If MatPat had access to small children in each state, you know he'd be running an experiment to analyze candy, with the same costume for control.
@@InvestmentIdea now that would be a sight to see if it wasn't just fake.
@@InvestmentIdea Oh no, you're spreading across the platform. I've seen this multiple times now across different youtubers
Give it a few years for more of his members to become parents with walking children
He would be arrested before that
He does tho
I was literally sitting here eating candy corn and MatPat attacks me for no reason.
What’s so bad about candy corn anyway?
@@joanchiu2822 that's what I'm saying 😭
I love the texture too, chewy yet soft and melty
I feel the same way. As someone who's obsessed with Hot Tamales and has a mother who both loves Hot Tamales AND Candy Corn, I felt very slandered 😂
He's teasing, I know- but I buy myself those tasty cinnamon capsules whenever I want a good comfort candy.
SAME!
Candy corn is pretty good, but I also think it is most associated with Halloween as it doesn't really show up in any time that isn't fall.
MatPat is one of those CZcamsrs whose videos you binge watch then get burnt out on. A month or two later you remember he exists and now there’s a bunch of new videos with which you can repeat the process. It’s a wild ride.
How did you know? That's the reason i'm watching this.
Years for me but yeah
I'm doing this right now
Same
I’m yet to burn out
I actually really like candy corn. It tastes very sugary and that’s what I want from my candy. It’s not my favorite, but if you mix it with some peanuts you have sweet and salty
YES! Candy corn GOOD!
Agreed
I still don’t get why candy corn is hated :(
I love the stuff!
Can’t agree more 😋
Yeah, candy corn is pretty good.
Another factor, a friend of mine recently mentioned her son’s school told them they can’t buy candy with nuts due to kids having allergies. So maybe people buy less popular candy like a Snickers or Peanut M&Ms to avoid / prevent kids from having an allergic reaction.
What?
????
Good point but doesn't help that most other candies are still made on equipment shared with candies that contain nuts
Nah fam, that is just natural selection at work
I'm sorry but I always HATED that. Those parents are Karens, there are other parents that have kids with allergies, but they don't try to dictate others diets. It's all because they're too lazy to look after their kid themselves, so they make it everyone's problem.
Also I love that MatPat’s “your neighbors hate your kids” was concluded with “because they aren’t made of money” 😅
Lol
What? I don’t get it
My thought exactly lol
Lol
How utterly american.
My grandma always used to give out Kit-Kats and Snickers. Unfortunately a lot of the neighbors stopped giving out candy for one reason or another (some died, some moved, some just couldn't afford it). Grandma's no longer able to give out candy herself but I think my aunt, who she now lives with, does something for Halloween.
Growing up in Ohio I can attest to the m&ms being so popular literally half of the bag used to be those tiny m&m bags
... so Ohio is the only logical state?... THE MEMES ARE A LIE! (living in the UK but I watch memes from 'Murica)
Makes sense, it can't melt
Counterargument: The kids don't necessarily take ALL of the candy you buy. If you get too much, you have to eat the surplus yourself. As a result, people will genuinely buy good varieties of candy for Halloween. That's why I have so much chocolate in my minifridge right now. It's just waiting for the time when I can plausibly eat the ̶w̶h̶o̶l̶e̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶s̶h̶ leftovers.
Fax
My family ends up buying a few bags of chocolate for Halloween, eat the bags before Halloween, buy a few more, get few kids, eat the surplus.
Na, most people buy the crappy candy to put out and get the good chocolate for themselves. In the states that chose candy corn etc. They seemingly don't have high population densities and have way more farmland or distance between houses so people probably care even less.
That's exactly what I came here to say. I don't buy candy I won't eat, but i also have the palate of an eight year old, so most kids like what I give out
what brand of chocolate
The other reason that I've heard of for people getting less than desirable candy to give out on Halloween other than price is that so they themselves won't end up eating any leftovers. Some people specifically give out candy they themselves do not like so that they won't be tempted to eat any of what doesn't get taken by the kids.
My Mom tried to do that in 2020 when she was on her diet.. we needed candy but she thought giving out the cheap nasty candy would be fine as it wouldn’t tempt her, and I decided to use some saved money to get the good chocolate stuff. She was so angry and Ofcourse eating the candy at the same time. XD
My dad likes to buy his favorite candies knowing there aren’t that many kids in our neighborhood so that he can eat the leftovers. Like three bags when we need one type of thing lol
@@LeTushie same lol, we get no trick or treaters anymore.
well you can buy a quality candy you dont like but many others do though, so by buying cheap garbage that's just basically an excuse and if you have leftovers what will you do throw em away? give cheap and old candy out in the future? its not even gonna be eaten by the kids
My best friend will go through a box of hot tamales as much as he can. It’s ridiculous. Lol
I think this is a pretty good video The only thing I have a small problem with is that candies like hot tamales or candy corn are some of the more dense and weighty candies out there so with the lower price point also comes less candy
Random Arin was very much appreciated! Love for big cat ❤
These are no longer theories, we are simply witnessing Matt’s gradual transformation into a mad scientist
gradual? he's cooked food in a dryer twice now, and has tried wearing bread as gloves, i dont think its gradual 😂🤣
He was already mad before FNAF, he completely lost in in the last 8 years.
Sorry for your loss

