- So, how are canal lock gates made? We find out at the Canal & River Trust Stanley Ferry Workshop.
They hold back thousands of gallons of water and control height on the canal network, but how are canal lock gates made?
They've been making lock gates at the Canal and River Trust's Stanley Ferry workshop for many years. Enjoy this episode and find out how.
Many thanks to the Canal and River Trust for allowing us to film the workshop. You can find out more about the Stanley Ferry workshop here canalrivertrust.org.uk/news-a...

You guys are the reason I keep watching CZcams and make me want to move to the UK and live on a boat. You are so informative. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with me.
Our pleasure 👍🏻
Every video of yours is a lesson in history or the technology that keeps the canal system running smoothly. Thanks from Missouri!
Wow, thanks!
Awesome Vlog! That was true documentary quality, great editing, and sound work. And don't push any buttons!
But the big red one....! 😂
What a coincidence, I watched a similar piece on TV last night in a documentary about the Liverpool to Leeds canal. Funny thing is your film was more informative, much funnier and better quality. Exceptionally well done guys.
Aww, thanks, Stev! x
Great video guys, thanks for the care and time taken to spotlight a fascinating and vital part of our canal network. Cheers 👍
Our pleasure!
Now that was worth watching..... now a vlog of the fitting please👍
LOL! Yes, sir 😂
Great video. Good to know how they manage replacing the locks. Their precision is amazing. The place must smell heavenly with all the wood😌
It did 😌
Fascinating. I'd love to see the whole process from the beginning ; how they drain each section of the canal, remove and replace gates etc.
Its really interesting
Another happy smile watching this video, reminds me of that women who flew around in a plane with her dog pippin, going to different places across the world educating everyone along the ride❤ keep it up lads x
Thank you 😘
Outstanding video, as a welder I'm always fascinated how other craftsmen go about doing what they do! Well done!
Thank you! x
Your articulate and professional presentation skills make you videos so compelling.
Aww, thanks, Wayne! Appreciated 👍🏻
This was fun and interesting to watch. I am fascinated by the British canals and lock system, and this presentation of how they make the replacement gates is tops, professional. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! Have a lovely weekend.
@@FoxesAfloat You, too! :-)
This video was great! Really helped to understand the door design. These are so sophisticated for something designed almost 3 centuries ago. The engineering is truly amazing. Thank you. 🌺🌸
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it, Chris xx
Great to understand all the extra bits that are part of canals! And british oak. Its a labour of love!
It sure is!
This is absolutely fascinating and informative. I didn't realize there were two facilities where the gates are manufactured of good old English oak. I'm glad three seedlings are grown for each tree taken. Knowing the history of the machines that drill out the planks is cool. Thank you for sharing this with us! Take care guys.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A big "Thank You" from the western side of The Pond.
We have nothing comparable to your narrowboats or public system of canals for simply touring around the country.
You have provided a massive amount of information for what looks to be a very interesting lifestyle [I was an unscheduled early retirement, and you can guess how appealing it looks for keeping active and diverted].
Cheers! Yeah, it's definitely different but not for everyone.
A very interesting, well put together vlog. I must say I thought it was TV quality material from you guys 👍👍
Thanks, Peter! x
Agreed Peter.👏
A wonderful sample why people love you guys so much. Thanks for the fun time!
Our pleasure!
Many thanks for doing this vid boys. As an ex joiner I found this totally fasinating. I've repaired fairground rides but not tried lck gates. All that oak mmmm I can smell it now, it was my favourite timber to work with. Big thanks to CRT for allowing you in as well.
Cheers!
Yeah what a good video, very interesting. More on the history and upkeep of the canals would be brilliant. Love the outtakes. Cheers 👍
Thanks, Derek.
so now we know how a lock gate is made. Well done guys. Enjoyed that.
Ta daa! 👍🏻
I’m not sure what fascinates me more about narrowboats and the canals. The history of it all or the idyllic nature of the whole thing.
Either way thanks so much for posting this! And I love the outtakes LOL
It might be cool if you did a bit on them dredging the canal floors while they are filled with water. What kind of interesting stuff gets pulled up come the bottom during dredging. Or any other non lock maintenance. Maybe tour some old lock keeper cottages that have been maintained in a historical manner.
