Expendable cash is gone for many people. Inflation is killing us. The current economy has got more people holding on to their spare cash and only spending on things they really need. No matter how much you like bikes you just aren't going to buy one right now. I made the decision two years ago to buy one bike that does it all for me and to get it bespoke made. No more carbon off the shelf brand bikes. I'm done buying bikes. I paid $11K for it and believe me I don't want to make that purchase again, especially for these junk carbon frames that are marked up over 400%. People aren't even going to look at cycling again until the industry starts giving us what we want again. And that is options. Good options at an affordable price.
Totally agree with you that's exactly how I feel and live in South Wales in the UK its making people choose another sport as the price is ridiculous.

It's not just bike industry. The whole world, or it's, industry(economy) is unsustainable. Customers don't need more junk. They want quality and good life.
The capitalists that own the bike industries have got super greedy to maximise profit. They’ve seen what energy companies have done by hiking prices. It’s backfired on them. Warehouses full of bikes and parts and people won’t be ripped off anymore.
They reap what they sow.

Only people who can afford 20k on a toy are considered by the industry. Its a ridiculous envy party
Welcome back Waynos. Purchase used stay with mechanical shifting you will save a ton of money. I purchased a used Tarmac this spring & sold allot of the components online & spare cycling gear that I wasn't using. The money I made paid for this bicycle. Stop purchasing new over priced bicycles the bicycle industry will get the hint.

Most bike shops here in Perth arent interested in bikes, or customers.. They stock very little, and you mostly have to buy up front, and they get it in.. I can do that myself..
I will be going online for my next bike.. The bike shops complain about this, but they did it to themselves.
What I see in bike shops here in Perth is either they have an attitude, or the staff are not fully trained with high end bikes

As tech matures, prices should drop, but that's not what we're seeing in the bicycling industry. Squeezing customers is not good for repeat business.
not only that, but the industry is also pushing "innovations" down to consumers to justify the newer prices. I am always for improvements, but the last few years feels like a regression with my current gen bike being harder to maintain, heavier, slower and way more expensive to keep running. Makes me not really have sympathy for the industry for what it is going through now.

The cycling crisis is symptomatic of a larger systemic problem regarding commercial real estate, housing prices, and the current state of capitalism.
I think there has been an element of contempt for the consumer. Poor quality coupled with high prices which has priced cycling out of the reach of normal consumers. Even mid tier bikes are extortionate and I myself don’t want to spend this sort of money. Cycling isn’t for the masses anymore, certainly when it comes to it as a sport and hobby 😢
I have a titanium hard-tail 26" mtb. It's got a 150mm fox factory from 2008. The frame is 2005/6 I think. It's a weapon. And it still looks and feels as good as it did the day I built it. People still admire it. I built it to last and I enjoy thrashing it. The bike industry hates people like me, and hate the good folks at Lynskey for building frames that last more than 4 years. I took it into a bike shop and the greedy owner instantly started dissing my Zee shifters and derailleur (105 level for downhill). His sole aim was to belittle me into buying his extremely expensive XTR kit. He perfectly represented the bike industry.
I genuinely dont have an ounce of pity at all to these insane companies.

All I see is somewhat negative. Quality won’t really change but fewer companies will control a larger portion of the market and the end user will have less say in the products made and quality therein.

Virtual cycling has dominated most of my cycling activities. Hasn’t bought anything cycling related since 2021.
I think the number of people who want very expensive, fragile bikes made with planned obsolescence is limited. I'm surprised you took this long.
My bike is 7 years old now. Reckon it’s worth holding off a little longer for lower prices?
Greed is one reason the bike business is hurting. They've simply priced things too high and their not selling.
A second problem for bicycles is the emergence of battery bikes. My experience is that I encouter more electric motor bikes now than traditional bikes on most of my rides. A significant number of my older avid former bike friends are not buying into $5-digit aero/mechanical wonder bikes, they're going with Electric motor bikes to keep up. It's easier, cheaper, and somehow they don't seem to give much thought to relying on a motor rather than 100% their own muscles. The rap is "Well, I am still pedaling and now I can ride like I used to, keep up."
I hope there's a cost-afjustment . If not I reckon a number of very hard years are in store for bike $ellers until they figure it out.

