Vader and Tarkin acknowledge each other’s abilities and respected that. That’s why I feel they genuinely didn’t mind doing what the other said. They weren’t taking orders from fools but a great military mind in both.

It's fairly simple. Lucas was making the story up as he went along. He originally planned on Vader being just an enforcer, hence why he takes orders from Tarkin.
Yeah that was the original plan. Also the emperor was just supposed to be a regular emperor and not a darkside force user until Empire strikes back was written and im very happy they made that decision 😁

Giving Vader a rank would have made him more a threat to Palpatine's rule. Encouraging the hostility kept Vader from amassing any support within the command structure. Palps always knew how to play Anakin like a fiddle.

I much prefer Vader's relationship with Imperial officers in the original film before they started having him kill them off in "Empire". The ones he speaks with after the attack on Tantive IV respect him, but there is no fear. They actually address him like a fellow colleague, rather than cowering before him. And unlike the rest of the series, in every scene they share, Vader is clearly subordinate to Tarkin. George completely rewrote Vader's backstory after 1977, as when the first film released he was not meant to be Anakin Skywalker. George also changed his intents for the Emperor, who only gets a "blink and you'll miss it" mention in the original.
He brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to his new Empire.

I wish we got more Tarkin post ep4. The nebulous nature of Vader's rank added captivating tension in the war room with the grand moff.
Peter Cushing even said he wished they would have brought him back, as he rather enjoyed playing Tarkin. Vader was not meant to be Anakin nor the main villain when the first film came out, hence why he takes orders from Tarkin. I honestly think it was a mistake to kill him off, as "Empire" set the precedent of Imperial officers being incompetent morons cowering before Vader, with the Empire becoming a joke, rather than a threat. Heck, just look at how embarrassing stormtroopers have become since we first saw them rip apart the defenders of Tantive IV back in 1977.

@@ericolsen5592 true, though we don't get to see most of it from the stormtrooper perspective. Just the rebels getting mauled by AT-ATs. Heck, I think the only time we've seen "grunt" stormtroopers and rebels fight with any sort of competence is Rogue One! We don't even see the rebels on the ground actually fighting during the Battle of Endor; just stormtroopers getting beat up by Care Bears on crack wielding clubs.

You (maybe) forgot about grand general tagge who was promoted after surviving the explosion of the first Death Star, he was brought into a position similar to tarkin and was since vader was demoted due to the Death Star thing he had to take orders from tagge.
True but Tagge was quickly demoted because of a few fatal career choices that led to his death and Darth Vader retaining his rank as the de-facto supreme commander of the Imperial military
@Sean Downey True but most of the ranks were made for the plot to flow smoothly, reality is more likely that even though the high ranks were given out that Tarkin and Thrawn were most definitely Palpatine’s favorite and had the most leeway. Vader would be placed wherever he needed to be but would really be on the same level as Tarkin or a rank below. The key point is TARKIN’s rank and not the rank of Grand Moff, since Palpatine would most likely give the bulwark of power to Tarkin or Vader regardless of rank
I agree, the relationship between Tarkin and Vader was very complex and is still one of my favorites.
The few times he had to work with Thrawn, he had the same dynamic as Tarkin.
Lmao no he doesn't. If you're referring mainly to the 'Alliances' book, Vaders trying to find justification to kill him throughout the vast majority of the story. The actual power dynamic is fairly one sided and explicit between them, unlike Tarkin.
Imagine in weird Twist that Luke Skywalker had a similar relationship like this with the Rebels. The story could be that Luke and Lando would have an uneasy relationship like Vader and Tarkin, along with other Rebel Commanders not liking him, but Leia or Ma-Moth-Ta would give the Young Jedi-Force User full authority to kill any Rebel he wants just like Sidious!

They grew to respect each other in Clone Wars, Vader and Tarkin that is. They might not agree with each other, and clash here and there...but they definitely respect each other. We've seen Vader choke officers in the Empire who disagreed with him or would talk back. But he would never with Tarkin out of respect and knowledge of how good at his job Tarkin was.
No, it was because uncle palpy gave a direct order to leave tarkin alone.
He did choke Tarkin one time but it was only to give message to him, without plan to actually killing him

Tarkin is the underboss and Vader is the consigliere and chief enforcer. Both report to the boss but have different roles.
Tarkin, like Thrawn, knew Vader was Anakin and had worked with him before his fall. The mutual respect built there carried over to when he became Vader.

