    This is an update on the classic chemistry class precipitate reaction demonstration that shows how the Lead Iodide can crystallize and make a gold snow globe. The reaction is between lead(II) nitrate and potassium iodide and it forms potassium nitrate and solid Lead(II) Iodide. This chemistry demonstration is often called Midas Magic or Golden Rain but at Beals Science, we like to call it the Toxic Golden Snow Globe! (The toxic part refers to the lead compounds used in this demonstration - do NOT try this at home!)

    Very cool! Any significant issues with lead iodide stability and disposal, or will anyone who tries this at home need to call a hazmat team to their house? (That's why kiddies, we don't do this one at home!) Craig, Have a great and safe 4th!

      Thanks! Lead nitrate and lead iodide require special disposal. I do this demo with my AP Chemistry students so I figured I would show people what it is and how it is done with some of the remaining reagents.

    Well this is a double displacement reaction. And elements or molecules react to get stable , so why these two compounds lead nitrate and potassium iodide which are pretty much stable leave their bonds to form some new compounds when they have already reached the ultimate goal stability?
    By the way , thank you so much sir , for uploading this video. It makes chemistry much more interesting.

    Questions: 1) how long do you leave the solution on the hot plate/how do you know when to remove it 2) what temperature do you heat it at

      All good questions. If you can, heat it gradually by brining up the temperature slowly. The “gold” will start to move through convection and will start to clump. Then it is just a matter of deciding how big you want the particles to be-that determines time. Sometimes I go for 10 minutes, sometimes more.

      ​@@nimaipatel1373 the potassium iodide solution is being added @2:04. For cooling, it starts to crystallize as pretty quickly but the crystals will continue to grow as it cools off.
