- This is a bizarre operating system. It's not Windows... But it looks like it. This is Wubuntu. In this video, I show the similarities between this and Windows 11 and how to install it - even if only on a Virtual Machine.
This video wasn't sponsored or anything... This is just interesting enough to share.
There is a lot of negative around Wubuntu, and the company behind it. Do not install this for anything other than curiosity, and keep it in a VM only.

Very interesting video! I suggest scripting what you'll say ahead of time though, as this was extremely repetitive.
as someone who wants to move to linux, i think if linux was sold like this, it might be a lot easier for people like me to make the move, but so long as it all works out of the box.
but linux really needs more support for more people to want to adopt using it.
however i suppose this could also be used to trick consumers into purchasing a product that looks like windows but when they actually get the PC, they find out real soon that it's a fraud.
i would like that linux worked more like windows in some more features, not just a skin slapped on top.
i would mostly be using my linux machine to play games, but i also love modding my games, and i hear that linux is not very easy to deal with when it comes to modding, something about the file structure is all wrong.

Does it run .EXE files natively without WINE or any other third party app?
Me: Can I have Windows 11?
No. We have Windows 11 at home.
Windows 11 at home:
Impressed by how well this was themed, a typical person would probably not be able to tell it's not Windows
I can
For a end-user, it is indeed very similar
Two things would set it apart from Windows... 1) Does it remember the last location of application windows when you reopen them? and 2) Does it run complex software like Photoshop, Premiere, Maya, and older versions of MS Word and Excel? If it can pass those tests, I'm in.
I'm so sick of Windows 10 spontaneously changing my theme... among other annoyances.
@@rontarrantI believe with Bottle (Wine but Easy) you can run Photoshop and old Office like Office 2007 but it is a little bit of a hassle to setup and may or may not work perfectly
As a typical person, I tried multiple times to install a childhood game (HoMM3: Complete) from the installer executable and a Wine thing poped up telling me it needs to install Gecko. I clicked to install and then after a while it gave the exact same message. I gave it 3 attemps before I figured it won't work. Not sure how they installed Wine on it or how turning it into an ISO affected it, but the free version didn't work.
More than that, I could install the said game and play it on Mint after installing Wine. It was a community patch (WoG 3.58) I tried to install and Wine refused to display anything from it.
I don't mean to be picky, but any end user who plays games outside a game launcher could tell the difference between any Linux distro and any Windows.

I'm not sure if this is a reference to the old Lindows or not. Microsoft basically sued them out of existence, so I assume if the creators were aware A: The name has been used already and might lead to some confusion, and B: would probably be avoided so they don't suffer the same fate.
@@TheGodOfAllThatWas I mean, that's not really true. Court ruled the name Lindows was fair game, so Microsoft _bought_ the Lindows trademark from them.
@@captainpumpkinhead1512Also technically pinning the downfall on MS is a little questionable on my part since they survived for a bit afterward and basically started flat packs. But their "thing" was windows compatibility (pre configured wine) and they lost the name then decided not to pursue that avenue. I liked lindows, but at that point I was left wondering "what's the point?" Which I assume (based on their path to non existence) was the general consensus.
Remember we'll always have these versions of Windows/Mac availabel on Linux. These distros are great for some people, family members (grandma, grandpa) that are use to the look of one particular system, but you can keep the freedom of open source and security.

