Lady Fan is unbelievably foolish in her belief that the US could possibly protect Taiwan or that the US even has any intention of protecting Taiwan. They are sitting Taiwan up for a proxy war in the same way they set Ukraine up.
The US wants to fight its war with China far from their own shores. In the same way they have been fighting their proxy war with Russia in Ukraine far from their own territory.
China has done nothing to suggest that they want to accelerate reunification. And if she knew the least thing about the military situation, she would understand that China can reunify anytime it wishes, but that reunification by invasion would not be costless for China or costless for Taiwan. And China would be totally unwilling to pay that cost unless they thought it was an absolute necessity.
So the only thing that will accelerate China's desire to reunify and might trigger an invasion is American belligerence and consequently her belief that getting weapons and assistance from the US makes Taiwan safer is just ridiculous.
Any assistance from the US makes Taiwan more of a target for invasion. The last thing that China is going to allow is for the US to turn Taiwan into a weapons platform to attack the mainland. And the moment China concludes that that is what the US is trying to do is the moment that invasion will become an absolute certainty.
And the US is quite determined to trigger a military conflict over Taiwan within the next few years because the US is losing its global hegemony and unless it can defeat China and Russia, that hegemony will soon be gone for good.

@@WindSpiritZ You should study the Philippine-American War in 1899. The US went to war to control the Philippine islands for the sole purpose of eventually invading and taking over mainland China. These were the exact same people who had just run across the North American continent decimate over 6 million native inhabitants to secure their resources. The invasion of China culminated in 1900 when thousands of Marines were garrisoned within the Forbidden City, going so far as beheading local children and staking their heads atop poles to warn any upstarts to beware. Taiwan is not really considered a danger to the mainland but it's more of a homework or responsibility or can even call it a burden or a todo list. Sure they can try to downplay it or steer the public perception for the whole country that we don't need Unification since Taiwan is small and irrelevant but the history element of "Unification" runs deep into the bone of the culture so it would be difficult to change the narrative and if u dare to try change it might even backfire and beings viewed as the regime is weak and finding excuses for not completing unification.

The US could still return Taiwan to Japan or help create a new country as it allowed Cuba to form. They want the PRC and Taiwan to come to some kind of agreement since they had intended to give Taiwan to the ROC but has never officially done so mostly to keep the PRC from claiming it but also because the ROC committed numerous human rights violations as an occupying power. If Taiwan was Japanese or a new, independent Taiwanese country, the PRC would have the same problem with missiles on Taiwan that the USA had in the early 1960's. The USA planned to invade Cuba if defensive nuclear missiles in Cuba were not removed. The Russian Federation has the same problem with Ukraine joining NATO and not being neutral

The Americans believe in their own exceptionalism and are nobody's friend, not even with the European countries, their so-called allies--look what they did to the Nordstream pipeline. The Professor is right in noting that Taiwan is nothing more than a tool for the US to further her geopolitical interests and maintain hegemony over the entire world. The stats show that the younger Taiwanese are more pro-independence, having been goaded on by America under the guise of democracy, freedom of speech and other western values. This direction is very dangerous for Taiwan. Kishore Mahbubani, a Singaporean diplomat and geopolitical consultant, said that Taiwan, not being re-unified with mainland China, is the last vestige of China's "century of humiliation". As such, patient as she is, China will never allow Taiwan to become the unsinkable aircraft carrier of the US, even at disproportionate cost and damage to herself.
In their zero-sum world view, the US' only agenda is to dominate at all costs, with strategies that include the ruination of whole countries of other peoples. More needs to be done to educate and turn those naive pro-independence young Taiwanese around.

There is only one viable path towards lasting independence for Taiwan, which is to exist as a friendly brotherly nation alongside the mainland, similar to the relationship between Canada and the US, New Zealand and Australia, Belarus and Russia, and so on. Taiwan independence movement can only succeed if it convinces the mainland, through actions over a long period of time, that an independent Taiwan will forge a close relationship with the PRC. This will not be easy, but it is plausible.
The reason the current form of Taiwanese independence cannot succeed is that it is fundamentally anti-China and pro-US. It is less about independence and more about opposition to the PRC. Geographically, any sane person can see such an ideology is doomed to fail.

How does one convince the PRC to stop being a deaf dumb Dad like in the Thai insurance commercial, claiming sovereignty over Taiwan (just as Russia illegally claims sovereignty over Crimea) and accept Taiwan as an independent eldest daughter? The war crimes committed by the ROC against the people of Taiwan (including promulgation of a foreign constitution in occupied territory that it illegally annexed in 1945 when it did not, and still does not, have title to, even in 2024) makes any declaration of independence by renouncing the ROC constitution, anti-chinese against both the PRC and ROC. The ROC is a non-sovereign entity and government in exile that does not hold title to Taiwan under international law and is not a nation-state or country. There is no such thing as a permanent occupation as one contemporary statesman recently said. The USA wants to pick a fight so it can retaliate and effect regime change from Beijing to Nanking. The status quo can't be continued but I did like the former President of Taiwan's speech that assured the PRC that her government would not provoke violence and was open to dialogue. How can one maintain a peaceful relationship and remove fear in the PRC of a revived ROC seeking to usurp power?

