Episode Notes:
1. Splatterhouse captured on real PCE hardware. 2 and 3 captured on the Mega SG.
2. I used gameplay from both the US and Japanese versions of Splatterhouse throughout the video.
3. To access the hard mode in the first Splatterhouse, simply hold select on the title screen until the option appears.
4. I always thought Namco should have given this series the Metroidvania treatment. An explorable mansion, upgradeable powers, and equipable items would have been killer in a 32-bit follow up.
5. All 3 16-bit games are unlockable in the 2010 Splatterhouse for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
6. The Japanese version of part 2 is a genuinely difficult game. I can beat the US release fairly easily after a few tries and the passwords backing me up. You get just 5 continues in the Japanese Mega Drive edition, making it far more challenging.
7. The mask in the Japanese version of part 2 resembles a more "kabuki" style design, while the Western release looks more like a skull.
8. In part 3, should you do well enough on time, you can access the "Strange Zone". This is an area that allows you to score some extra lives. There are different Strange Zones and they have different monsters in them. Some are easy while some are very difficult.
9. There are a number of different endings in part 3. Those passwords really come in handy when trying to see them all. Use them. - Hry
Still remember beating this at my local 7 eleven, then beating it again on my turbografx 16. Those were the days man.
Fantastic review of an underated alltime classic series. My favourite is Splatterhouse 2 for the Genesis. Holy Moly it was such a blast in my childhood to play something morbid like this. The Intro still gives me chills nowadays ( my favourite ost of all retro games) - awesome!
Sega lord X is my favorite channel out of the many. I hope he can do another 60min special someday.
Did you look through the video list? You dont even have to go that far back to find videos over 60 minutes
@@cadwang_621 I meant one I haven’t seen
Yes! Probably my favorite game series of all time. I had Splatterhouse for the TG16 in the early 90s as a kid, definitely a life changer as it introduced me to the movies that the enemies and Rick are taken from. Someday I would love to play the FM Towns Marty version, it is supposedly "arcade perfect". I have played the actual arcade cab on a authentic PCB, and the TG16 version is very impressive how close it is to the original arcade. Legendary status for the Splatterhouse series, I really hope Namco does something else with it other than license the awesome Unbox figures. A new game would be rad!
Aside from the slight censorship (Christian imagery and the mask recolor) I _prefer_ the TurboGrafx port. 👌
You can emulate the FM Towns, Splatterhouse is pretty good on it.
If you get the Ps3 or Xbox 360 version of the game you can unlock all 3 when you beat the game.
There’s the arcade version released on the MiSTer FPGA.
@NinjaRunningWild - Even more accessibly, it's on Hamster's Arcade Archives for all major platforms 👍😎👍
Splatterhouse trilogy is the all time unique action horror games ever made in the 16-bit era of video games. To think that its made by guys who made Pac-Man, and decided to make a very violent game filled with body horror.
While I didn't find the game quite as satisfying as the first, the Splatterhouse 2 intro is one of my favourite things. 👌 Sets the mood perfectly.
The music while Jennifer is infected with the bore worm haunted me for years lol
I remember seeing the screen shots for Splatterhouse 2 in a game guide in '92. It's the only game that actually made me hesitate to play it. I wasn't so much scared of it as I was... disturbed. Like it would physically harm me and cake my soul in filth. I'm happy to report it did, and I've been in love with these games ever since.
Most horrifying detail of Splatterhouse 2 was it was on the Sega Genesis! As a TG-16 kid, this was miserable 😭
being a youngster i had never seen splatter house 1 in the arcade or ever knew someone with a turbo graphics so seeing 2 on my genesis as an introduction to the series blew my fucking socks off. I'd never seen something like that in a video game to that point it was WILD.
The first 30 seconds of the Walking Dead's opening theme is quite similar to the Splatterhouse 3 opening theme. Not for nothing the Walking Dead's music composer is a huge Mega Drive Fan 😊
Man, I'm glad I've found someone who also realised the similarities!
I need to hear the waking dead’s theme now.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 The first 30 seconds of the walking dead theme use "urgent strings" followed by a "descending motion", exactly the same concept used in the beginning of the Splatterhouse 3 opening theme 😊
happy halloween, everyone
Splatterhouse reboot is probably my most fav 360 game I own. That game has some really nice graphics on some stages.
The fact that it included ports of the classics made it even better :)
Splatterhouse's US remake sucked zombie @ss!
I hated the bland and off-brand depictions of Rick and Jennifer.
The game wasn't scary and startling at all, but rather silly and edgy unlike the classic Japanese trilogy.