@@doctorg3676 Really 🤔?
Candy corn is the first candy that comes to mind when thinking about Halloween as a non-american who has never ever seen them IRL. They often show up in Halloween game and movie events. Therefore, I think its also an aesthetic thing. The tamales are cheap AND orange-ish.
they have very unique taste
Candy corn actually tastes really good, try it sometime if you have it available nearby.
@@theclockman775 meh, it's alright, gets to be too much very quickly
@@protalghulnist4126 it honestly depends on the person. I love it
My husband LOVES Hot Tamales...but he's really into hot cinnamon flavor.
You would be surprised by how much Candy Corn is popular when no other candy is around. One year, when I was in school, my teacher had a bowl of candy corn after Halloween that we could take, before the end of the period, the whole bowl was gone, even after my teacher refilled it
One thing you missed is variety packs. I'd imagine this candy variety packs are going to have a lot of the cheaper candies. Most people buy variety packs because that's all there is. Seriously, I went looking for full size bars to give out and a lot of places only offer variety snack size packs
Walmart has regular sized (2022) bars. So does QuikTrip, Target, Kroger, Dollar stores (maybe). Regular size doesn't mean the same thing as it used to decades ago. Candy bars and confections have steadily been getting smaller over time since their first release. Sometimes there will be "giant" sized promos that are gimmicks or what their original portion used to be.
Yeah, nowadays, “fun size” is just really tiny, but it’s considered the normal size. “king size” used to be the normal size but now it’s, well, king size.
@@Bliffenstimmers 🌈imagina- er, 💵inflation💵

I went to BJs Club, they have cases of full size Hershey's at a good price comparable to the bags of minis. I stopped giving out minis a few years back comparing what was left over and what I spent. I rained so it was down this year. When you put on a light and music show with animated faces visible from the highway, I stock up.
As a Minnesotan, I see the obsession with hot tamales candy. You can buy big bulk bags of them here and I know growing up kids were obsessed with them. They even make them in candy canes I see them every year at grocery stores and they sell well. When I think of hot tamales candy to Halloween, I think of how minty candy canes are to Christmas. Also it’s COLD here, that cinnamon can warm you up at the bus stop for school.
Thanks for the video!
Never heard of hot tamales as candy until now. I just think of the Mexican food, tamales - and imagine a good dish of spicy and very tasty tamales. Then again, I haven't been a sweet tooth for years!
@@diannt9583 they're not really like tamales, just little cinnamon gummy candies.
I honestly never got many of those in my candy bag growing up so that surprises me. I also hate them though so I guess I may have just blocked them from my memory.
So YOU GUYS were the reason Hot Tamales were everywhere! I was also raised in Minnesota and they were everywhere when I was growing up, and I could never escape them! They were literally the only candy I didn't like until that one time I ate to much and threw up, leaving me with a food aversion to non-chocolate candy. Sadly this only made Hot Tamales worse for me...
Especially great for those of us who loved cinnamon toothpicks.💯😋
matpat: its not like anyone is gonna go to the checkout corner to get candy corn and hot tamales for themselves.

My neighbor does not hate me 100%. She gives me popsicles every time I come around whenever I ask for them, even if it's cold out. She's like well if you want it. So yeah, she's the best neighbor I've ever had
My mom is a Hot Tamalas fanatic, she has to get some a couple times a week because it 'makes her happy' and we often find them all over the floor, in her sheets or between the couch cushions when she cleans the house.

