    Story based games like this one is not just running around killing people, It is basically an interactive movie, where instead of actors move around and do stuff, you yourself move that actor and depending on your movements there are consequences that can change the flow of the story in some way (not all games but some games do change story depending on your choices). Some games are very well written with deep lore like novels.

      @@HannaHsOverInvested if you don't know, Akira Kurosawa is a Legendary Director that made Samurai movies in the 60's and 70's.
      his style has greatly influenced the 70's Western Spaghetti genre, the 7 Mercenaries are a direct adaptation from the 7 Samurais, and For a Fistfull of Dollars is inspired by Yojimbo.
      George Lucas, Himself was influenced by Kurosawa style when he made Star Wars.
      And the mandalorian series also has some inspirations of Kurosawa, (since the mandalorian is pretty much a Western in Space, and Modern Western movies where influenced by Kurosawa, wich He was also influenced by old school Western from the 40's and 50's, so the loop goes around in some way)
      And since most of Kurosawa where black and white movies, the Devs decided that they could NOT make a samurai game, and not pay Homage to Kurosawa, so they included the Kurosawa mode.

    I really like the angle of that American developers geeking out over Japanese history and culture get inspired to make Ghosts of Tsushima and Japanese developers geeking out over medieval European history and culture get inspired to make Dark Souls. Each with their own lens of the subject matter. "Cultural appropriation" is a thing of beauty that gives the world new experiences and insight.

    • @HannaHsOverInvested
      @HannaHsOverInvested  Před 3 lety +18

      I think there is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. And sometimes it is really hard to tell what that is. But in what you are describing, I think it is cultural appreciation.

    • @codex5928
      @codex5928 Před 3 lety +6

      @@HannaHsOverInvested Without a doubt the latter as they're giving due respects and paying homage as opposed to the appropriation aspect which is just more like assimilation than anything else. "I like this so it's mine now", ergo a white Valley girl wearing a Kimono just because "ooo cute". Being a Norse Pagan (given the OP's name they may relate; Son of Thor, Odinsson himself, AND Bjorn Ironside? Damn) in this modern age I've come to notice a lot of non-Scandinavian-lineaged people picking up the religion and has caused a bit of a rift devised from bigotry among some groups as some see it a form of cultural appropriation -- which it is _not_ -- however when some more militant groups try and alter and tarnish the history of said culture to try and demerit it and claim it was stolen from another group that _they_ happen to belong to would be appropriation.
      Also, it seems the finer details of semantics does interfere in some peoples understanding and perception of things for instance the debate of "equality" when most that speak of it are actually referring to equity. For instance an image perfectly explains this; three people of differing heights are at a fence watching a ballgame, two can not see over the fence and one can, if you give the two shorter people the same sized box one can now see over the fence yet the other cannot, that is equality -- equity would be giving person two a box to make them the same height as the taller person to see over the fence and the shorter person three an even larger box so all three are on the same level. People seem to mix up appropriation and appreciation in the same way, hence this random tirade.

      @@HannaHsOverInvested I think their explanation is a little weird. IIRC (I only beat the game once but have seen the other ending) it's one single storyline with two different endings based on choices made at the end. So if you watch someone play it, you can also watch the other ending afterwards. It's more that there are two different flavors of gameplay - open combat or stealth/subterfuge - and the core conflict is about "honor" and "dishonor." Namely, a strict Samurai notion of what is and is not honorable (though, as a side note, in reality the Samurai weren't actually all that focused on honor until centuries later, during a time of relative peace), and whether or not it's better to be "honorable" by their definition and lose, or be "dishonorable" and win and hopefully save your home.

    13:25 I think it's fine to appreciate small things like that transition. You just know that a lot of trouble went into making it go so smoothly. Even things like making sure you run from the correct shade blue to the correct shade of orange, to make it pleasing for the eyes. Filmmakers think about these things way more than people realize while watching.

  • @OrangeFreeman
    @OrangeFreeman Před 3 lety +16

    The "beach" thing is actually based on real historical events. There was a Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274 that started on Tsushima Island, you can read about it. Though it's based on true events, a lot of things were made up for artistic purposes. For example, 13th-century samurai didn't wear typical shogun armour and didn't charge into battle swinging their katanas, they didn't wear armour and preferred shooting with bows on a horseback. The samurai the way we used to see only started to look like that in the 17-18th century.
    If you would like to watch "that movie" you can try to watch Kurosawa samurai movies wich the game takes a lot of inspiration from (they literally have "Kurosawa" mode that turns picture into black and white). Fun fact, George Lucas also took inspiration from Kurosawa to create Jedis.