Honestly Vader pretty much fills the same roll as Luca Brasi from The Godfather. For those unfamiliar with the books Luca only took orders from Don Corleone. Others in the family both greatly feared and respected him as he was the one who would do anything the Don asked of him. He also had a distant enough from the day to day operations that a lot of people weren't sure what his association with the family was.

I wouldn't say Tarkin and Vader "hated" each other. hell, Vader even respected Tarkin enough that he asked Tarkin to hunt him so that Vader could improve his fighting/force abilities.
Why is Vader so eerie, devious, mysterious, scary, and mischievous
It was really nice they had that citadel Arc in the clone wars series showing early on Anakin preferred Tarkins strategy and at the end sorta bonded, even though it was awhile before Tarkin figured out who Vader was it explained a lot how vader just kinda took orders from times as him when he's force choking everyone else w.o thinking twice.

I deeply hate the idea that Tarkin and Vader hated each other, because that is not what is shown on screen. They clearly respect each other, and come close to actual friendship on at least one occasion. Why else would Vader go to Tarkin to warn him of Kenobi's presence? That scene even tells us in a roundabout way that Tarkin knew that Vader was Anakin, because Vader names Kenobi as his old master. The men in A New Hope were not enemies, or even rivals. They were men who had worked closely together for along time, and had the camaraderie that comes along with it.
Yes, but that took time. They didn't start out as best buddies. They each earned the others respect over time though.
Tarkin was the only reason why Motti didn't leave the Death Star briefing room in a body bag.
Even I knew when I watched Star Wars the first time in 1977 at the last drive in theater in Louisiana at the age of 7 that Grand Moff Tarkin was the boss of the Death Star.

If you ever been a leader and manager, you know how you share power with people on the same level. You may have one project you are lead on, then you follow the leadership of your peer in a area they are lead on. Example, two deputy directors of a agency, one is in charge of the annual conference, the other in charge of the company’s hiring events. Both would stay in their own lanes; this is what happens between Darth and the Grand Moth as per the Emperors’s order.

Acting supreme commander. Thay rank normally outranks everyone. On a particular mission. . Tarkin is like a field marshal or military governor. Its a matter of jurisdiction. An admiral can be on a captain's ship and will let the captain lead , but can pull rank if necessary.
Great video. I believe that in a strange sort of way Tarken and Vader were friends. They showed each other mutual respect many times. Tarken gained Vaders respect and vice versa when Darth asked him to hunt him as a favour.
Tarkin was the brain of the empire, and Vader was the arm. Palpy was the direct reason DS got blown up - he knew how to scheme, but I don't think he was good at leading a war effort.

Per clone wars, Tarkin knew Vader was Anakin Skywalker and respected the great generals military prowess.
I watched, Obiwan Kenobi, in some scenes on the last episode it seem the Grand inquistor was equal to Vadar as he was a bit out spoken in regards to Vadars actions. Vadar remained quiet. For some reason the Inquistor seemed to find the pursuite of Obiwan less important. In all honesty, The grand inquistor was more alligned with the Emperors over all vision of dealing with Jedi. This was evident at the end when Palaptine confronted Vadar on his obsession with ObiWan. My guess the Grand InQuistor may have been ordered to take over if Darth Vadars judgement was compromised and was given instructions to proceed but the important aspect is to deal with the rebel jedit organization and not the just one Jedi master. Palpatine probably saw this as the greater threat which would be correct since the organization of the rebelian was more of a threat.
For the Emperor, the greatest threat is not rebels, or jedi, it's Vader.
The inquisitior is probably picked and supported by the Emperor, probably watching and reporting on Vader to him too. But if he'd spoke out of line Vader could have snapped him like a twig.
You do video upon how Vader's suit functions in keeping his remaining body Alive. But, have talked about how choose design of helmet and face mask.