It might be both those things, Jeremy. 👍🏻
I have all those machines in my workshop, only about 60 times smaller lol. Would love to work in a place like that. Another great informative show. Cheers
Cheers, Robin 👍🏻
Thanks guys that was great and a big thank you to Andrew. Loved hearing more about how the lock network is maintained. And as my husband says - you can't beat a bit of British oak! Paul & Helen x
Cheers guys. I'm sure the CRT crew at Stanley Ferry will be reading the comments too 👍🏻
Fascinating! Many thanks for showing us something that most will never see.
Our pleasure, Barney! 👍🏻
Wow,what a coup. In this case (an instance of successfully achieving something difficult) not the other meaning a (sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.) Seriously though it has to be one of the best videos you guys have done. It's great to see the skill and craftsmanship that goes on in keeping the network going as many people might not understand just how much time and effort it takes so top marks for the video.
Thanks, Steve. They are wizards! 👍🏻
Real men doing real work, nice to see nowadays. No cells phones in sight.
Yeah, unchanged in almost 2 centuries 💪
Heart[s] of Oak!
As an engineer I gotta love this kind of video. Who else but the foxes would even think to do one. Well done lads. 👍
Thank you Duncan, we loved filming it x
Only found your channel about a week ago but loving it and learning so much about our canals. As you can guess by my channel name I'm a magnet fisher and only really see the crap I pull out of canals rather than learning about the history of them. I think I'm about halfway through your back catalogues of vlogs but I'll be caught up soon.
Happy catching up!
Loved the behind the scenes look into making lock gates. Fascinating stuff and a great video. Love the outtakes!
Thanks, Tricia! x
Wow, Some serious work goes into them. Thanks for showing us just how much.
Thank you! 👍🏻
That oak is such a wonderful timber. It just seems to glow. Lovely vlog!
Thanks, Les 👍🏻
That was very educational thankyou and Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Thanks, Craig! 👍🏻
Thanks, Guys; thanks Andrew and crew.
👏
Been watching (at least) one of your vlogs every day for a few weeks now and enjoyed them all but this one is truly fascinating, my very best wishes, thanks guys.
Ah, cheers, Gareth 👍🏻
Oh Boys you've done yourselves proud again! A brilliant, brilliant Vlog! Keep them coming :)
Thank you! x
Very Interesting...I never thought about how these lock were made. Thanks....It would be great if you can do more of these instructional/educational Vlogs
Thanks, Lou!
Guys that was fantastic, have always wondered how they were built! Hats off to them for keeping our cut networks flowing
Thanks, Matt. They do a great job.
Loved this. Do more episodes like this. It's fascinating how all the canal systems work in England. I never even knew there were so many canals in England until I started following you both. I also never heard of a narrowboat. So I'm loving every bit of this. You need a TV show. Who do I talk to at BBC or perhaps the Travel Channel! Thanks and have a lovely weekend!
Haha! I wouldn't cope with TV, Deb. I can barely suppress my anxiety long enough to record a take! xx
I bet the aroma of that cut, seasoned oak was great!
It REALLY was ☺️
Knees at the start of the vlog! How lovely😆 Brilliant and very interesting subject. Thank you👍
Haha! Hope they didn’t shock too much 😂
Absolutely fascinating stuff. Love this informational stuff so much, gives us a brilliant insight into things we'd otherwise never get to know about.
Thanks guys 👍😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating stuff and dirt cheap when you think about it, a gate works out at 30p a day that's very good value for what they are expected to do and put up with
Exactly! They get some abuse too!
Brilliant. Enjoyed this so much.
Perfect. Have a lovely weekend!
This is a really good video,Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.😊👌😁
Thank you! Weeeeeekeeennnnnnnd! 🤩
You guys really are an inspiration ! Your vids ooze peace and joy , not to mention sharing your informative matters on mental health. Altogether one of the most wholesome channels ive happened upon.
Keep up the good work! Meantime, I shall be off to visit some friends on their Narrowboat this weekend thanks to your inspirations .. Hopefully for a trip through blisworth tunnel. I'd rather experience standedge you guys have coming up.. What a ride that looks set to be.. but alas tis' a bit far from us !
Have you guys travelled down here? Some really nice scenery and stoke bruerne is definiteky worth a stop off! (Good curry house on the waterfront too)
Meantime, All the best chaps!