The camera angles were irritating.
I bought the game on eBay a few years back but have yet to play it. Perhaps I'll save it for Halloween.
You're scared from the original? Ok@@KEN-1991
@@Vonboon11dy
Yeah I am, it creeped me TF out, and that's a good thing!
The enemy characters came straight out of a creepypasta, even the fight with Jennifer as a mutant was intense and upsetting.
I like these compilation videos. This was fun to watch! Keep doing them because there is a lot of stuff you've done I have never seen and these comp videos help me see it.
Splatterhouse was the first game we bought for the Turbografx-16. My brother and I spent all Summer playing - and then beating- the game. It was an amazing game for its time.
Thank you for what you do and the work you put intothese video's. They are always entertaining. Your presentation is very reminiscent to sitting down with friends with a beer and saying "remember that game?" or "Dude, remember when we used to play that one game?" etc. 🙂
Perfect!
I was just rewatching the last episode, wishing there was more;
Then this episode got uploaded!
Cheers!
Would have thought we'd see this compilation out closer to Halloween, but oh well. Classic series like this is great anytime of year.
wasnt able to play this first splatterhouse game until the 360 version came about that you can can unlock the old games like in dracula x
I like your pivot to NEC TG-16. You’re doing a good job. I couldn’t get a TG-16 mini. I never owned the original, but I always read about the games in EGM and GamePro back in the day. I was able to import a PC Engine mini a few years ago, and it is really fun, with great shooters.
3 x brilliant reviews in one =D It's a shame you didn't include the Famicom spin off version in this!
Another Sega Lord X video. My day is now complete.
I love the channel Sega Lord X!
I never did Splatterhouse as a kid but thanks to the magic of multi carts I have recently played the series on Genesis. Probably would've loved it as a kid.
Back in that day, I had SplatterHouse for the TG16, I loved it! That and Ninja Spirit are its 2 bast games IMO.
17:55 : You always compare the original Vs the 2nd one ,and your conclusions are always based on this aspect ,but you have to remember that there are people out there such as myself who played the 2nd one (MegaDrive) yet ,they never played the original .
I was blown away back then by this game’s😲 *atmosphere* ,gore ,depression and pessimistic mood and totally loved it(*their music themes were also great & very unique ).
So ,since SplatterHouse 2 was (for myself) my first contact with the game I didn’t mind if it was similar to the (older)arcade as you say ,or if it was similar to the first one ,since I enjoyed what I saw and never cared to compare it with the previous ones.
Thus ,for me SplatterHouse 2 ,will always be a unique MegaDrive-experience in my memory.
Another great video! ❤🎉 Thank u, SLX!
Splatter house on the GENESIS is my favorite thing to play on Halloween 🎃
Absolutely love this game series, I remember playing the first in arcades then playing them on home consoles as a kid
I’m so glad you owned, gave a chance and liked the Turbografx16 then and pay homage to it today!!
Such an underrated system. Man I miss those days!
Splatterhouse 1 2 3 such great times the password in Splatterhouse 3 is the word Slayer backwards
Great video as always! Would love to see a review of Rampage on the Master System
My favorite channel, nuff said 😊
Wow, was not expecting this! I just played the original arcade machine just a few days ago!
22:26 truer words where never spoken
For me the second game was the sweet spot.
Thanks!
Splatterhouse 2's opening theme is one of my favorites. I jam to it regularly.
My best friend had a TurboGRAFX 16. So we argued all the time about which system was better. I remember going over to his house and playing Splatterhouse. And you won't believe this: I did not know that there was a version of Splatterhouse for the Sega Genesis. That's right. I did not know that we could resolve our favorite dispute right then and there by comparing two versions of this one game!
Splatterhouse 2 arguably has better graphics, especially running in a much larger window and featuring all those parallax/layering effects. However, it's a newer game, benefiting from twice the ROM space. Not a fair comparison.
Splatterhouse 3 and The Seventh Guest were the first games that genuinely scared me.
I was about 10 when i got my MD, and when it came to splatterhouse, i made the rookie error of assuming newest was best. I rented Splatterhouse 3, found it to be too clunky and i hated the timer, so i never tried 1 or 2.
Boy, talk about a mistake. 1 + 2 are much different style of games, easier to pick up and play for the younger crowd.
Great work, once again, SLX.
You're one of the few video game CZcamsrs i watch, because you keep it real and i can relate to your content, being a poor Sega kid growing up.
It took until MK and Doom to get people upset about violence and gore in video games. Meanwhile, Splatterhouse was doing it first before those two.
