I was lost trying to understand how people are able to improvise so fluidly, but this actually just gave me a clear path forward. Thank you!
Thanks Jack. Your knowledge, generosity, and kindness, always seem to create a perfect summer breeze. Looking forward to hearing you all at Riverside.
My pleasure!
I'm getting on a bit trying to get back in to playing, this makes the fretboard fit together like a jigsaw which is so helpful. Thank you Jack, you're the most patient and chilled guitar teacher, beautiful guitar too
Dear Jack, there are so many tutorials out there, but yours is so unique. Finally got CAGED, and really enjoyed the ride. Keep on with your excellent work, and remember youre spreading your love for music and personal charm all over the globe.
Dory from Tel aviv.
I wish I had studied just this one Caged lesson instead of the dozens of confusing Caged videos I worked on a couple years ago! It is well thought through and complete and even includes a mention of the systems shortcomings. Well done Jack!
Glad it was helpful!
It’s crazy how one day everything just clicks and it all comes together. This lesson made that happen. I’ve understood caged for a year or so now but this lesson just made it all come together with the scales and arpeggios. Thanks a lot buddy! Your lessons are the best and you just gained another Patreon subscriber!
I really appreciate your approach to presenting this material. So calm, direct and on the money. I have been playing guitar for longer than I care to remember, and every time I watch one of your videos I learn something useful. Thank you!
Great lesson. I didn't realise that you had courses available. That is very good news. I am a bit busy at present but I will purchase your blues course within the next couple of months. Love your videos.
Thank you Jack , really helpful tutorial.
Thanks Jack for explaining how the two overlap. Appreciate the help.
Fantastic teaching!!
Clear & concise.
Thanks👍👍
You are welcome!
Thanks Jack, you're perspective on this is easy to understand and covers a lot of bases, provides a good platform to practice from by showing how it all fits together!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Quickly identifying those triads on the fly is everything.
Fantastic Lesson Jack!!!!
Thanks Jack! I'm working on the CAGED method since a few months ago and it's really useful. You explained it clearly. Best regards from Barcelona!
Great to hear!
Super well constructed lesson, Jack
Lovely so well explained I need lessons now !
Your playing is so beautiful - and it seems effortless. Thanks for the CAGED explaniation.
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful, excellent lesson Jack! And at 12:50 a master class in dynamics!
Great post! No substitute for digging into songs/progressions with this framework.
Another thing to hang on the shapes, are the corresponding major/minor pentatonic scales. Loved your Triad approach to rhythm playing. Tasty!
Not getting lost, transitioning between all the inversions can be tricky? But, rehearsing running around all the different positions makes improvising so much easier.
It was great seeing you on Uncle Larry's sub the other day! That Riverside Revival idea should prove to be a most excellent venue for you guys to teach and perform! Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and skills here for all to enjoy. Your guitar prowess is only overshadowed by your kindness!! God bless you, Jack!!
Thank you! Yes we are all looking forward to doing some cool things there
Nice. One of THE best caged tutorials I have ever seen; THANKS!
Wow, thanks!
I always learn something from your videos.
Jack Ruch, you just made my Christmas wish come true. I was recently scavenging CZcams trying to find a really good 'CAGED system explained' video only to find myself saying, "I really wish Jack Ruch would make a CAGED system explained video.' My friend, you did not disappoint!
Glad I could help!
Talk about a 💡 moment … connecting the c cord positions 🤯 Thanks so very much!!! 💯
Nice, Jack! 🔥🎸🐶
Thanks Jack!
Just discovered your channel and i’m really impressed. High quality lessons and insights. Plus, your playing is so unique and tasteful - it just pours out so fluidly. Awesome! I’m committed to getting over the “theory” hump and can’t wait to do a deep dive on your other vids 👍🤙🤙subbed
Awesome, thank you!
I've been playing for almost twenty years and never learned any of this. My head is exploding but thanks!
The video content and delivery is excellent - as usual. I do notice that the color of your clothes, guitar, camera positions etc are improving the “look” of the video. Thanks as always for your wisdom and sharing!
Thank you Jack 🙏
An awesome guitar lesson. 👍🎶🙏
Very nice. Excellent explanation. I have been trying to find a place to start learning lead playing and wondered if the caged system is a good place to start. Along with mixing in triads, you have convinced me this is an excellent place to start. Thank you for this. Could you put together maybe a really good exercise using a loop to play over what you would consider a really good chord progression / starting point? Thank you so very very much again for this!!!!!!