We have visited in years gone by but not recently. Have a fabulous weekend with your friends. I hope the weather improves! ☀️
@@FoxesAfloat thanks! And indeed , weather permitting .. Bloody murpy weather! Have a good one chaps !
Great vlog guys. We passed here on our trip this year. Fabulous to get a bit more information on the way the gates are put together. Thank you.
No problem! Have a lovely weekend, Dawn. x
That was amazing. You two should have that on TV as a documentary. So 25 plus a bit years. I thought it might be longer. So Great to see the company is still going Strong.
Yeah, they do a great job 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat So you Guys. If I hadn't said it before.👍
Another brilliant episode
Thank you, Simon x
Well presented vlog lovely to know how the gates are made well done to all involved...thanks for sharing
Thank you, Ian. Glad you enjoyed it.
Brilliant work! I love these informative docu/vlogs that you are doing. I live in another country but am totally fascinated with the Industrial Revolution canal system from then to now. I also like how you can pick out the small quirky things to focus on and then the bigger things like the canal lock gates.
Thanks, Pauline. It fascinates me. I'm glad you enjoyed it too 👍🏻
Oh great, it's Friday, Foxes Afloat, fun and informative, bacon butty, a cup of tea. The weekend starts here!
Mmmmm... Bacon butty 😋
Your videos are the best and getting even better. Great work guys. Enjoying watching from midcoast Maine, USA.
Aww, thank you!
In a time when we chuck so much stuff away, it’s heart warming to see people making things to last. And this goes so well with David’s (Cruising the Cut) visit to Bradley. PS I’m catching you up. Just another 30 or so to go. ;-)
Haha! Getting closer! 😂
I really enjoyed this, well I enjoy all of your videos, but I'm a techie guy, so love all the working of any stuff, hope there is more to come of this type, as I'm going vlog by vlog. xx
Yeah, you're gonna love our new extra stuff later this year 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This video was so excellent in every way . Beautifully done indeed .
Thank you very much!
Really enjoy this one Guys, Thanks x
Cheers, Andy!
It was an open and shut case. And tremendously interesting! Thanks. Great to see aspects of the canal system that we tend to take for granted .... I wasn’t aware that so much effort and expense goes into lock gates.
Tadaaa! 😂
Not something you see everyday. Definitely one of the more interesting Vlogs I have seen in awhile.
Thanks, Rick!
Another cracking video boys informative and interesting thank you
Thank you! 👍🏻
Fantastic vlog! It’s so important not to lose the craftsmanship of our ancestors who built the canals and it was great to see how the gates are made. Good stuff! Well done 👍
Thanks, David.
As you said, fascinating. You're adding education to you're already entertaining vlogs. Thank you.
Thank you! 👍🏻
FABULOUS....
it looks like it was a top production company who filmed and produced this vlog !
Congratulations on a fantastic video, th commentary is professional and to the point.
Anyway, the professional work that they do is amazing.
Thank you Mr Foxes looking forward to your next video.
Ciao
Thank you! x
You are very welcome !
Thanks for the very interesting episode, well done. Ah, the old sneaked vs snuck debate at the intro, I’m with Colin, snuck is an invented word...
How about snooked? 😂
Wow so interesting. I worked in a wood shop. Love their machinery. They obviously take great care of them!
Yes they do
That was great guys. What a program trying to keep in step with the planned replacement program. The size of those gates too. The workshop tools are amazing, not for your usual kitchen cabinets made on those beasties, they're for serious woodchipping. Well done to the C&RT Crew pulling up with you two larrikins LOL
Haha! Nicely put 👍🏻
I would love to see a vlog in the winter of installing some new gates!
Noted!
Another lovely vlog. Did you get to push the button? Rich loves that song. I would have loved a look round that workshop. Thank you.
Fran x
Apparently, the big red button stops everything, but it was already stopped to stop me causing mischief 🙄 You'd have loved it, Fran! Lots we didn't get to show like the dry dock, offices, all the old photos and history was amazing! xxx
As you say "absolutely fascinating "
It really is 👍🏻
Great stuff, again, chaps! The more you understand the effort put into maintaining the canal system, the more you can really appreciate it. It's incredible, really. Cheers! x
Exactly right! People don't realise the effort that goes into maintaining it. x
Thanks - Looks like they're very proud of their work!
