    thanks, I live off grid in a very cold place, I'm looking into a sand battery, and wind turbine for power, making heat and hot water. I'm thinking 55 gallon drums of sand. there's just no information to be found. what is that heating element? I'm planning on a 12v element.

    • @Techboxreview
      @Techboxreview  Před 5 měsíci +2

      That heat element I used was a 12v 300watt water heat element. It would work better with a drum of water I reckon. The heat element would burn out to quickly in sand. Try heating water with a water heat element first and see how well it proforms.

      Thanks mate. Yeah very intresting concept indeed. U can use the heat to heat a small room or green house. Or you can use a thermal electric peltier to convert the heat back into 12volt electricity. Some bigger sand battery’s run steam turbines to produce power. Very cool low tech energy storage 👍

    • @Techboxreview
      @Techboxreview  Před 6 měsíci

      Hi mate I couldn’t answer that sorry. It all depends on how cold your area gets and many other variables. I would rather heat a bucked of water. I personally think the heat element would burn out a lot sooner in a sand battery. Another idea would be to use an aquarium tank with a fish tank heater. I hope this helps 👍

      First use a regular air heater. If you can find out how many watts the heater uses that'll be a a very helpful detail I could use to answer your question. Then I'll need you to tell me how long does the heater stay on before taking practice braids and also how long It takes it's braids breaks and I'll answer your question then. Because 1. I don't know where you're located so I need to know how cold it gets at night. 2. I don't know how well your green house preserves heat. Come back and tell me the results once your done.

    hey! it's a great simple set up. I just tried my own...with a 110 watt water heater from Home Depot...and it burned out pretty quickly. Is there a rule that'll keep the elements from burning out? Do I need to lower the voltage a bit? Maybe run on 48 volts or 24? I'm curious to know why no one on CZcams is burning out their elements. what do you think?

    • @Techboxreview
      @Techboxreview  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi mate. Are you just experimenting or you using it for heating purposes? .i think Although this does work and it is a simple to build. I think heating water with those water heat elements is more suited. I have seen some youtubers using PTC heat elements for sand heaters that seem to have a better resistance to heat. ( they will only get to a certain temperature from my understanding). You may need some sort of thermal switch or You could try lower lowering the voltage and see how it proforms.

    • @caretakerfochr3834
      @caretakerfochr3834 Před 7 dny +1

      Apparently water heater elements are not well regarded. A lot of people go with electric stove elements. expanded vertically to heat a larger area of sand. They will work on AC or DC and happily create heat with the only input being a solar panel.

      @hunterlovvorn5587 Před 2 měsíci +1

      He said the heating element was a 12v 300W device. That comes out to 25 amps of 12v power. Look for a 30+ amp or so 12v power supply and you should be good.
      Also, you’ll need thick wiring with a good amount of insulation since it’s both higher amps and in a hot, salty environment. Silicone insulation can take a decently high temp. There’s also specialty materials that may be more useful. Alternatively, you could put the element in like water heaters: from the outside. That way wiring is out of the sand

    First it's not a sand battery it's a TES Thermal Energy Store. Next that element you are using is meant as a water immersion heater and has been constructed to withstand at max around 100 degrees Celsius on the terminal flange and the cables you are using are not rated for a temperature even that high. But you have them inside the storage space and subjected to the full heat of the sand. This gives people the wrong idea about how to achieve a home built unit. No thermal insulation, abusing the heating element and no output arrangement. what was the point of your video. We could all easily have imagined that the sand would get hot without watching you do it. Sorry to pour cold water on it, hope it didn't short it out.