I recommend the Splatterhouse Doom mod
Love these games, too bad we never got a Sega CD Splatterhouse 3, with improved music and sound and a 2 player option!
Ah yes 400 bucks for a turboxpress in the navy back in 91. Worth every penny and of course it got lost when i left the ship. USS Shennandoah AD 44
Hunt that down! Also, thanks for your service.
Splatterhouse 3 is the GOAT.... the GOAT!!!
Love these compilation videos.
I really like the Splatterhouse series, still do! As a big fan of 1 &2, I was hyped up for the 3, especially when I heard it was adding beat'em up mechanics, and making it more non-linear. But I gotta say I was SO incredibly disappointed when I founded out about the Splatterhouse 3 had a timer! It's probably my biggest gaming pet peeve, especially when it's tied to the ending like it was. It took a game that I always wanted and kind of ruined it for me...
(Almost akin, to getting a beautiful filet mignon, but when you take your first bite, you learn it was seasoned with a season you really dislike. It's still an amazing steak and you can still enjoy it but with every bite it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth that prevents you from truly enjoying it, but that one little addition makes it go from "OMG! Perfection!" to "Eh, it's ok".)
I get that the developers wanted to instill a sense of urgency and panic by implementing it. But the thing about Splatterhouse that I really loved about it , was just soaking in everything, all the awesome monsters, the creepy setting & atmosphere, the disconcerting sound effects and music, and when you're rushing through everything to ensure you get the good ending, you don't really get time to appreciate all of it.
IMO, It really doesn't make any sense for a game to rewards players for finishing the game faster by skipping a lot of the content and taking the absolute shortest path possible. Especially not in a game like this. It's kind ironic that with that game where they make a point to say it's non-linear, that because of the timer there's really only one route to take to get the good ending. It makes a lot of rooms pointless and only exist to cost you time.
Once again, IMO I think the game would've been much better and better received if they threw out the timer, and instead tied the endings to certain goals, like how much of the house did you explore, if/how many times you died, or maybe finding certain items. It would've made for so much of better experience without changing too much of the game.
He will catch me next time he says, for six years now. Still not caught.
He he he he.
Sweet compilation. You mentioned the regional differences of Splatterhouse 2, but not 3. That would have been interesting.
As a kid having a turbo grafix 16 splatter house was my favorite. I played the hell out of that game. Being from CT and name dave . Namco must have been spying on my life lol thanks sega lord X ahh nostalgia
Nice seeing all three reviews put together. I'd be interested in seeing you take a look at Wanpaku Graffiti - Rob, West Mansion: The Splatterhouse Homepage
My uncle had Splatterhouse on the TG16 and four year old me couldn't bear to be in the same room when it was on. I was similarly scared of the Genesis games on top of the whole violent game outrage Mortal Kombat caused around the time 3 came out.
As I played them years later, I found the presentation and atmosphere of those games to be amazing and the narratives to be shockingly engaging.
In short, this series will always have a special place in my heart. I will gladly replay the games once a year.
Some of my favorite Easter games
Rick died for your sins and was resurrected on the third day by the Mask. 😆
IKR? So wholesome and inspiring.
Also, gooey.
@SegaLordX
I have NO idea how you beat this game in 30mins...more-or-less 10 for that matter. You need to memorize every single step and stage in order to conquer this beast. I might just suck at console gaming, but I have yet to complete this gem of a game.
Brent
I'm surprised they have not made this into a movie a streaming show
Ill give game sack sh.. about f16 falcon game. That game was always played as basic as a 3d flight sim it just was way better than its given credit for. Yes it sucks now even trying it for old times sake, but top notch back then.
Happy Easter
Love splatterhouse great video sega lord!
Been a huge fan since the TG-16 days. Its a shame the 2010 reboot failed but at least we got to see boobs with the unlockable puzzle pieces.
Snes drunk, AVGN, nostalgia critic and sega lord x are my go to, CZcams channels
Try Kim Justice.
AVGN. Eww.
As a long time follower of James when the plagiarism incident happened it really opened my eyes. James doesn't do anything other than read a script other people wrote from a teleprompter. He doesn't play the games (That's Mike and the new editor Sean). James isn't a gamer at all and doesn't care about gaming, he would rather try to pretend he's a rockstar in his crappy band. The real gamer always has been Mike Matei.
Then there's the fact that both Bootsy and Kyle (Guitar guy) want nothing to do with him anymore since James kind of screwed them over. Even the old show runner Kieran left after being stiffed on Pat by Screenwave. After reading James' autobiography I have realized just how much of a lolcow the guy is and there's a reason he has lost a lot of fans, including me.