Incredible precision in the mortises and tenons- huge pieces of timber. What a wonderful job they do making such a critical piece of the infrastructure of the canal systems. Many thanks for such an educational and entertaining episode. 😃👌👌👏👏👏👏👏
I'm sure they're reading these comments too. Thanks, Terry!
fantastic video as usual! Its just staggering how 2 guys can produce such good quality videos. Love the fact you are trying new things also with this docu-videos, and its clearly working too!
Thanks, Ralph! Lovely feedback, thank you. Glad you'ree enjoying the adventures 👍🏻
Loved this!!! I love learning all the gadget/tech/structural things related to the narrowboat/canal world! Would love to see more about how you do boat maintenance etc too! Thanks so much - off to find me some cake!! Rx
Mmmmm... Cake!
Liked and subbed, finally. Great travelling with you guys, I'm in a wheelchair, but I feel like I've traveled merry old England with you fine gents and enjoyed it greatly.
Aww, Robert, Thank you and WELCOME! Hope you enjoy our journey 👍🏻
I love these backstory vlogs. Satisfies my technical curiosities very well. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
really interesting video. Such work that goes into the building of the gates!
Brilliant. Loving the info and the banter. Another great vlog. Thanks lads.
Thanks, James. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
So much craftsmanship in the lock gates, great vlog and very entertaining outtakes 👍
Thanks, Denise. Glad you enjoyed it.
Fascinating ...brilliant voice over ...so professional.
Thanks, Nicholas! Had a fab day there 👍🏻
What a way to spend my Saturday. Love your informative videos.
Thank you so much! xx
That was a pretty eyeopening piece, something missed but now well explained. Thanks Foxes for sharing and Andrew for facilitating.
Cheers, Peter! x
Once again a great and professional presentation. Thanks guys. I will resist any 'Carry On' innuendo... although there were plenty of opportunities, as shown in the last outtake. I loved the way Andrew pronounced "Hoops". The have a slight accident oops.
Ah, don't hold back, Bob. Grab the innuendo where it feels good and let go 😂
@@FoxesAfloat Haha. maybe next time. My favourite Carry On Coment. Lady with a guest in her flat shoos away a cat. " Get off the sofa Cooking Fat" The guest says " Cooking fat?" She replies "Well...That's what the caretaker calls it! "
Absolutely amazing and informative video. What a privilege to be taken inside the workshop where these lock gates are actually manufactured. Thank you so much for all of your hard work.👏🏻👏🏻
Aww, thank you for watching, Janet 👍🏻
Thank you for going there.welove to see how things are made. Your vlogs are always entertaining.
Thanks Lisa!
Another great vlog. Well cut together and informative.
We really look forward to these each week. Thanks. C
Thank you so much ❤️
What a terrific piece of content! Thanks for the tour chaps! A side of life on the canals that normally stays behind the scenes!
Aww, thanks Heath! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Yes! Thank You and the Canal & River Trust for this video, this darn Yankee is very glad to see how the gates are made and I was wondering about the inspections and replacement. This answered those questions and I do like it that for eery tree felled, 3 more are planted.
Thanks, Maggie!
Fantastic craftsmanship and tradition - Another great vlog👍
Thanks, Mike x
Well done. It was interesting to see how they make new gates. Keep up the good work. From sunny Florida, USA.
Thanks, William 💜
Thanks for sharing. The outtakes were very funny on this episode!
Haha! Thank you, Sylvia! xxx
Lololololol. Great viddy. Beautifully rounded. Please push the big red button. Love you guys.
They wouldn't let me, Carolyn! 🙈
@@FoxesAfloat they should have. :)

Very interesting and formative Vlog , thank you for making me smile and getting me through Covid I have been in bed two weeks finally tested negative this morning still feeling lethargic, thank you for being two lovely people , I am really enjoying watching and also you have taught me a lot about narrowboats as I have only lived on one for one year. 💋
Great seeing the industry behind the locks, real old school stuff. Cheers!
👍🏻
Absolutely fascinating. Much appreciated. Thanks.
Cheers, Bob!
What a fascinating Scoop for the Foxes, a well made and very informative vlog. Thanks again, guys. Hope Dillon is recovering well.
Yeah, he's doing fine. Thanks, Derek 👍🏻
