Some major differences. Internationals are played during the European football season (which is ridiculously long) and generally the leagues take a week off to play matches. Another difference is those leagues are 90+ years old.
You can't compare a 15 year old league to leagues that are decades older and much more established.

Footballers play for the leagues their entire career, only return to their country during World cup matches. And here these people are criticising a two month premier league, which is a good earning opportunity for overseas players since cricket is not much popular in their country.
People like Ian Botham are just resentful that the IPL was not around when they were in their prime. No wonder he resents the fact that modern players can make millions from the game whereas he would have made peanuts. The reality is that money talks. If 20-35 year old players are wishing to spend their limited prime years trying to make as much money as possible in the IPL, then I don't blame them. The IPL has turned Cricket into a truly global sport. It has injected Cricket with the cash required to compete with other elite sports. Kids in countries where Cricket was unheard of (Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany etc.) will turn to Cricket because of the IPL, not because of boring antiquated Test Cricket or even ODI cricket. For that we should thank the IPL as opposed to antagonise it.