I would just start with a basic 1 4 5 chord progression. If you’re a member of his Patreon, I’ve been having great results with his BB king backing track. But there’s tons of them on CZcams too.
Thank so much Jack for this amazing lesson... How I wish there's a tab display for all the play examples. Nonetheless, I appreciate this
Thanks!
Thank you!!!!!
💖💝 greating from Normandy in France !
Question. Is this like Jimmy Bruno's five fingerings but, more complicated in a way?
It’s exactly the same thing. Not more complicated
Thanks a lot!
Beside CAGED system I find the intervalic function system also a very effective way to visualize the whole fretboard. I find it even slightly better because of the smaller information I have to memorize as opposed to the big shapes from CAGED or 3NPS.
Also, I can easily construct things like triads without using predefined chord shapes.
Yeah that’s a great way too. Helped me a lot with my arpeggios. I’ve been kind of combining both of these methods with great success. Caged really helps me see the chord changes.
Any Links, please..?
Awesome lesson Jack 🙏🥰!!!!!! What is you guitar pick please ? French fan here 🇫🇷👏🎸
That's all great. How do you use it all though to improvise melodically and not mechanically like the jam you did with Guthrie Trapp for Heritage Guitars? It was great!
I was using the 2-notes then one note per string sequence to play an odd, playful riff straight across within 3 frets. Some of those little diddys you play as an exercise maybe. But with that idea you can run up some melodic stuff
Jack! Can you plz show the approach on the chord progression like |Bm7|Bbmaj7| beside chord tones , arpeggios and pentatonic????
Jack gives you the keys to the guitar kingdom at the 10:36 minute mark. Thank you Jack. Please take my money
Light Bulb moment. Wow!
I plan on committing myself to carefully watching this lesson of Jack's 5-7 times.........at separate times and with a clear head to drive all this great info into my thick guitar skull!! I did just this on Jack's fantastic 12-Bar blues in G off his TF Shades of Blues course and this paid off HUGE dividends for me!! Jim C.
Thank you!
The TrueFire course is worth every cent and more. I've improved more on guitar with that one course than with hundreds of CZcams videos.
Are you recording direct in this video ?
the caged changed my life 20 years ago...and now the lives of my Students .COMPLETELY UNLOCKS THE FRETBOARD! every pro knows this wether they know it or not:)
Hi Jack your Patreon supporters are still waiting for Slow Blues Ex 3 from video posted on December 15th…
Why do you not play your scales from root to root?
Probably so you can see all of the notes of the scale that might come before the root? Those come in handy
How would you learn all kind of upper extension cords based on the system? Is it possible to memorize everything without just cramming physical shapes from chord charts?
This is a good question, and there isn't an easy answer. Having a good ear helps. Learning basic intervals by ear helps big time. It all comes down to putting in hours of practice. There's no shortcut for this. But the practice is very rewarding and pays off eventually. The key is not just noodling on the guitar but playing stuff like Jack is teaching here until you can do it in your sleep. The upper extensions start to come into focus eventually. You hear guys like Guthrie Trapp, Tom Bukovac, and of course, Mr. Ruch play these things effortlessly, but that only comes from years of wood shedding. I wish there was an easy way to sound like these guys, but alas! All the best to you in your journey!!
@@Sammywhat great answer so true 🤓
about the so called cage system is false G and A are the same C and D also as to is E and G..Only three shapes with minor it work easily on Em Am Dm ..Cm is the only difficult shape to play but it is ligament
you have four 6ths going across the board ..first fret F6 Bb6 Eb6 Ab6 and four minor Fm Bbm Ebm Abm
I’m lost…
I have mad respect for you buddy but you've kind of skipped over the fact that the CAGED system does not actually help you learn scales better at all. The chord shapes do not have enough information to come up with the scales. 3-4 notes vs 5-7. You have to pick the correct notes out of the options available to you at a position and ignore ones that don't fit. This is a longer way of saying you have to know the scales to play the scales. CAGED does not help there one bit. This CAGED thing seems to be something people expect you to cover but I don't really think you think it's valuable seeing your reliance on triads instead. All the talk about a so called "system" but it all boils down to the fact that there is a thing called barre chords, and they are movable PLUS you don't have to play the duplicated notes in a chord. That latter bit is actually pretty useful information. One loses their mind trying to figure out what the pros are doing until they realize they don't really play open or barre chords all that much. They play triads, or larger arpeggios usually. Anyway. Like I said. I know you have to do CAGED videos because you have to (even Tomo Fujita did a few and he's having trouble keeping a straight face while doing it), but God damn does it keep people blocked in boxes.