I think Vader is like a tactical general with great autonomy in the field, and Tarkin is the strategic commander. Tarkin looks more at the campaign level, and Vader goes wherever he is needed most to complete whatever mission he, Tarkin or Palpatine sets. Tarkin feels comfortable enough to give Vader commands, and Vader respects Tarkin enough to follow most of them, knowing if he wanted to, he could simply off Tarkin anyway. He doesn't feel usurped by him, knowing Tarkin respects his power and authority as well.
None of that is accurate at all.

in Legends/novelizations prior to Disney era Vader was Supreme Commander of the Imperial Navy. It is ambiguous as to where that places him in respect to the Moffs and Grand Moffs, or even Grand Admirals.

Yes, he was over Vader also until the fall of the Empire.
Thrawn and a ysalimiri would make for an interesting confrontation with vader. vader without the use of the force in the ysaimiri's bubble would get slaughtered by a stormtrooper. he wont be much good with his lightsaber at deflecting laser bolts and hed after a few shots ,even though his suit is mostly blaster proof would get chewed up by blaster fire and he'd succumb. plus a good side kick would probably knock vader down without the use of the force to keep his power and strength going. I say Thrawn if he wanted to would have easily set vader up and killed him.

If looking at it in corporate terms Vader and Tarkin are peers or colleagues. Equal ranking in different departments. Looking into novels and stories, it's revealed they have mutual respect for one another dating back during The Clone War and during the Empire.

Given the way everything is set up it is almost along the lines of what you'd see in WWII with commanders such Eisenhower and Montgomery. Depending on the overall situation and campaign was who had the final say but Eisenhower held supreme command of U.S. forces while Montgomery held supreme command over British forces, yet the two didn't out rank each other so really it would depend what Roosevelt and Churchill ultimately decided on given the situation, much like if Palpatine have Tarkin the order he would have had to answer to Vader the same way we see certain commanders do in Empire and Return of the Jedi. But with Death Star operations Vader had to follow Tarkin's lead.
Ok, so, just clarifying, it doesn't insult Darth Vader that we know that he's really little orphan Annie; or his opinions on sand, got it. Though, one thing confuses me, he hates sand because it's coarse, rough, and gets everywhere, but what about snow? I mean, it's wet, and cold, and it gets everywhere.

In most situations he would have authority over most Imperial Officers
But in some cases like the Death Star, Tarkin who was given authority by the Emperor was given command over Vader
When Vader was temporarily demoted after Yavin, Grand General Tagge had command over him, until Vader proved himself over rogue scientist Cylo’s insurgency, and Tagge was seemed incompetent for allowing Cylo to take the Executor with the Emperor on it. This gave Vader justification to do away with Tagge and take the Executor himself
It really depends whether the Emperor gives an Imperial Officer the authority over Vader, which even then the situation may change and Vader may get the advantage

He also learned to respect thrawn. And took orders from him , only when sidious told him too tho

Tarkin is essentially a sith lord without force powers and treated as such. Vader and Palpatine respect him for being just as ruthless as they are and effective as a leader.

In Legends another person that, while Vader would not take orders from, was nonetheless able to at least "handle" Vader was Grand Admiral Thrawn. While Vader is easily more powerful than Thrawn in a physical sense, Thrawn was always a better tactician and knew how to win a war of wills with Vader.

Clearly Vader has full control over his own portion of the Empire that being the 501st Legion, but under anyone else’s directive then Vader would have to take orders especially if Sidious said so. I would believe some individuals like a Grand Admiral or a Grand Moff would have equal say to Vader though maybe not all the time, again only if order by Sidious to do so.

This may be giving the people responsible for Star Wars too much credit, but what if Vader's "lack of rank" was to make Vader on edge and envious and jealous of his reputation. He constantly had to prove himself to others and never truly "fit in." This kept him darksiding perpetually.

So short. Rank - general (and yes there are the imperial officers of a higher rank than him). Function - (nominally) minister of war. He can also pure theoretically be answerable to the Inquisition (as an institution, but not to single inquisitor).
Not really, he didn't have a rank. Palpatine didn't want him to become too entrenched in the imperial hierarchy, so vader couldn't get support to overthrow the emperor. The inquisitors could by no means hold vader accountable they were utterly loyal and afraid of him.

Vaders was Thrawns superior, for anyone saying thrawn was the same as tarkin, he wasn't, vader respected thrawn enough to listen to what he had to say but he never took orders or had a mutual level of authority with thrawn