I love candy corn and it’s very underrated, when I tell people that I like candy corn they usually look at me funny. But it’s just a weird candy that I like. I would go so far to eat not even during the Halloween season but all season. It’s just how I am.
Candy corn is just a really fun candy, even if it's pretty much just sugar.
What's good is candy corn mixed with peanuts and m & ms or any other sweet and salty mix.
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like them, so I felt like mat was gaslighting me into eating less of my favorite candy
I also like candy corn for the same reason.
Plus, did you know that if you stack candy corn in a cylindrical shape,it looks like actual corn?
It's really good, and it's supposed to be honey flavor or made with honey, and I absolutely hate honey but I adore candy corn
Matpat: "Viewer beware! You're in for a scare."
Me: "That's Goosebumps."
as a Floridian I am extremely proud to have crunches are most eaten candy and giving out candy on Halloween
I can definitely confirm this. For my house, we buy the cheap candy in bulk, and at the end of the night we dump what's left into the last few visitors bags to get rid of it, and if we want candy after that we shop the days after Halloween and get a discount on the good candy.
I mean yea sorry about kids getting candy corn hot tamalies and such but like I'm gifting a bunch of kids who are gonna pester me for hours for free candy.
@LAKEHUNTIST🇷🇺[Z] with that baity nickname. probably not.
Funny story from a friend of mine back in high school:
One Halloween, he and his brother were left in charge of handing out the giant bag of candy their parents bought because they were out of town that night.
My friend and his brother decided they didn't want to give the candy to a bunch of little kids, so they instead made up a crap ton of pancakes and handed them out.
Next morning, they awoke to find their front yard covered with pancakes.
😂😂😂 That is so mean, such a waste of food but unfortunately hilarious
Big oof.
Mmm Hot tamales… literally my fav due to the spice they provide while the underlying cinnamon flavor enhances it quite well. I always enjoy a box of them. i find them so good to enjoy, but then again i love spices myself
0:56 I like how its literally one of my favorite youtubers too
For the Candy Corn and Hot Tamales price per pound, I hope you referenced prices from versions of those candies sold in fun size type bags, and not like just loose candies. You can't give trick or treaters loose Candy Corn, and the loose candy versions probably cost less which would affect the data.
I feel like candy corn could mess up the data in the fact that it’s an iconic Halloween candy you can’t get year round In stores, also I love candy corn, good to know it’s cheaper and I won’t have to be sharing if so many dislike it
I mean, if the theory is that the neighbors hate your kids, you could totally give out loose candy corn since they likely won't eat it
I’m giving trick or treaters loose candy corn just because you said this
@@Shalyse1 The theory is kind of stupid because being cheapskates isn't proof that neighbors HATE your kids.
Food theory idea:
Are restaurants ripping you off at the drive thru? Are the portion sizes dramatically different when you dine in or take out? My family notices (or seems to notice) this quite a bit at Panera.

As a fan of candy corn, finding individually wrapped halloween distributed packages are pretty rare. Given that those can’t really be given out as easily, they’re probably just a being purchased by people that actually eat them.

