    Good point about the number of spokes influencing wheel characteristics. Back in the day, 36 spoked wheels were the norm. Times have changed, not necessarily for the better imo.

    I now own a Sirrus X5 and love it. Have clocked 1,350km on it so far. I have swapped out the 38T chain ring for a 42T, which suits me better. This is a comfortable, handles well and very enjoyable bike to ride. I find myself exploring more of the alternate routes that I would not have taken on my road bike.
    Wayno, by the way Orbea have also released an electric commuter bike called the Diem and it is using an almost identical frame design. You have 2 major companies utilizing this design now. Just maybe there is more to this design than you give credit to. I hope you can ride one and experience it first-hand one day. By not having a mechanical leaf spring or mountain bike like suspension, but using the frame, the bike is low maintenance.
    There are many things that have gone against traditional thinking but have turned out to be really good. Perhaps this frame design is one of those. To me it seems to suit commuter / light gravel / all-road bike.
    Regardless, if you agree with the engineering / compliance claims from the manufacturer, I really just like the look of it. I like it is a little different and I like riding it.

    You said you don't understand the need for a performance urban bike. Take me for example, I had a good quality carbon performance orientated road bike and loved it. But I am no longer fit, very overweight, certainly not 21 anymore and uncomfortable on said bike.
    But I want to keep riding and commute to work but don't want to ride something that is bland. So, the Sirrus X5 is something I would consider. It means I can get riding again and be comfortable. I can commute, tackle light gravel, put skinny tyres on and join a leisurely group ride. Add some carbon wheels. Presto I am having fun on my bike.

    I remeber those Moots/Ritchy "soft tails" with a simple elastomer in a wishbone seat stay, and relying on the flex of the material instead of bearings on the lower stays. Seems a far better idea than an untunably compliant, twisty rear.

    • @Bear-Jew
      @Bear-Jew Před rokem +1

      Absolutely! KHS Softail, Salsa Dos Niner, Moots Mountaineer, Litespeed Unicoi and even Lee Cougan Rampage Innova, just to name a few. All those softails seem to be better designed than this new "Spec". Another solution (also invented decades ago) would be a suspension seatpost. Just saying...

  • @f1hotrod527
    @f1hotrod527 Před rokem +2

    So your saying that manufactures should not experiment with frame compliance. Just run your tires flat or ride a mountain bike on the roads? The people bitching about the frame sound like the geniuses that bitched about disc brakes.

    I think the idea behind a performance hybrid commuter with a carbon frame is a little odd but the design features are quite interesting. By ditching the lower part of the seat tube you lose the option of a second bottle cage and a front derailleur but judging from the bikes my non-bicycle colleagues ride, it's the part most likely to not work. And it's not getting fixed as long as they can remain in one chainring reliably. With that leave spring design they add a little amount of suspension with zero additional maintenance and manufacturing costs. Shock maintenance and service is actually the number one reason I am not into mountainbiking, yet. So Specialized just wanted to design a dependable bike for commuters which is not a bad idea to begin with.

      @markp353 Před 4 měsíci

      Hi, I have a Sirrus X5 (Med) now and you can fit a second bottle cage in, you just need to go for a side opening one and can be mounted a little lower down. I just modified my side opening bottle cage so the bottom of the cage just sits 2mm above the frame. I have my tool canister in it. I could easily fit a small bottle in. On the down tube I have a 700ml wattle bottle.

  • @chrisharper2658
    @chrisharper2658 Před rokem +1

    Here is the problem with the upside down leaf-spring theory, when compressed it wants to spread so the chain stay and part of the down tube would also need to spread and that is not very likely. Plus any downward force transferred to the rear axle is apposed by the rear wheel. Since I doubt any of the members are compress-able, it must simply be cosmetic and require additional materials to make up for the design compromises. If it does in fact behave like two apposing leaf springs, well then it seems pretty crazy and may result in planned obsolescence.

    Someone will try and jump one and it will snap in half... You wait.

  • @Hardi26
    @Hardi26 Před rokem +1

    It's not leafspring, it's handle to carry the bike. Because the downtube might be dirty. You don't want to grab from there, when wrap your arm around it and run.. leaving the locked wheel into bike holder. Now you don't need to make your hands dirty. :D

    Why they are doing this is beyond you? How about making a light weight sporty urban bike that is also comfortable. And to all the people talking about triangles and 2 force members, you actually think the engineers don’t know about this hahaha. You all think you know more about bike design than mechanical engineers with years of experience. Hello!!!! They want compliance .

      I was thinking this, Specialized ain’t a bunch of guys who don’t have a clue about bike design. The amount of r&d in these bikes must be wild. And all the riders who still ride rim brakes won’t have it any other way.

    You said it right at the beginning, it's supposed to act as a leaf spring. Look at Lauf for a leaf spring front end.

    Probably a lot better had they used a normal double Diamond with a suspension post or just a flexible seat post. And fatter tires.

    New bike category 'Hipster Bike' all about looks isn't it.
    I do think it looks cool though.
    Surely with dropped seat stays on aero bikes, the double triangle is compromised anyway.

      I don’t understand the hate for this bike. It is interesting to see something different come out and people automatically tell themselves they hate it without even analyzing it. I took one out for a test ride yesterday. Felt great. Bike loos really cool.

    It will work as designed. Meaning, it will sell bikes. Someone new to bikes, who doesn't know or care about engineering, won't be able to take their eyes off it. Not that I would buy one, but I can't take my eyes off it either!

  • @mickf9149

    It's strange market, that's for sure. Looking at it over a few years it seems very European centric. It's a very similar situation with the 'urban' e-bike sector.
    Like you said, it's all about the market place, and how to stand out from the herd.
    I'd love to read the original brief that the designer was given. The gamer generation have a different perspective to design. It's horses for courses, and sone horses resemble parts from a Star Trek set.

    A cheap department store mountain bike would be a better urban choice! What are they doing? Trying to impress thieves?

    The cheaper version of this thing (still $3000) weighs 24 pounds, which must be some kind of record for a carbon frame not on an e-bike. Weird.

    • @markp353
      @markp353 Před 4 měsíci

      Hi, it does not need to be as lights as a road bike. Wonder how its weight compares to a carbon mountain bike?
      The Al stock wheels are very heavy. If you fitted Roval Terra Carbon wheels you will shave off 900g. Also these 38mm gravel tyres and a little heavier than 28mm road bike tyres.
      Also it does have very low end components compared to most carbon road bikes which also contributes to the overall weight. But I see your point.
      Using carbon is not always about weight saving. Look at the frame profile they have been able to create. I like how it looks.

    The Specialized Sirrus is a joke. My utility bike for getting to work and shopping is an old quality steel 90's mtb converted to drop bars with big puncture-proof Schwalbe Marathon tyres, mudguards and pannier rack, it's bombproof, cheap, and not desirable to thieves.

    Urban bike made out of carbon? 🤔
    Not very handy… you have to take care all the time. As you pointed out, there are many ways to have some compliance which I even be able to swap out to fulfill my needs. But this concept of the frame is rather a joke.
