    I'm so glad you had a positive experience in Perth. Australia has such a car-centric culture, being a cyclist often makes you a target of ignorant hate.
    However cycling must play a key part in modern and future transport solutions, and upgrading bike paths is a win-win - safer access for riders, and less cars on the roads for drivers. But drivers often complain about ANY investment in cycling infrastructure, and simply demand we build more roads (that will then get filled up with more cars!)

      @joehill4094 Před 4 lety +1

      people would not mind cyclists if you STAYED IN THE BIKING LANE

    • @woutervanr
      @woutervanr Před 4 lety +26

      @@joehill4094 "What biking lane?" is usually the issue. Also, if you build shit that's shown in this video like a lane on a fucking motorway or in the middle of the cars in an 80km/h zone ofcourse nobody is going to use it. If cyclanes stop at crossings and it's safer to cycle through red before you get crushed by cars and trucks, ofcourse people will. We all pay taxes and no, tax on cars isn't the only thing use to pay for the roads, so there should be good infrastructure for all modes of transport. Especially bikes and pedestrians seeing what the health and environmeltal improvements are.
      TL;DR If you see cyclist that's not using a cyclelane, try to think about why that might be instead of only hating on the cyclist.

      But I'd say Australia has still a much more sophisticated cycling infrastructure than most of Europe. In fact, only the Netherlands (and Belgium to some extent) have those fully detached cycling highways

    As a Perth resident this was a delight to watch. A comprehensive review and great commentary. Nice to see you visit some of my local routes. Unfortunately, car is still king. I'd love to see so much more infrastructure but the future planning is less than inspiring. Perth has great weather for cycling and very flat terrain. A missed opportunity.

    Its unfortunate that countries don't apply simple best practice measures that are tried and tested in the Netherlands and Denmark, and choose instead for subpar measures, that do not offer optimum safety and comfort for people riding a bike. It should be very simple, but "traffic engineers" overcomplicate things. Another great video as always though !

    • @MrHenkkkie
      @MrHenkkkie Před 7 lety +19

      I agree, some countries are reinventing the wheel as to cycling infrastructure. However, it is nothing but positive to improve cycling infrastrucure in towns in the first place. And after a few decades, the over-engineering should be gone.

    • @Friek555
      @Friek555 Před 6 lety +9

      It's not just the traffic engineers, but also the politics that make this development difficult in other countries. If biking infrastructure is not popular with the residents, local politicians will not push for biking infrastructure and legislation.

    • @michaeleverett1479
      @michaeleverett1479 Před 3 lety +7

      So true, in Australia, many of the so called bikeways are actually shared/ multipurpose paths which are built to poor engineering standards. No bikeway should have street lamps or other obstacles in the way with sharp twists and bends of the track. Most importantly, its ideal if pedestrians and cyclists can be fully separated. At least there're simple stringent standards of proper cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands and Denmark.

    I think what you've seen is a multi faceted strategy.
    Once they have achieved that the kids go to school by bike, then the motorists will get schooled in how to behave around cyclists. Nobody wants to run down his neighbour's kid. It takes time.
    What you see here is: 'authorities willing to change'.
    What did you hope to see ?
    I think we see a city in transition. Let's help them where we can.

    • @irrelevance3859
      @irrelevance3859 Před 4 lety +5

      That's actually a good idea. Most cities strive to have bike lanes that go to the city centre (which is good too) but safe cycle lanes that go to school and school areas and cars are slower is important. More children will cycle, no one wants to be responsible for a death or injury of a child especially, they'll slow down

    We looked at cycling routes in Geography in the subject of urban design. I used Perth as an example of showing great use of cycle lanes and made comparisons between the UK and European cities.
    Granted Perth is much larger and has plenty of space to achieve these excellent cycle connections, but I really do think we in the UK and Europe can learn from Perth and Australia's cycle paths.
    While the UK has been implementing more cycle routes on roads, we don't really have anything like Perth where most paths cut through the suburbs into the main city, or adjacent to the road.

    Can you please do a video on Adelaide's cycling infrastructure in Australia. Adelaide has one of the worst cycling and public transport infrastructure for an Australian capital city. The Torrens River Linear trail in Adelaide is the shared used path for both cyclists and pedestrians while the bitumen path is kept in a horrible condition. There are cracks everywhere with protruding tree roots on the shared path along the River Torrens in Adelaide. Moving at speeds of 25 km/h or more along the River Torrens shared path in Adelaide is incredibly dangerous on a road bike; I almost fallen of the bicycle several times along that crappy shared path. Ideally, pedestrians and bicycles should always be kept on separate lanes especially when bicycles move faster than 10 - 15 km/h. Even more car centric Perth has secure all day bicycle cages in some of their suburban train stations.

