Legendary actor Willem Dafoe has been in over 100 films, but does he remember some of his most iconic lines from them? bit.ly/VarietySubscribe / variety / variety / variety
His passion for cinema / acting is beautiful. He seems like a nice person, but...what on earth do we know? He's human. If he were a bit prickly here or said things you don't agree with ( Politics / Religion ), would you conclude he's not a nice person? ( Sorry. Tired of Cult of Personality stuff. Respecting his artistry and loving DeFoe as a fellow human being is cool. Any whiff of elevating him as a god is not cool. Maybe you weren't doing so. )
Over one hundred movies, and he still lights up like a child when discussing his roles. You can tell that he has never fallen out of love with acting. This is why he continues to give great performance after great performance. I would love to see Willem Dafoe do Hot Ones.
Can't believe Academy snubbed him again for "Poor Things" after snubbing him for "The Lighthouse". The man deserves all the recognition, what an incredible career.
The fact that he not only knows where the lines are from but has a detailed story to go with it just shows how connected he is with his work. He's extraordinary. What an absolutely fascinating man to have a conversation with.
Actors like Willam don’t need stuffy awards to be great. He clearly takes so much pride in his career which speaks volumes to his drive and talent as an actor
I always get the feeling that Willem Dafoe is one of those actors who are very aware how lucky they are to be able to do what they love, for a living; and have decided to get as much enjoyment as possible out of it. There never seems to be any real awkwardness to him when he discusses his movies - there's just joy.
I love that Willem stands by his role in Speed 2. Hearing him love his own characters makes me love them more. WD is an absolute treasure to the world.
My heart hurt a little when he missed the Boondocks Saints quote, but admittedly that line was surrounded by far more quality quotes. Had he read the line directly after, done deal. This was a joy to watch.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 The phrase "protect him" is a colloquialism used in today's American English language parlance that indicates a desire to cherish an individual who brings a uniquely positive influence to the world around him. Not only that but his and his fellow crew mates character names. I’ve seen Platoon a couple times but there’s no way I’d be able to tell you any of their character names. But for him to do it decades later is amazing.
You have to have a GREAT memory to be a top-notch actor. I always wanted to be one, but my short term memory is horrible, and I would always either forget my lines or have to think about what I was saying so much that it didn't come out naturally.
Oh my gosh, first time I see any interview with this actor, and I must admit so I only had his impression as of the characters he had played, often villains. Here when I see his smile, I see he smiles with his entire face, eyes and face. Such a warm charming gentle personality it seems. I love this.
Willem Dafoe has one of the absolute coolest voices of any actor I have ever heard. It is so utterly unique. A raspy, but still warm sound that can be either menacing or soothing depending upon how he uses his instrument.
It's wild. Grew up within 50 miles of where he did (much younger), and have never heard anyone speak like him, no matter the age. You can tell he crafted this voice and timbre like a woodworker widdles away the wood to build something beautiful.
Mabe he is an actor cares about his craft..? The best of them don't realize how good they really are and don't become a narcissist along the way.. passion
his range of characters he can play is truly incredible when you contrast some of them with his personality. He can be a psychotic villain but in real life he seems so down to earth, kind and genuine.
A lot of actors seem to have a sort of "the work in the past is in the past" view to their work, which is fair enough - on to new things and such - but I love that Willem seems to have such joy in his work. He just seems to always have a smile going.
I love the fact that after like 30 years of sorta being a character actor and probably not getting the recognition he deserved, he’s finally go to that keanu point where he’s just beloved by every generation in whatever he’s in.
You gotta love Willem Dafoe. Such a strange actor who *really* stands out even in Hollywood, who can look downright crazy, and yet he's so down to earth and nice. He's one of those rare famous actors who I'd love to meet - really not interested in meeting 99% of them.
Yeah, he is probably one of the 5 actors that ALWAYS stands out in movies he is in without ever trying, for better or worse. Definitely one of the few I would love to meet and get an autograph.