Hot Tamales are so good. I don't buy them often, but when I do, I buy a lot and eat them fast 😂
Proud of Idaho and Arin Hanson for having the excellent taste of loving candy corn 🤍🧡💛
I think you'd really be surprised at what children actually like. A lot of kids really like extreme flavors. I took to offering Trick-or-treaters 2 baskets to choose from: chocolate-based candy bars, or other stuff. (The other stuff was sugar based candies and non-food items like Halloween pencils.) So, so many children happily exclaimed, "Other stuff!!" It seemed a good half of the kids were bored by chocolate.
kids tend to prefer sour candy (especially the extremely sour candy) than adults so that kind of makes sense. i remember warheads being a big thing when i was a kid. also cheap candies that come in big containers are preferred by kids to smaller, but higher quality better tasting candies. kids aren't as concerned about quality as much as quantity. so cheaper in bulk is likely to draw in a kid more so than smaller but better taste and texture. how many adults still love pop rocks and nerds as much as they did when they were kids?
@@fionazelmann7541 True, though my love affair with Pop Rocks will never die!
@Coolgamer2000s what about it?
@Coolgamer2000s I used to love Tamarind hard candies and lychee gummies as a kid
@@fionazelmann7541 Kids always love the peculiar. I remember reading about a family who would grab the usual bulk candy, but also a large bag of potatoes that they would put by the door. When kids showed up, they'd drop a potato on top of the candy jar and let them choose what they wanted. More often than not, the kids would immediately go for the potato.
It's a well-known trend that if you buy Halloween candy that you yourself aren't a fan of, it's less likely to be gone by the time Halloween actually hits. Variety packs are also a popular buy, and we tend to give out the candies we like the least from those so that we still have some of the candies we like if there's any left over.
YES! or it's brought to coworkers after the holiday
This is the first Food Theory video without the intro. Truly the beginning of the end.
One thing to consider about candy corn is the tradition of having it around during the season just like the egg whoppers are available and usually in a bowl somewhere in the house near the kitchen during spring.
I'd also like to point out the trend of buying large amounts of candy to put out as decoration, especially candy corn. I can't count how many times I was confused as a kid going to my relatives' houses and being so confused why my aunts and grandma always had giant jars of candy sitting around but no one was allowed to eat them - candy corn, swedish fish, m&ms, anything sugary and corn syrupy
My grandma keeps a clear glass pumpkin-shaped bowl of candy corn at her house as decoration but we're allowed to eat a few pieces of it at a time
You can't eat them because that candy corn has probably been in those jars for years! At least that's the case with my mom's jars. The lids were hot glued shut years b4 I was even born.

I love Hot Tamales, and Candy Corn is the *only* Holiday-specific candy I like. Maybe our neighbors don't hate our kids, they just buy the cheapest thing they themselves think is good. After all, giving kids candy they don't like makes retaliation more likely than keeping the lights off, which is even cheaper.
Agreed I grab Hot Tamales almost every week when my paycheck comes in because unlike Mat Pat some people like spicy candies
I spent most of my life unaware that keeping the lights off was a thing; my family would just always arrange to not be home that night. (We have religious objections to the holiday). There’s another thing that makes candy corn popular: decorations. They’re edible, so waxy they won’t just rot, and last for a couple months.
Source: my mom’s done candy corn in jars for fall seasonal decor for years. Be it beneath a candle (that’s never lit) or just filling a small mason jar set with miscellaneous candies and using candy corn as a colourful space filler somebody will probably eat, there’s a lot you can do with them.

I also think that candy corn is popular because Instagram shows people using it for decor rather than eating
While I wouldn't call it a high-ranking favorite, I do appreciate Hot Tamales and generally consider them a good "budget" candy. They're tasty enough to enjoy, and fact that they're a bit too strong to eat more than a handful of at a time makes them last a lot longer since you're not tempted to wolf down the entire box in one sitting.
You have a horrible pallette
You say that as if I haven't inadvertently snarfed a whole box in one sitting...
I ate a fairly large box of Hot Tamales in one go and ENJOYED IT!
Edit: I love Cinnamon so that might explain why I enjoyed eating a lot of them really fast.
Ha I wish I’ll still eat the whole thing cuz me and my terrible self control eat all and any candy 😂