I respectfully disagree since the ROC does not have title to the territory of Taiwan and is guilty of the same violations of international law regarding occupied territory as the Russian Federation in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. The UN does not recognize illegal annexation of occupied territory, movement of Homeland citizens into occupied territory, promulgation of a foreign constitution and elections in occupied territory, and violation of the human rights including conscription of the inhabitants of occupied territory.
The PRC claim to Taiwan is not valid because it is the USA as principal occupier of Japan that has the legal right to dispose of title to Formosa/Taiwan. Unification requires a formal treaty with the USA that transfers title or an illegal invasion and occupation such as was done by the Russian Federation in parts of Ukraine. Other options ARE possible but require creative genius to be agreeable to the PRC. The USA STILL has embargoes against Cuba so it is going to be tough to figure out but the status quo must end.

Coming from a Singaporean, a country with a pretty good relationship with Taiwan and have collaborated with on numerous military drills in the past. I sympathise with Taiwan and can understand the fear of young people there of being under the umbrella of Mainland China, losing their freedom and losing their identity.
But all I can advise is for them to stop consuming western media and visit Mainland China or perhaps work there for a short stint and broaden their horizon. Yes China is a surveillance state but generally the authority really don't care about you unless you are determine to create unrest then only they will use all their power to come down hard on you. But if you take note based on the last few decades on China's governance, they truly work for their people and want to improve the lives of its citizen, so I really don't see why would you be against the CCP. It may change in the future but based on their records I can say China is in very good hands.
Also if I may add, stop consuming the rubbish about democracy. Everyone in the west and Taiwan's mainstream media is harping non stop about the topic of "democracy". But please understand democracy is never the end goal of the people, democracy is merely a process to elect a good government. Although China may lack true democracy(although they have it at a provincial level), the CCP have now achieved a good government without it. Whereas although America claim to have true democracy which I think is up for debate, their government doesn't work for their people and is very incompetent.
It only make sense to reunify with China since Taiwan is in its backyard and your economy and security will benefit greatly from it. Also I doubt America really care for the well being of the people in Taiwan and you really don't want to be the next Ukraine.

I have to agree with what the Professor said. I also see exactly no benefits of an independent Taiwan. An independent Taiwan will make Taiwanese people loose out geopolitically, economically and financially too.
On top of that an independent Taiwan will be a disaster to the Overseas diaspora around the world. Therefore I would also urge any overseas Chinese to think if they would really want to support an independent Taiwan. Unfortunately the majority of the Chinese diaspora overseas are politically ignorant and geopolitically blind.

It's easy for an outsider to stand with one side or the other. I sympathise with the mainland Chinese and I feel for the Taiwanese.
Disregarding the US for a minute, the history between the two sides is contested, complicated. We cannot wish that away; for that to happen, both sides need to empathise with the other, and that requires good faith.
With the involvement of the United States, that is not going to happen. After all, they have an existential stake in debilitating China; it is the US' ambition to stay on top of the world. There is simply no way they will allow negotiations in good faith to happen.
People of good will in both China and Taiwan know this. They have to work within the framework as it is.

Truly tragic. But I hope the Taiwanese will spend some time reading European history. Because to read European history is to understand how much time the Europeans spent in the last 1,000 years killing each other before they went around killing others around the world. The only times they stopped were ever only temporary, and that was when they got tired and there weren't enough young people to die for them. The fate of Ukraine now. And the fate of Taiwan if it embraces Western values.

The Taiwanese are very well versed in China's history and China's is very similar to Europe's. The difference is that Chinese in China has been killing each other, in hundreds of thousands, for the past 2770 years in their recorded history. This and military operations beyond ancient China's borders were wars with the ancient Korea and Japan. If Mongolia is considered as a part of China, then Genghis Khan's Europe expedition can be included too. On top of all that, due to ancient Chinese govt have officials in charge of recording history, they even know how ancient Chinese govt functions and what led to their rise and downfall. And wars in ancient China can be so tragic that families and troops would resort to cannibalism.

Basically said Taiwan provides an important role to USA with regards to Semi Conductors.

He said, we would support Taiwan at least until we get semi conductors independence in the US, from 23:30 onwards in that interview.

This has less to do with Taiwan sovereignty and more to do with US hegemony and suppression of Chinese economic development that is now challenging Western dominance. Taiwan should look at the example of what has happened to US/NATO’s proxy Ukraine. Country flattened, 25%+ territory lost, economy wrecked, 500k dead. The military buildup by both sides is a chicken and the egg scenario. From the Chinese perspective their military buildup is in response to the US/NATO encroachment and encirclement of China and the arming Taiwan. While the US/Taiwan response to the Chinese military expansion is to arm Taiwan and encircle/contain China. This how the US operates in the many proxy wars it has fomented over the last 70 years. The proxy always comes out the loser in these profit wars.