Any time a Willem Dafoe interview comes across my feed, I always get sucked into watching the whole thing. He's just so charismatic and is just so enthusiastic about his work.
This is my first time, I never knew much about Dafoe as I try to separate actors personal from their careers. So many people hate movies because they disagree with an actor, sometimes we get lucky though. The one behind the screen would be the opposite of “never meet your heroes”
DaFoe is a character for sure. He loves what he does, he doesn’t hide his enthusiasm for acting and telling stories. I have a lot of respect for him, he seems pretty genuine and a joy to work with.
Willem Dafoe always looks like a very pleasant interviewee. The way his face lights up when he gets a good question or relives a particularly interesting memory is just so darn nice.
Ever since Platoon and Deer Hunter I made sure to never miss a Dafoe flick. Real Brilliance. I have a group of 3 friends that saw boondock saints when it came out and all these years later we still joke around using his lines from that movie. Real legend. Thanks for all your work.
What a wonderfully appealing person. Willem Dafoe ages beautifully and his work continues to have exceptional quality. I doubt there will ever be a better Norman Osbourne/Green Goblin.
If the purpose of an interview is to get at the inner essence of the artist, then this approach succeeded. It really opens Dafoe up to talk freely. I love the obvious adoration he has for his wife. I like how he knows the meanings of his films. Love the humbleness and the sense of humor and joie de vivre he has.
How is a guy who's delivered so many unnerving performances and a total legend so down-to-Earth in his own and, to top it all off, a joy to converse with?
I guess he just loves being an actor and creating movies. And I mean for the love of acting and of movies but not for the associated fame, status and money.
Aside from loving Mr. Dafoe's work and this lighthearted video, I'm obsessed with his sweater. The rich colour and the quality of the fabric. Just beautiful.
I don't remember ever seeing an interview with him. Bizarre. He's quite different from what i would have expected. Delightful. He's a 'bright shiny guy' who plays a lot of dark characters. I love it.
had a strange dream about a month ago, filled with clips and bit from various video games. The end of the dream was where I was brought to the office of bad guy (Dafoe), a business mogul, but the me in the dream was very scared. He sat behind a desk with an inhaler in front of him. He was telling me that he asked me to come in so that he could discuss my behaviour. Someone out of sight on my right whispered "Does he need the inhaler to be fast?" I whispered back "No, but he does it anyway". Dafoe's stops talking and freezes for a second, then he slowly picks up the inhaler and uses it. He blinks and then the revolver is pressed against my forehead without him apparently moving. "The trial period is over." There is the sound of a shot and I wake up sweating and shaking. Dafoe up close as a gangster type villain can be frightening.
One of my favorite quotes is attributed to him. Allegedly when asked about playing a hero vs. playing a villain he said "Good guys, bad guys--it doesn't matter. Everybody thinks they're righteous."

I love how he talks about his role in Finding Nemo with such love and talked about the process of finding Gil's voice. He truly never phones in a performance. Some actors I find belittle voice acting sometimes, or not giving it their best efforts
A lot of that is the pay. In live-action filming, you're paying for a famous face. Voice acting is worth considerably less because the famous face is never seen.
Such an extremely talented man! I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago when I was working at a mall in Maine. He spoke to me for about 25 minutes and was so gracious and kind.
I do believe he would've took that role to unbelievable places, I think there is still time to play the Joker but if the character pops up in a more mature role as age is the issue but could he play the joker when he's old in any point of a Batman story, absolutely. But your point is that nail on the head he would've been absolutely fabulous in that role.
I finally watched Platoon a couple months ago and it's now in my top 5. Mainly because of the duality of the Sgt Elias character and Sgt Barnes characters
Thank you so much for doing this video! And thank you to me for clicking on it - because I don't always click on CZcams recommendations 😃 He said "I could do this all day" - well, I could watch it all day. What a lovely concept. I hope there's more of it. And what a great person, not only a great actor. This makes me fall in love with him and with movies in general even more. Also, it makes me want to discover his whole work. Very well done!