    This is really impressive! But I think there is a downside with the city as a whole because often Australian cities tend to have a kind of sprawl so that it's not really necessary to go by bike. I also wouldn't say that junction design is so bad, it's just a different approach to put cyclists next to cars to insure it's being seen. I'm also interested if bike paths are actually objectively safer. There are studies suggesting they aren't. Nevertheless it definitly FEELS safer than riding on the street.

    In Australia we don't build much cycling infrastructure. When we do, it's almost always a shared path. A place shared between cyclists and pedestrians. In times when we actually have cycling infrastructure, Australia is obsessed with shared paths. The stupid engineers here always build paths shared with bicycles and pedestrians, it's like they are stupid. You get complaints from pedestrians that cyclists go to fast and should travel at 10 km/h and cyclists complaining that people walk on the wrong side it's stupid. It would be better if there was a separate space for both. On that note could you do a video on how space is divided or otherwise in The Netherlands between cyclists and pedestrians.

      At least the state governments in Perth, Sydney & Melbourne try to make their best efforts of improving their existing bicycle infrastructure and building separate bikeway on major roads. Even by today, the South Australian government are so pathetic and just keep on ignoring the improvements of Adelaide's terrible cycling infrastructure. The motoring lobby such as the RAA and automotive industry are destroying the urban fabric of Adelaide for their own automotive agenda. A livable city must have a fantastic road, cycling, pedestrian and public transport infrastructure; Adelaide's public transport and cycling are a bloody joke which is so similar to a third world city. Without a good cycling or public transport infrastructure, that city is practically unlivable. The North American low density urban sprawl of single use zoning in Australia including Adelaide are great for the automotive industries, but extremely bad for people's health.
      It's no wonder that trip times in the Australian capital cities are increasing to such high trip times even for short distance trips. Australia statistically is one of the most obese countries on the planet. A report of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney being the most livable cities in the world is BS propaganda by the crazy automotive industries; data on livability in those cities is skewed to favour in inner suburbs which were built during the old periods of horse, street trams and bicycles. The single occupant car and massive freeways are destroying the living standards in Adelaide, Melbourne and many other Australian capital cities. Mostly single occupant car use are abused too much in Australia especially in the capital cities. Stuff the freeway construction.
      Cycling infrastructure is a need in all Australian capital cities and especially Adelaide. Go for walking, cycling and public transport for the majority of trips, not mostly inefficient single occupant cars.

    May seem odd but i wish cyclists, if not wearing bright clothing, would use flashing tail-lights even on a sunny days.
    Often in the shadow of trees or buildings its hard to be instantly seen.
    Headlights are growing far more powerful and are actually a safety issue for oncoming cyclists, particularly on poorly lit pathways.
    Not hard to tilt them down to actually illuminate the way ahead.
    Thank you for the opportunity to vent.

Nevertheless in a recent TED talk it was stated that the return to the community is 8 to 1, so a $1 000 000 investment will in the long run save $8 000 000. Sounds like a good thing to me.

    • @BO-he6yy
      @BO-he6yy Před 7 lety +3

      As you well know in the Netherlands, on cycle paths, there is usually only a broken white line in the middle seperating each direction of traffic or serving as a lane divider for cycle paths which only go in one direction only. With "sidestriping" he means the continuous white lines used to mark the edge of the roadway, this helps the road user with road positioning particulary in the dark as you can more easily distinguish where the paved roadsurface ends and the less grippy surface begins. This makes driving more relaxing as well as faster, because with these aids drivers feel safer.

    Cycling in Perth can be a nightmare if your using it as a means to commute. I've lived there so I guess I'm qualified to say a few words. If its not the heat or strong winds blowing against you in most cases distances can be very far depending on where your coming from and going to, you can't cycle long distances in a short space of time, the place is just too big, if your not say for example journeying along well marked out routes from a suburb close to the CBD a lot of the place has little to no cycling lanes at all. Perth can be very hilly in places also, factor in the hot and windy conditions will give the average cyclist a cardio workout they won't forget in a hurry, not a good look to arrive into work with.
    Australia in general has a reputation of poor attitude towards cyclists czcams.com/video/bB2IC3gjq7U/video.html
    There is also a strict enforcement of a $100 fine for not wearing a bicycle helmet, I don't agree with this personally, Many other countries namely Holland don't have such strictness and instead show a play of common sense on the part of both cyclist and driver to watch where they're going.
    Over all Perth, not a great place to cycle for all of said conditions.
    One other pet hate of mine actually was the large groups of lycra clad cyclists that could be found around Perth, they often block up the lanes for other cyclists, it just goes to show cycling isn't taken seriously as a means of transportation or commuting and more of a hobby in Perth because the car is King due to the sprawl of the place, its literally the Los Angeles of Australia.