This is Linuxfx under a rebrand. And it's pretty easy to crack, due to the fact it is Kubuntu with some modifications, and if Kubuntu is free, some modifications make no sense like the added DRM, it violates the GPL. It is already open-source because it being based on Kubuntu.
Based on the boot selector and install application of the ISO, it's more likely KDE Neon, though I haven't used Kubuntu in a long time, maybe they're more similar now
As long as the source code is available it doesn't break the GPL. You can still charge for a software when it's under the GPL.
Many Linux distros include proprietary video drivers. As long as the source code is available in the project then I don't see a GPL violation. Making changes to code like Kubuntu is the whole point of open source right? New distros are born of branches that may turn into a new project/distro.
@@SuperFranzs I actually prefer to pay for software, as you generally get more in the way of support and a company behind a product, rather than a few egos who don't really care.
This looks a lot better than the Windows XP theme for Linux I tried years ago
Watching this made me realize that I don't really know what Windows looks like anymore. The standard KDE Plasma desktop is more familiar to me than Windows 11.
The only good thing about Windows, is its software compatibility and the bad thing about it is the almost uncustomizable boring look, and the paid stuff. By installing a Windows theme on Linux, you are just combining the bads of both OSes.
Why do you think all Linux software should be free? There's no reason people shouldn't create and sell proprietary software for Linux or any other OS. The Linux KERNEL is free, beyond that there is no requirement for anything to be FOSS. Programmers need to earn a living too. The Linux world doesn't just consist of amateur programmers doing it for fun... there's big money involved with the creation and maintenance of some major distros. 🙄 Windows' compatability with old software is not to be underestimated, it's a huge boon for users. By and large, Windows is a damn site easier to use and has better quality drivers. There are too many different Linux distros out there, many appear and disappear without a trace. Distros have inconsistent user interfaces, tools, software managers and repositories etc... it's a big mess.

I have to say, after reading all of these comments, that every Linux lover expects everyone else to switch to Linux, or they are just a bunch of idiots. You look down on them, like you are something special. But then when something like this comes out and may actually get some Windows users to take a look at Linux, you throw more insults at them for liking it. Everywhere you look, Linux users talk about how the Linux community will be so eager to help new people learn Linux, but what I see the most is insults, fat heads and a community of people who think they are better than everyone else. Is this the kind of community you want people to join? If this is what the Linux community is like then maybe you are the reason people are sticking with Windows.
Thanks, you found better words than me to explain what I always wanted to say, just because english is a foreign language to me and often I can't find the right words.
I love Windows and also have no other choice. There's no driver for VR-headsets, no drivers for my wheel to have fun in Sim Racing games, no drivers for my high end soundcard, no drivers for my PCIe NVME-Storage-Card, no HDR support for my monitor, and so on.
Linux is like Apple an OS for a different purpose. Windows is especially made for easy use and gamers.
I can't even imagine to tell my mother how to install a browser in Linux or a cardreader to use her bank account online. It's already difficult enough in Windows ;-)
To all Linux-Fanboys: Please tolerate us Windows users like we tolerate Linux users. It's the same with Playstation and X-Box! Why?
Just feel happy to found what you prefer and fits your likings the most. There's no reason to hate others just because they also found what they prefer and what fits them the most.

That's really cool. The only reason why I stick to windows is because VST plugins and their launchers are designed for windows. Also the new VB Audio Matrix is so much more intuitive than Jack Audio Router... If only VB was compatible with Linux..