There's so many more better gaming CZcamsrs who are small and don't try to sell you something every video. That's the only reason why the episodes exist, to serve ad reads. Do you like Soylent ?
At least SNESDrunk and SegaLordX care about gaming and give ACTUAL reviews of their games instead of just saying "Game Bad" and having juvenile jokes.
SPLATTERHOUSE RULES!!
Great video thank you
Great videos 🎉
6:19 thank goodness for emulation
I wonder if my brother sold his ps3 splatterhouse cause they had all three games to emulate on it. I honestly just like the first one in my opinion though but i should replay them
No Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti? 😅 Love the Splatterhouse games. Wish Namco would release a modern compilation with the arcade original, the PCE and TG16 versions, the Japanese and US versions of 2 and 3, Graffiti, and the 360/PS3 game.
Also, I really miss GamePro...
Good reviews! I only played the first one as a kid, but I remember it being fun and fairly creepy. It is a shame the setting of the third game sounds pretty lackluster. These games still sound fun! I kind of wish they would do a remaster of this trilogy. Though, I heard the remake that came out years ago was kind of mixed bag.
As much as I enjoyed Splatterhouse 3, for years I legit thought that the stage 1 time limit was literally impossible, a cruel joke by the designers to toy with us that Jennifer could be saved. I eventually beat the game but never came close to a good ending.
Honestly 3 is by far my fav, since it's the one I grew up playing. It also feels a lot more fleshed out (so to speak) in terms of story and gameplay. It is hard as fuck though, and that last boss is straight up brutal.
Really wish this series would make a return with modernized retro 2D graphics, and get Stephan Weyte to voice the Mask.
Is there any difference between arcade archives switch version and Namco museum on switch thanks for video showing this game can't believe didn't know about this game or play it looking forward to playing it 😊
I still like all the bosses in Splatterhouse 2 &3
What did you think about the 2010 remake?
This game is classic and Sega is the best console👍.
I really wish they released splatterhouse 1 on SEGA Genesis 😭at least I hope someone could make this project of porting it on SEGA Genesis
I am sure that they could make a perfect port these days (just look at Mega R-Type or Shinobi MD) but why bother? Unfortunately, these projects almost never get completed either. Would've been awesome back in the day though, alone with Rastan port (instead of that travesty of a sequel).
The first time I saw a Genesis it was someone playing Splatterhouse 2 on it. I was at the babysitters and her son was playing the game, all I had known up to that point was the NES. I was young but it opened my eyes to the wider scope of the gaming landscape. That and then Sonic was what pushed me to ask for a Genesis.
I remember renting this game but part two or three it was and playing it in my bed room standing on my bed playing on my woodgrain crt being scared went to look for my mom I got freaked out
We can save her rick
Awesomeness video please do more thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Existe uma versão do NES que foi lançado apenas no Japão. É incrível 🧟
I loved Splatterhouse because there was no other game like it. I'm still not sure how they even got away with it.
Turrican was one we all could beat. Splatterhouse when youre onboard ship we all could beat it. Sad i never played the others. There was a game called doom came out.
And then... the "attempt" of bringing these series back happened. There was an opportunity, it somehow got screwed.
🎉
Splatterhouse 3 beats all them Splatterhouse games
Just in time for Halloween? Did they move Halloween to march?
Maybe he confused Easter for Halloween
@@GalagaForever this is a compilation of older reviews. I believe that the Splatterhouse 3 review was done around Halloween.
@@warchild9381 I know, was replying to someone else was making a little joke since it is Easter today (3/31/2024)
👍👍👍
As i look back its probably a shipmate stole it lol.
so..... its Dante's Inferno on Genesis.
I thought you were a bit too critical on Splatterhouse 2 and 3. I have played Splatterhouse 1 and now has done a commendable job on the sequels wrt to GFX and gameplay improvements.
The improvements were derivative but Splatterhoue 1 was stuck in between 8 bit and 16 bit hell, the sequels broke the ceiling and reached new highs.
Vocal samples was never strong on the Genesis, whereas the SNES was always, for the most part, alot more cleaner.
how do I turn off the music pls?
Game room tour? 😊
I want a RE game on sega genesis
jennifer really was in a whack ass crystal prison
Lil kid me thought this was the friday rhe 13th game for 16bit machines

Im surprise they didn't get sued. Looks like jason to me. They didn't use the name that's why im thinking
U never did a video on Chakan The Forever Man 😅
