    In this video I talk about my views on the Caged System. A well known, but often discussed topic about how we can become a master of the fretboard. I know it's a long video. I could've done it in under ten minutes, but there are many 'buts' and 'ifs' to the story. This is my take on Caged, enjoy!

      @Paul Davids Would you considere make a video of this series explaining the concept of "key" and "root". Why a musical piece or a secuence of notes and chords is in a given "key"? Can a musical piece or secuence of notes/chords be in more then one at the same time? How ambiguous or not is this concept?. Also would be nice to know how to recognize a key. Thank you. As always great videos and grrat teaching.

  • @theartfuldodger935
    @theartfuldodger935 Před 6 lety +104

    All CAGED is is the shape of the chord on each string where the root is:
    E - G shape
    A - C shape
    D - E shape
    G - A shape
    B - D shape
    It is important to know where each natural note lies on the fretboard.
    The chord will form around it depending on which string the root is found on.
    The scale or mode will flow around the root.

      except that the G shape also has a root on the 3rd and 1st strings, the C also the 2nd string, the E also 6th and 1st, the A the 5th and D also on the 4th...

    • @theartfuldodger935
      @theartfuldodger935 Před 4 lety +13

      @@chr15tree The root can be found on every string in 2 places. But that's not the point. The point is where do you want to be playing that chord on the fretboard at a particular time? Low? Medium? Or high? You find where the nearest root note is, determine what string it's on and then that determines the shape. Watch good players. They aren't like John Lennon, playing bar chords jumping up and down the neck. They stay in one position and play shapes, using the root notes in the same vicinity.

    • @KayakFishingAddict
      @KayakFishingAddict Před 3 lety +3

      @@theartfuldodger935 I think I just had an epiphany...first, thanks for your observation. I didn't realize that about "good players" playing chords in the same vicinity. I imagine that's to optimize movements or is that for voicing? Either way, I've been trying to figure out the relationship between chord shapes and pentatonic shapes. Your comment made me think that the chord shapes and the pentatonic scale shapes overlap one another in a way I hadn't thought of (I'm teaching myself how to play).... is it true that if I use a given chord shape to play a chord, that the same pentatonic shape surrounding that chord shape is the corresponding pentatonic scale? E.g. if I use the E shape to play an A chord, then the E shaped pentatonic scale is the scale around that A chord... or am I confused?

This is how I try to incorporate it into my playing after never using it for 20 plus years in my playing. This helps with good voice leading and trying to avoiding parallel 5ths.

    All these years I thought it was crap I didn't feel like learning.. come to find out, I knew this. haha. But knowing that order is very helpful. Now I want to make a 35 second CAGED video.
    Played for 30 years bar chords and all, even some intuitive leaps... but KNOWING the next form just like that... I feel dumb for blowing it off all these years. Someone just needed to say, "Contemplate WHY the G bar chord is E shaped, it matters." I even knew about the D shape based on the 5th fret and it didn't click.

Thanks again for for your videos. They always cheer me up too; a very beneficial side effect.

I had zero interaction with real humans when it comes to learning music from theory to playing. I have begun to play piano and guitar on my own, albeit not well, but at least I am not afraid. Thank you all teachers on CZcams. Darn, thanks to the internet and CZcams, physically joining a class is a thing of the past.

Then he goes crazy in 2011 or whatever and has all those insane interviews that get him cancelled for a few years... it just feels like John Mayer's career is a TV show with really good writers that know how to foreshadow well. Gotta love him.