Damn. This is Windows 11. Not that I think it's the greatest idea, but it's really pretty cool that it is possible. And, I love that Linux is integrating Windows / Microsoft capabilities into it.
I like how Plasma looks better than real Michaelsoft Binbows 11.
If only it weren't named "Windows," we could use this opportunity to install it on systems that will become obsolete once Windows 10 support ends. This could serve as a transitional strategy to familiarize people with Linux as they migrate from Windows 10 to a Linux-based system. It would be an excellent idea to create a skin for an operating system that closely mimics the one users are accustomed to. This way, when they transition from Windows 10 to Ubuntu, everything remains in a familiar layout and location. This approach minimizes the learning curve, as users would only need to adjust to minor differences, with no significant workaround required.
Is there a setting to make the window corners square?
How does it perform in heavy duty tasks compared to W11? Like editing, recording video and gaming at same time?
If everything works without issues, about the same as windows. Running windows executables on wine is not always 100% stable since some software just isn't stable to begin with and can be even worse under wine. Or an application might be using some undocumented api call that wine doesn't implement. YMMV
@@paxalotin In my case - anything from Adobe, games, some very specific professional programs (like LTspice, some CAD software), most DAWs (that are actually usable) and their VST plugins. Things like Reaper native Linux build don't count as it's totally unstable and buggy as are many games that run well on Proton and their Linux builds are a joke.
I gotta say, the list of things that don't have Linux build or is not usable under wine/proton is shrinking rapidly, but considering current practices of certain companies like Epic Games or Ubisoft for example, it may become worse, not better.
You keep referring to this OS as being "cursed" but this is EXACTLY your best chance for the LINUX community to start to pull in the hundreds of MILLIONS of Windows users out there. THIS is how you are going to do that, by making it EASY for them to switch over. The LINUX community needs to be LEADING with this this type of product/OS effort, not shying away from it!
well, yes and no. it's important to not have people believing they're actually running windows if they're not. windows apps working in Linux is definitely a good thing, for those who need it, but if someone is duped into thinking they're running windows and they're not, well that just creates problems down the line when all they ever try to install is windows apps. i've seen it many times on the Linux installs i've done for 'regular users', they have a downloads folder with multiple copies of a (Windows) software they can't install. it would be better if they understand what they're running.
Do you have a video discussing some reasons why we would want ubuntu or linux as an OS? I have been using windows my entire career. Never even had a chance to use any iOS. @captainpumpkinhead1512 I was trying to keep it relatively simple. I am not 100% sure on the exact details. What I remember is lindows won the 1st lawsuit. Microsoft then filed something stupid like 50 new suits in different jurisdictions (countries I think). In order to get them to drop the suits they changed the name. As part of dropping the name they got a bunch of cash from Microsoft and "sold" them the trademark. As I recall they stopped using the name before they transferred the trademark since they didn't want to hire lawyers in all the countries you could access their website from. That's kind of winning the battle but losing the war.

How long you'll wait will depend on how long Wine(the Windows-on-Linux "emulator") will take to match Windows' compatibility. Wine and this distro are completely unrelated, so this distro's team has nothing to do with Wine, but I digress. It's available on other Linux distros as well, so unless you have other reasons for using this distro aside from the compatibility, you might be better off using something else anyway.

Audacity windows version on linux? As an open source app doesn't it have a native linux version?
It does. It was a simple example of how you can install Windows apps. Many non technical users will download windows executables without knowledge there is an open source version they could install instead.
What would be next is if Wubuntu offered (and encouraged) to install a linux version where available.
Finally core Linux user can install Wubuntu and other skins familiar on there office's desktop
If this was stable enough then it would be good enough to recommend to people, but most themes like this fall apart when an update releases
This project reminds me of Linspire.
This concept is almost as old as Linux itself. Like in the 90's you had lots of "almost" MS Windows style desktops. Usually KDE for its amount of customization. Nowadays you can get themes based on OS/2 Warp, MacOS X, MacOS 9 (), MS Windows of just about every iteration (even going back to 3.x versions) etc.
From a usability point of view, and a support point of view, it's kind of a nightmare. The problem is that small differences create big frustrations because the user hasn't accepted that there's going to be a learning curve, if even just a gentle one. The expectation becomes if it looks and feels like the OS, it should operate in exactly the same way. This was quite prevalent in open/libre/star office. While functionally it had (still has) probably ALL of the features most people use in their office suite, it's still considered a cheap imitation. And it's because it's trying too hard to be MS Office. But small differences, such as "Page Setup" in MS Office being under File while the same functionality is found under Format as "Page Style" in Libre (et el) Office causes some frustration for the user.
Generally this sort of thing is kind of a curiosity but SHOULD NOT be viewed as a good way to introduce someone to Linux. From my own experience, having shifted my mother to Linux years ago, we focused on the things she wanted to do. i.e. This is how you open your browser. This is how you play videos. etc. She's happy if she can do the things she wants to and can ask me for anything else.
From my experience, you're spot on. KDE out of the box is close to Windows (which I think was always its intention). But I find that the familiarity hinders me, because I fall back into Windows expectations and ways of doing things. GNOME is different enough that it forces me to drop the muscle memory and do things differently.
Does solidworks work on this system?

My question is why in the world would they spend so much time skinning linux to look like windows 11, which so many people hate the new layout? I could understand making it look like 7 or 10, but 11? Maybe there's already distros that look like those? Maybe some people actually like the 11 look but don't have supported hardware? There's all kinds I guess.
But can it install and play Diablo IV, Runes of Magic, and Old dos games?
