looks forward, and he calls all the shots. His wingmen focus on his plane, and adjust to stay in sync with him. The people off of their wings (usually #5 and #6) focus on their respective wingman's plane adjusting to sync with them. The #4 plane is usually behind, and below #1. He focuses mainly on the #1 plane, but he has to adjust for the #2, and #3 planes as well. I don't know about the Blue Angels, but the Air Force Thunderbirds use a sing-song like cadence to call out all their maneuvers.

They used to fly so close over the barracks rooftops, you could see the guys facial expression... and if you led it right, a good thrower could have easily hit one with a baseball.

The Air Force has an expedition team called the Thunderbirds, they are amazing. I live near an Air Force base and every few years they have an air show, which is open to the public, and the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds would trade off on which team would be here. I live close enough to the base that I could watch the show from my front yard. If you get the opportunity to attend an air show I highly recommend it going at least once. You get to get up close and personnel to some amazing military air crafts.

Ok to answer your question.... The Blue Angels were named after hot restaurant in New York City. They have been in Pensacola Fla since 1946. Sometime in California. Many years ago a friend of mine was a pilot with the Blue Angels and took me for a flight while in Farmingdale NY. One of my best memories for this grandmother.
Oh by the way the jet consumes. 1,300 gallons per hour.

I hate to keep posting but at their home base at the Naval Aviation Museum there is a Blue angel simulator. There shows are usually 45 minutes. The shows on the beach are more than likely at Pensacola NAS , Pensacola, perdido key. Blue Angels got their name in 1946 after a nightclub the pilots were at in New York. Oh yeah , one goes straight up til engine stalls , free fall back the fires engine back up . At some points they are only 12-18 inches apart.

Yes it is like follow the leader, one has to watch the other as each pilot has a wing man. So they need to watch the other plane not ahead of them selves. Also communication is key.

City is Chicago at 6:19 . It’s a conglomerate of cities though cuz one was the Chesapeke Bay, one was San Francisco, and one was definitely Pensacola where they’re based. Except the leader they all look sideways. They set throttle based on experience and how quickly they’re gaining/falling back from the guys they’re trailing and next to. Also, they all wear G-suits that prevents blood rushing to your head to a degree. Still a lot of techniques involved.

  • @Mkproduction2

Pensacola is where they have their Winter base. I believe they are flying over Santa Rosa Sound, Pensacola Beach and the Gulf of Mexico
I use to watch them practice from my dock. If you were not up by 10 A.M., you were at 10:03 A.M. . The solo would come ripping by 25 feet over the trees...INVERTED!
There days when he would wave to me on the dock as he blasted by.
    BEST IN THE WORLD!!!

The pilots are looking through the wingmen, to the Boss's jet (#1). They have specific reference points they have to watch on each jet, so they can stay in formation and keep the formation symmetrical. If everyone looked ahead, they would all clip each other and someone is going to ball up a jet. The wingmen have to trust the Boss won't fly them into anything.
What will blow your mind as well is the fact the Blue Angels don't wear a G-suit while flying the shows.
Lol....I do the head turn thing all the time. Did it when I saw Top Gun Maverick too. 😂. As much as I like the Blues, I'm a bit biased toward the Snowbirds, since I'm a Canadian. 🇨🇦

Haven't you ever been to an airshow before? The Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds perform all over the country and Europe and Australia These Jets are F-18 Hornets and the pilots are put through rigorous and extensive testing, and application process. Only a few are accepted to become Blue Angels or Thunderbirds. They don't just grab some random guys and say hey do this. They are based in Pensacola FL and they practice a lot. Each performance they do is about 10-15 minutes. I saw downtown Chicago at 6:17 in the video I could see Soldier Field home of the Bears and the Sears Tower. You should to a reaction to the Tomb of The Unkown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetary and learn about that.