    Sakai Jin is the character. Written as 境井 仁 his name Jin (仁) uses the kanji for the word benevolence. In Japanese one name can have many different meanings depending on which kanji is chosen to write the name. In the Japanese language the family name always come before the given name and people will call others by their family names unless they are close friends at which point it is okay to call someone by their given name.

    Ghost of Tsushima is based on real historical events where the Mongols invaded Tsushima Island Japan in the 1200s.
    The protagonist Jin Sakai was orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle (the opening monolog guy). Jin was taught the way of samurai which is to fight with honor and respect. But when Jin sees the Mongols are exploiting the samurai's honorable way of war, he begins to abandon his samurai code, and starts to do whatever it takes to defend his home by assassinating and poisoning the enemies.
    That's why his uncle said "if you keep going down this path, you will be no better than the Mongols." And Jin's like "I am samurai, but I will sacrifice everything (including my honor) for my home."

  • @Sylvaard
    @Sylvaard Před 3 lety +2

    This has been one of the best story games i’ve ever played. About a protagonist who strays from the old way of thinking and adopts a more modern way of thinking in order to protect his people. Someone who is willing to sacrifice anything to save everyone, complete selflessness. As you can probably guess it’s an amazing story which challenges you to think about right and wrong. After the credits rolled in the game i was holding back tears. And the theme song sends shivers through my body. I know in years to come the music will bring strong nostalgia. I know you don’t play the games but after i play masterpieces as good as this i feel bad for all the people who don’t game because they are truly missing out. If u ever decide to start playing games. THIS game is a go to. And i know u said that this would be a great book but understand this: Story games, especially this game is best as a game and not a book or movie because you PLAY the character. In a way you are a part of each other and u feel the things he feels if you get what i mean. And it makes decision making all that more important. Games have a way of story telling that no book or movie can replicate.

    • @Sylvaard
      @Sylvaard Před 3 lety +1

      Also this game KIND of gives you decisions but ultimately forces u to become the ghost. Which may sound bad but this help the story even more because, like the main character, you constantly fight trying to do dishonourable things but in the end u HAVE to because the honourable thing (which in this game fighting the enemy head on is considered very honourable. killing people from the shadows is seen and disgusting and unfair even if the enemy are evil) won’t work because u are extremely outnumber. That is why jin is called “the ghost” because he is forced to take the dishonourable route. slaughtering the invaders from the shadow. one thing this game does great is. the longer u play as “the ghost” the word spreads around and the enemies hear of u and eventually become terrified. sometimes u won’t have to fight people because they r so scared of the stories of undefeatable ghost they just run and scream. One more thing. In real life, a large amount of the mongal forces were killed in a mysterious storm. as the game goes on there is a storm which hangs near the island. but it’s really the ghost that killed almost everyone. it’s sort of like a fictional “what really happened” type story.

    I haven’t actually played this game, but the overall history of the mongol invasions on Japan were sooooo interesting to me when I read about it. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I read it so long ago, but the mongols came in with massive armies, Bombs, and superior armor that the Japanese swords could not pierce. The Japanese had to up their game, creating better weaponry and using tactics like jumping onboard the mongol boats and silently massacring entire crews. Ultimately though the killing blow was dealt by bad weather, a typhoon hit the mongol fleet and they were decimated. The vessels they used were not fit for the sea. If I’ve got something wrong please correct me and if you find this interesting I implore you to research it further.

    • @Dezarc
      @Dezarc Před 3 lety +3

      and then the mongols went back and put together another fleet to try again, which may have been the largest attempted naval invasion in history until D-Day, and a second typhoon destroyed the fleet on their way to Japan; that's actually the origin of the term 'kamikaze', which translates to divine wind

Out of that, it is a wide open world with many places to visit, make photos, do some haikus (poetry), honor sanctuaries, help Jin's friends with their sidequests, help the innocent with some tasks, collect flowers to get some skins, etc. It is quite enjoyable to play in many aspects.