On Hershey as a PA kid... that chocolate factory tour was really fun when I was a kid! It was as close as a kid could get to the fantasy of rushing into Willy Wonka’s factory. Plus they had a thing for kids where you can customize your own candy bar.
If you’re ever somehow in the more rural parts of the state (not that I see why you would just be wandering amongst the woods?) I recommend stopping by Hershey!
The make your own chocolate bar is so fun. And you get to customize the label on the container it comes in!
candy corn is legit good. so versatile. Taste isnt too bland but not too overpowering
I think there is 1 point Matpat may be overlooking: many people who buy candy for halloween do so with the knowledge that they get to eat whatever they dont give away. While some might be based on expense, id expect that the sales would correlate (not connotate) to peoples tastes.
I like the hot tamale candies, they are definitely in my top 10. I just love cinnamon candies in general, especially cinnamon jelly beans.
Thank you. A sane person
Agreed
YES
Small discrepancy with the weight. KitKat bars are like minimal chocolate and mostly wafers which have a lot of air.
On top of that, other candy bars are made of lots of different mixtures which could add weight. Like caramel(afaik) is pretty heavy.
As well, the reason for buying cheap candy is to make sure the house has enough, not just to cheap out on candy handouts.
I totally agree with Aaron Hanson, I do like candy corn.
I love when all my interests come together. Food theory, candy, and football!!
As a Pennsylvanian, I would like to confirm every time on Halloween nearly all the candy is either MARs or Hershey. Sadly though, that means all the Hershey candy bars are gone within seconds😢
Amen brother. This state loves their Hershey chocolate
Food theory idea: Hey matpat, something that bothered me a whole lot growing up was the 5 second rule. I'd love to hear if it was any good and why it became as big as it did. Thanks for considering!
Brilliant!!
tons of studies on it, and it's totally untrue even if you drop it an pick it up as fast as possible it will still have tons of bacteria, you might have less depending on the surface though like more bacteria on food you drop on hard wood as opposed to carpet because surface area and all that.
It’s totally fake, however drier foods such as cookies will have significantly less bacteria then something wetter, like a buffalo wing or cake
Arin Hanson swooping in to save the Candy Corn honor wasn’t on my prediction list for this video but it sure was a nice surprise
I can say MN my whole town is OBSESSED with Hot Tamales. I do not but everyone else will eat them for breakfast lunch and dinner if they could.
Would love to see the Hershey's community theory. Let's do it!
Maybe some sort of theory connecting Hershey park and Nuka World from Fallout?
Or just company towns in general. When you mentioned Hershey, PA, “Sixteen Tons” came to mind immediately. Since you already mentioned two and I know of several more, I’m sure there’s enough info on food related ones for an episode.
When I was in 7th grade, I had friends from school come to my house trick or treating, we didn't have any candy to pass out, and they got small boxes of raisins. I was embarrassed, but they actually came back for more. We still had quite a bit, so I gave them all of it.
Honestly chocolate covered raisins and nuts are so much better then an average candy bar
Marley Candycorn is Delicious. Defanantly a candy I remember always wanting to find in my basket. It’s like marshmallows, except more solid
Man, MatPat be attacking Hot Tamales... and Candy Corn (which I have not eaten).
I would like to note that, though Kit Kats are expensive pound for pound, they're also very light. A package with the same _volume_ as the Snickers bag would be lighter.
It’s no theory, my neighbors have explicitly expressed their hatred of me, and they’re always so rude about it, interrupting my 2AM trumpet practice, like what are they even doing up so late
They're recording you so they can upload your amazing performance to CZcams and claim the millions in ad revenue for themselves. What you need to do is get a large drum and start banging it as you practice to drown out the sound of your playing so they can't record it.
That reminds me of a joke my dad told me:
An Irish immigrant moves to an apartment in the US. About a week in, he gets a call from his mother, asking how he's doing. "Terrible," he responds. "All my neighbors are awful."
"What do you mean?" his mom asks.
"Well, my one neighbor just cries all day. She's weeping and wailing, and sometimes there's yelling."
"Oh dear."
"There's another one who just bangs on the wall angrily all day. He seems really upset all the time. I feel bad for him, to be honest."
"I would too."
"Then there's one who just screams foul language all day. I don't know what his deal is at all."
"That seems awful, dear," his mother says. "What do you do when all of this happens?"
"Oh, nothing. I just keep sitting there and playing my bagpipes."
I think theres another way of looking at this
People buy cheap candy because alot of people dont have much money to throw around but still want to participate in the holiday
Some may even want to give camdy to children to make them happy just on a budget
12:49 That spatula is generally called an offset spatula. If you want the exact type that looks like a perforated long turner
Candy corn is literally my favorite fall candy, and that sentiment is shared by a host of people I know who would definitely put it top 5.
Wasn’t expecting Arin to be in a food theory video but i love it so much, and i agree with him: candy corn is delicious!
Also yeah florida is typically not 90 degrees on halloween night when everyone is actively trick or treating, so the melty chocolate isnt that much of a problem i think
I like candycorn, but if I eat too much of it then it gets kind of gross
Same here in Arizona. The Heat™finally ended just maybe two weeks ago. It was over a hundred degrees most days in September and at the beginning of October. It backed off into the nineties about two weeks ago, and then the Heat™just shut off. And it rained. And rained. And rained some more. Now it is nice, only getting up to the mid-eighties most days, some never exceeding even eighty.
@@dannypipewrench533 While I'm here living in michigan and the weather is crazy, some weeks it's insanely cold and then other weeks it's perfectly fine. Our weather is weird
@@pizzapatrica7044 This whole continent is weird.
I like it, though.
It’s hot in fl but not that hot