The way that he went into the character of Gil from Finding Nemo like it was a live action character, really shows his dedication to the craft. One of my favorite actors.
He reminds me of the old men you get sitting at cafés in rural France. His face, his body language, his personality. He just feels like the living embodiment of the saying "I'm a lover, not a fighter".
It's absolutely criminal that Willem Dafoe of all actors hasn't gotten an Oscar yet. God only knows he deserves it for all the work he's put into these films.
@@SlurpyPie Isn't we the viewers indomitable love for him and his roles and our unending appreciation the best award an actor could ever receive? He is a legendary actor, and unlike those Hollywood bred pedos worth his salt.
What a lovely soul! I always felt a certain respect and admire for Willem but seeing him being so real and down to earth in this video made me appreciate him even more. The world needs more people like him to make it a better place.
His face tells soo much.. not a single frown line but his face is well-defined from a lifetime of smiling.. It’s such a wonderful attribute to a man who seems to be wonderful to his core.
He’s so well spoken, calm and relaxed as he lights up with every personal story he tells. What a beautiful array of versatility in his work, he can play any role and it becomes his own. Love his stories!
One of the greatest. If he's in your movie, the film instantly gets better. Also, what a wholesome guy he is. It's a joy to just watch him talk and how much he loves his craft.
One of my favorites roles of his is of the manager from The Florida Project. He was so real and relatable in that situation, very impressive performance.
I got to admit I love Willem's raw honesty and how he describes the roles. It's really refreshing to hear and understand an actor's perspective on their roles.
In my opinion I think Willem Dafoe is up there with the best of them. You can tell he has true and real passion for what he does just hearing him talk. Just a solid dude who deserves all the praise in the world.
Willem Dafoe really is one of the best actors in the world. And his memory! He's been in so many movies and only missed two! I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday and this guy remembers small lines from 30-40 years ago! Holy $hit! I really have to have a Dafoe marathon now!
Outside of being a most wonderful actor, I think the thing that I appreciate about him the most is seeing his absolute joy in performing. Regardless of the role it's a contagious enthusiasm for loving truly loving what he does.
What a gorgeous intoxicating person. His range of work over decades has always been fantastic and compelling. I love actors who seek purpose and curiosity in a vast spectrum of storytelling.
What a gentleman and a humble human, at no time was it a name drop or humble brag...could listen to Willlem all day talk about anything. Love to meet him, shake his hand and thank him for all the entertainment over the years.
I could quite happilly listen to this man over and over ... what a brilliant intelligent articulate man....how many actors are able to speak like this ! Bravo mr Dafoe ..loved the video!!!
One of the few actors' voices that are just so warming... that I could just listen to and enjoy. He is for me on the same level as Attenborough, Morgan Freeman, and James Earl Jones.
He's the very definition of an actor, not (just) an entertainer. What a genuine and humble man. He's passionate about his artistry, about the material he's working with and it shines through via his whole personality. He deserves the highest respect and admiration.

Genuine passion. I've always loved Willem Dafoe. One of the greats!
I finally watched Platoon a couple months ago and it's now in my top 5. Mainly because of the duality of the Sgt Elias character and Sgt Barnes characters
This man is amazing. Never phoned in a performance, speaks positively about every role, just an immense talent and a chill dude.
We know from that one video he's hung like a pony. He's got that BDE.
I'm glad he was able to get past killing that man in Zurich. I'm not convinced he did it but even if he did, we all make mistakes.
@@kingswing00what?
@@Eclecktro yep. We agree. I was in disbelief too.
Dafoe is so humble you wouldnt know he has one of the greatest acting careers of all time
Thank you so much for doing this video! And thank you to me for clicking on it - because I don't always click on CZcams recommendations 😃
He said "I could do this all day" - well, I could watch it all day. What a lovely concept. I hope there's more of it.
And what a great person, not only a great actor. This makes me fall in love with him and with movies in general even more. Also, it makes me want to discover his whole work. Very well done!
His haircut looks fabulous. Kudos to the stylist or most amazing bedhead ive ever seen.
