- Willie Nelson wrote this song in 1961. Crazy.
He is one of the world's most under-rated guitarists, a jazz-loving Texan cowboy drawing influences from over 60 years of playing with artists from all genres and eras. Nothing is off limits to Willie, and his back catalog has to be one of the biggest around. From Wynton Marsalis to Johnny Cash, Pink to Snoop Dogg, you gotta love this man's love for music.
Influenced heavily by Django Reinhardt, he uses surprising jazz chord voicings and runs amongst the typical "cowboy chords" found everywhere in country music.
This is from his great acoustic performance for the VH1 Storytellers series that he did with Johnny Cash (he also did great duets with Merle Haggard!), and I've transcribed his fills and chords faithfully from that performance. ( • Johnny Cash & Willie N... )

Willie Nelson + Jazz Chords...down another rabbit hole THANKS!
It's a very interesting hole, my friend...
Great lesson. Thanks. A real fun one to play.
Cheers Ian. I think there’ll be more WN songs here in the future!
@@OneChartguitarlessons Thanks. Just in case you missed it here's the great Tom Bukovac talking about playing guitar in the backing band for Willie's 90th birthday bash in LA: czcams.com/video/v5gbt8D0Jbs/video.html
Great! Thanks. I will check that out.
Whow. Brilliant Lesson Matt . Great work . I like the Jazz type chords and single note runs.
Thanks Andrew. Yeah they’re really tasteful and not super difficult either!
