[Tandem Georgia Ep.8] There's a massive population of stray dogs in Georgia. The majority of the time they're as friendly as anything, simply in search of food. But occasionally we'd encounter some that, upon spotting us ride by, would stop what they were doing and take chase!

I do same as you, stopping and talking with them a little. They are not actually angry, just following their taming and guarding instincts.

I bet it’s bad rim tape which leads to repeated punctures.
Here in the states I use dog repellent. It's sort of like pepper spray, but it's designed to wear off more quickly, to be less harmful to the dog. Most dogs are just curious though, and I don't need to spray them. Just slow down, say hello, and "good doggy. Go home," but there are a few absolute psycho dogs that are intent on biting. I blame the owners for being neglectful, abusive, or outwardly encouraging them to attack.
Hmm, the problem is you don’t know whether a fast moving barking gnashing dog will bite unless you give it the opportunity to do so! I think quite a few dogs are drawn to revolving wheels and bite at them/you. I prefer to pedal away as quickly as possible.
Yeah, I did the same as you, i.e. talk nicely to them as if they’re my own pets and they won’t harm you at all.
These aren’t really pet dogs though, they are intended as guardians, so they are performing their duties as intended.
i cycle here in thailand, heaps of dogs everywhere.
mostly day trips...i find it best to ride in the hot part of the day, dogs are all having siestas in the shade.
but when dogs show up and seem angry, best to slow right down or stop...most dogs will do the same.
i got bit in the calf last year...kind of got ambushed from behind and tried to outrun him, sadly i didn't and it was rabies shots for me.
worst part is entering a town on a bike and right away a dog starts barking. he alerts other dogs down the street who in turn alert more dogs further down the road and you have to run a gauntlet of excited dogs. not fun.
My method with dogs is to just stop and let them investigate me. They’re curious to know who I am, and have never ever encountered an aggressive dog! I think of them as excitable kids happy to see a new face.

In Romania, we are used to deal with dogs on the road, in the villages or close to the sheep herds. The dogs in the last case are pretty persuasive. Stoping is the good thing to do in most cases, and giving orders with very firm voice (in any language). I use often an ultrasound cheap device for repelling the dogs. It usually works efficiently, except the old dogs (they are nearly deaf).
Dogs are great but can be a headache sometimes! Btw, if you're riding you should get an nta helmet like xnito or bern hudson, cpsc helmets aren't really safe

I do find that riding a recumbent Trike I am not so easy to bite. I think the wheels around me put's them off for fear of being run over

The thing you called puncture can happen when the tube gets accidentally stuck between the rim and the outer tire. Then when you inflate there is a lot of pressure and in riding a lot of wear; then after some time it springs a leak.

My method with angry dogs is to stop the bike and pretend to pickup a stone and hold my hand high in the air. It works all the time. The dog runs away.
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly I can accelerate, despite being 98% spent physically, when I discover a dog, teeth gnashing and snarling, gaining on my bike! Thx for the great videos & taking us on your tour.

Beautiful but peppered with bitter sweet.
Most dogs I have encountered, run away if you stop and try and pet them. Some keep barking so I just keep going and then there are those that don't slow down and start to bite, I keep a knife and stab them. They usually yell and then run away. Not my intention to harm them but some want to kill you so I would have no issues killing them.

You can fill a kid’s plastic squirt gun with salt water and spray it in the dog’s face 🐶. That works well and doesn’t harm the dog. There was some beautiful scenery in this video. 👍☮️🌞🚴🚴♀️❤️

I tried using a personal safety device to stab a dog from my keychain once. I told my friend , he suggested mace. I missed first time but dog backed off. Then 2 days later he came at me and I was ready, got him right in the face. " Chili dog" lol
We would need so many more drone shots from your insane adventures, but I guess, you needed to be very ressourceful with the batteries on this one.........
If a dog gets too aggressive I just tell it to fuck off. But mostly you just keep cycling.
the dogs probably reacted to the ultrasonic sound of tires
tires make a high/low pitched sound which dogs can hear and that startles them

The best way to stop dogs chasing you, is to stop ride. if you ignore them, one of them one day will bite you for sure. I have been in Georgia many times with my bicycle, and knows all the roads you have ride there and many more. In the beginning of my trips in Georgia I ignored the dogs that barking and chasing me, Till one day one Georgian shepherd (50 kg) tasted my right thigh. 2cm depth in my muscle....
Dogs, crossing the U.S. I kept a small pepper spray in my pocket. Spray toward them and they stop immediately.
Bear Spray.. light em up!

I did get attacked by a fox in the same way though 😂
That close yell really strongly "You go home", they'll circle a bit and try again yell again looking at them usually that's it, a dog that wasn't trained to attack is getting out-of-territory by 2 tries will turn around having protected house & home.

You see in some shots he has a GoPro mounted on a long arm up and away from his handlebars. It's either that and/or the effects of a 360° shot...errr I must've imagined an entirely different thumbnail (I'm sleep deprived levels of tired), as I just checked the channel vids list before posting and that looks like a bit of illustrative after effects, with both the motion blur of the bike, dog and landscape and the dog itself photoshopped into the picture. I've just now noticed your emoji and have realised you were probably joking and didn't need me to explain your joke for you!😳😵💫

The Lake Tahoe - Pyramid Lake bikeway is awesome until you get onto the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The resident's dogs are out of control. Just stay away
I've been running in Greece and Portugal and had some scary encounters with dogs. Shouting NO! seems to sometimes work but I am also considering a dog-spray. At least on the bike you can put the bike between you and the dogs, but on foot I feel a bit more exposed. And someone running is more normal to chase! Eeek!

I found a riding crop for horses in the road once while riding. It's a fairly terrible practice for horse riding and only abusive cowards really use them. However, keeping it in the straps of my frame bag saved me once from a big dog. I was riding alone, the dog came tearing out of a yard with it's owner casually walking behind it and quietly calling for the dog to come back. The dog slammed into my leg and the side of my bike, bit my pocket, and knocked me over. I managed to get to the other side of my bike from the dog and pulled the crop put. I called out, "can you help?!" The owner said it was fine and he was just playing. My torn pocket and scratched up leg said otherwise. Finally after 5 seconds of manic barking, growling and the dog trying to jump over my bike all while the dog's owner waddled over slowly I swatted the dog on the nose. It looked stunned and ran behind its owner. The owner then started actually yelling loudly at me for the encounter.
The owners of dangerous dogs are almost always to blame.
I rode away with the idiot still screaming.
