I loved Herbie the Love bug as a kid. I decided to make my own Herbie!
I found the correct L87 Pearl powder paint, and the decals were available on Ebay. I had to modify the front and rear bumpers to make them correct. The interior of the actual Herbie is a light Tan. I found a Almond colored paint to repaint the interior to match the original Herbie. Chroming out the center caps on the rims finishes off the look. You forgot one thing though. Herbie’s signature gray sunroof.
I didn’t forget it. I didn’t want to cut into the roof and windshield plastics. If it went wrong I wouldn’t be able to fix it.

Great job, and great little details, it must have taken a steady hand to paint the hub caps, and mounting the decals. However I would have liked to have seen the tail lights painted red as well.
Easter egg: 🐣 The letters and numbers on Herbie's tag have a hidden meaning.. “The Love Bug's” producer, Robert Stevenson, first worked with Walt Disney in August of 1957, so OFP stands for “Our First Production” and 857 represents August of 1957.
Powder Coat looks like the way to go. Why did you primer the 3 body parts separeatly?
I had to straighten some edges out, so I primed it while it was apart. Putting it back together before final paint reduces any scratches when assembling.
I tried to fill the 4 points where the body come together, it was a big fail. Next time, if ever, I'll use body filler.
I restore older trucks and cars (1930s-1940s) and the modern body putty really fills the seams nicely as long as you make sure they're braced to prevent any movement. Best wishes and be well.
I would braze them and then work them smoothe for that look.

After a lot of research, some had it and some didn’t.
The first Herbie didn't, but the rally versions did and had different wheels also: see Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo.

Only problem is hwebie had a sunroof

Absolutely! Sometimes I’ll be holding on to the metal grate the parts are hanging from, then step on the pedal to charge the part. Zap! It’s only 25 volts though. Still makes me jump! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

Was doing well, until the stickers came out. Decals are much better not as thick an hard to work with like stickers are. I lmbo when the dull razor blade wouldn’t hardly cut the stickers. But other than that good work buddy. Looking forward to more builds from ya

Maybe a little buffing but that old toy was still in nice shape. You did nice work on it but restore the junk ones. Leave the good old original ones alone. Thumbed up your good work.

Excellent work as always Rusty. Rusty I have one of these VW's but the wheels are fatter. I'd like to swap them out for wheels like on this model you did. I can't find anyone who makes or sells spare wheels, in your travels if you'd find some I'd be real tickled to buy them from you.
Never a big deal to me, I don't see that it was worth the trouble, but that's my thing. I like original VWs.
Maybe a little buffing here and there, the original was in nice shape. I would have left as is. Restore one that needs it.

Should have applied decals to body pre-assembly. Very sloppy paint job for hubcaps. Headlights and taillights could have used attention. 👎 Not impressed.