I lived in Beijing and Taiwan for long periods of time previously. One way I saw it was that the status quo is the most intense form of “One Country, Two Systems”. While the status quo de jure fails to be OCTS in foreign policy and national defense, de facto Taiwan is not independent in these two OCTS categories because so many countries around the world have limited formal relations with Taiwan. (The bulk of most countries relationships with Taiwan is economic).
Meanwhile, on the other aspects of OCTS, the status quo satisfies the conditions fully. Lots of economic integration, one million Taiwan residents who live and work in the mainland. Still many many ways in which the mainland has influence in Taiwan.
I’m not arguing one way or another on the issue; I’m just saying one viewpoint could be that the status quo is an intense form of OCTS.

Currently however, there's a chain of economic disintergration, launch from the Taiwan side, which force a trade inbalance, and Taiwan use those trade surplus to buy US weaponary. So what China is doing is also pushing out Taiwan products, to reduce Taiwan trade surplus and force Taiwan governnment to choose lower standard living of Taiwanese to buy weapon, or reduce weapon buying, making it less useful to US. complicated situation.

I agree with the Taiwan Professor, the USA is not a responsible partner. We extol freedom and democracy, but in a qualified manner when we export it. We talk a good talk. You must open your society to us so we can worm our way next to the throats of your captains of industry, your military, and your government. Taiwan shouldn't want that, shouldn't want to be a pawn of the USA such as NATO and Ukraine are.
We just don't have your interests in mind. If they coincide then you are good. That is rare.
The USA is not run by benevolent leaders. I thoroughly object to what we have for leadership and I consider myself a loyal American. I didn't sign up for repression, robbery of the lower classes, broken government, an obsolete Constitution, and control by Neocons that engineered the Kennedy assassinations and 9-11. What progressivism we have achieved has been destroyed by wave after wave of warmongers. Our Presidents are shoved in an open-ended box that is a little too small. When they come out the other side they have been convinced to sublimate their campaign rhetoric for the set of principles that must be obeyed under pain of impeachment. Both Parties have the same Neocon warmongering foreign policy.

To me, this is more or less a family feud. It is very hurtful when one family member whom is incapable of remembering the important of family value as a whole and be satisfied with a short term gain, and sided with a stranger to goes against the whole family. But not matter what, the family would always wants that family members to turn around and return to the family as one. Because to us Chinese, we are one big family. The western world does not have this value in them culturally speaking. The western world population always wanted to be liberated and independence individually, and self sacrifices is hard but still can be done. Whereas for the chinese, it has always been self sacrifices to be practice for the better good of everybody. If you look at what is happening in Ukraine, This would be the same result that be be behold to Taiwan if she so choose to go that path. But my biggest concern is that the population on both side would be devasted as a result, and the stranger will be able to control them all. It is always the politician that does not have any foresight of the future, and acted irrationally. But I hope the population as a whole would not be blinded by these politician or so-called leader. A good leader will always have it's population at heart and not see a total collapse of it's society. To find that leader, would be an impossible task but eventually one will rise up. My hope is that is Taiwan is given a absolute full autonomy to govern and that the security of Taiwan is in the hand of Mainland China. This would be a win-win solution. China will feel that the family member has return home and stay loyal to the family value and progress the family objective. And Taiwan does not worried about its security and thus, could spend its wealth on the population welfare instead of military expenses. To me to achieve this is to start with the youth. We have to educate them of the value and culture of the chinese society that have flourish for this thousand of years that we come into existence. This is my 2-cents opinion.

But, my point is that the US never had the intention to return or to allow the Mainland to reclaim the island in the first place. The absence of the PRC and the ROC at the San Francisco Conference in 1951 loudly hinted that the US wanted to do as they please ..... such as with the Diaoyutai, Ryukyu Islands, Micronesia, Puerto Rico etc etc. Because the ROC on Taiwan did not submit to US desires to abandon the SCS islands and reefs, the ROC was punished for decades being prohibited from buying latest arms for her defence. Remember the ROC was only allowed to purchase only 2nd-hand arms from the US ? And so, back to my objection of the Professor's assertion .... the train left the station in 1952 ! ..... not, 10 years ago.

Taiwan is a product of Japanese and Western influence, both with millennia of aristocratic feudal history. It is important to understand that democracy is a graduated form of aristocratic freedom from social conventions and the favor of a monarch. The masses aspired to these freedoms. For example - about rapidly rising Chinese national debt, about BRI, which is not just necessary for post US globalization, but also to ensure China's own security, as US has very large control over the meritime routes, about the slow down of China's growth (which is normal), the current leadership's effort to qualitativly change China's economy etc. Just talking about US or Europe or Taiwan without side-by-side comparison from China leave no frame of reference to compare.

Well if the majority of Taiwanese view themselves other than Chinese and seek independence then all the better for the mainland Chinese, make it easier to militarily deal with an opponent you deem different from yourself, on an emotional basis this makes fighting easier, countries do this deliberately before going to combat but if your opponent does this for you then that saves time and effort and attacking will go smoothly. Now if the Taiwanese complain about the views of independent media about their stupidity then that means it's already too late to save them from their stupidity and people should not feel sorry for them, treat them with respect as a combatant and get the fighting started. China should also learn that diplomacy will only take you so far, in the end you will have to take military action, too much diplomacy is just as bad as too much militarism/jingoism.