Well with a name like Dafoe...French feels accurate to me...I'd guess French ancestry
Been a fan of his since Boondock, I just love it when he turns it on. And he turns it on every. Single. Time.
Boondock Saints was, in my opinion, Dafoe's best performance. Such a great film.
3:28 Willem Dafoe knows the memes!
It's absolutely criminal that Willem Dafoe of all actors hasn't gotten an Oscar yet. God only knows he deserves it for all the work he's put into these films.
The Oscars are such trash that I’d consider it an insult to be nominated ;)
@@lyingcat9022 I mean it is true that the Oscars are basically trash no doubt but still Willem deserves an award of some kind for his work.
@@SlurpyPie Isn't we the viewers indomitable love for him and his roles and our unending appreciation the best award an actor could ever receive?
He is a legendary actor, and unlike those Hollywood bred pedos worth his salt.
@@SlurpyPie he has won tons of awards. a quick google would tell you that lol
What a lovely soul! I always felt a certain respect and admire for Willem but seeing him being so real and down to earth in this video made me appreciate him even more. The world needs more people like him to make it a better place.
*Such a brilliant, kind and caring man and seems to truly enjoy the simple intricacies of filmmaking and life.🙏🏼*
Dafoe is one of my top 5 favourite humans. Nothing but humility, class, hard work and brilliance. Oh and he's funny af too.
Ranking humans cracks me up 🤣
He’s definitely up there in terms of classiness. Such a sincere human being. Love everything he’s ever done.
He has that kind of smile that just forces itself onto you, and nobody can do anything about it.
His face tells soo much.. not a single frown line but his face is well-defined from a lifetime of smiling..
It’s such a wonderful attribute to a man who seems to be wonderful to his core.
This just randomly played after I was watching something, and it's the most amazing thing I've seen in quite some time. What a beautiful human!
“ there was a firefight!!!!” Priceless
He’s so well spoken, calm and relaxed as he lights up with every personal story he tells. What a beautiful array of versatility in his work, he can play any role and it becomes his own. Love his stories!
This man is so charming, can't help but smile as he talks about all these experiences. Whenever he is in a movie you know it'll be something special.
Charisma level: 100+
His energy is so wholesome
One of the greatest. If he's in your movie, the film instantly gets better. Also, what a wholesome guy he is.
It's a joy to just watch him talk and how much he loves his craft.
One of my favorites roles of his is of the manager from The Florida Project. He was so real and relatable in that situation, very impressive performance.
You do it all day and I'll watch and listen all day.
I just love that You let the actors talk briefly about whatever it is. And I love that he has genuine thoughtful answers.
Dang I didn't expect him to seem so happy and wholesome. A smile and laugh goes a long ways.
Loved this frank and wonderful snapshot of the man behind so many wonderful performances. Class. Pure class.
Willem Dafoe is such a delight to listen to and watch be interviewed. He has such a great personality, a hidden gem for sure.
Willem Dafoe really is one of the best actors in the world. And his memory! He's been in so many movies and only missed two! I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday and this guy remembers small lines from 30-40 years ago! Holy $hit!
I really have to have a Dafoe marathon now!
I could listen to this man talk about his career and movies all day long. An absolute joy.
I like how he stood by his crazy Speed 2 performance.
A line from his work with David Lynch would have been nice. As his part in Wild at heart was just mesmerizing.
I appreciate Dafoe a lot , Great actor , great personality...one of my favorites - thanx
He should narrate audio books
One of the few actors' voices that are just so warming... that I could just listen to and enjoy. He is for me on the same level as Attenborough, Morgan Freeman, and James Earl Jones.
Willemstad Defoe is just awesome! From platoon to Spider-Man to John Wick
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Willem Dafoe speak outside of a movie before. He seems like a great guy. Someone interesting to talk to
He's the very definition of an actor, not (just) an entertainer. What a genuine and humble man. He's passionate about his artistry, about the material he's working with and it shines through via his whole personality. He deserves the highest respect and admiration.