What i expect is one or more of the major bicycle brands to go under. We are talking about 30 or more year old brands collapsing. Several brands are on the edge and 2024 may see their demise. You are absolutely correct about the tolerances needed for hydraulic disc brakes. I was caught up in the SRAM debacle in 2014. Fortunately, they figured it out without injury or death. Yes, it delayed my new S-WORKS Roubaix by six months, but i had a safe and useable bicycle that I had for years
This happened to a local bike chain. They are so overstocked with inventory that they needed to close a location to stay in business.
for me it was weird to see all the corporate normies starting cycling, I'm glad the sport is returning to pre-pandemic levels

I think part of the problem is UCI. They have a rule that bike mfrs have to produce bikes like the pros ride. But that makes prices go sky high. UCI has caused those trying to get into cycling priced out of the market. Entry level bikes are hard to find. I can’t afford $12k. Thats my rant
I think the fad of riding a tdf type bike has run it’s course, especially when they upgrade then find out that they are no faster around there favourite loops , then are left perplexed as why they spent a shit load of money !
I’ve never been one to follow trends , I’m still riding an old giant OCR it’s definitely not standard but it’s still more capable than my ability, all the upgrades came from gumtree and Facebook marketplace and local bike shops.
I have never used online stores as I try to support my local bike shops especially as I have 7 other bike to ride and maintain, ps was wondering what happened with you and the channel good to see you back cheers!

A shout out to 99 bikes for usually having cheaper bikes, being friendly, and not snobby.
It's very easy to have disc brakes running with no issues - just use mechanical or hybrid disc brakes. Hydraulic ones are too unreliable.
I think 2024 will be a very big drama for many bicycle manufacturers! Take a look at some of Canyon's sites, for example! they have hardly had any stock for almost three years and now almost all models in all sizes are in stock, in short, there are simply no more bicycles being sold. Yes on Marktplaats but no new bicycles and those brands will not last long. And this applies to multiple industries. 2024 will be a drama for the industry in several sectors
No only do bike manufacturers need to step back and look at themselves in the mirror, so do bike shops. Many bike shops need to reinvent themselves. Here's my opinion. First, the ones that have an "attitude" need to get rid of that 💩 if they want to prosper. That includes treating customers who did not buy a bike from them with courtesy. They need to focus less on selling bikes and more on the repair and maintenance side of their business. Do quality work at a fair price. Online sales of bikes is only going to become more and more the dominent way to purchase a bike. So hop on that train and offer assistance in making the "best online purchase + bike set-up" as a in-store modest paid service. That will also create potential future repair and maintenance customers. In general, provide services that are valued, at a fair price, with a smile for everyone. 😊
Honestly, if a business owner can't figure this out on their own, they should probably find something else to do.
After I learned that most new bikes come with barely greased or dry headset assemblies, I regrease them every time I unboxed and built a new bike. When I was doing this for my customer's new bike, my ex-colleague (manager, who also works on bikes himself) dared say I'm being extra. I care about doing the right thing and the extra step I did was nothing less than that.

A shortage of bikes during covid , followed by raising prices in the short supply scenario followed by over ordering and here we are . aside from that meaning not covid related , the bike industry kept pushing unnecessary tech such as wireless shifting , carbon frames and wheels , hydraulic disc brakes ( i love them 😂) bomb prod derailleur hangers , etc. all nice but not necessary for a commuter or recreational rider

How many bikes, or part you can buy in one year? One? Zero? I had my Focus Cayo since 2015 and anotherone I purchased in 2023. Full stop.

Forget the hype.....get hold of an old model tarmac sl2 to sl5....replace needed parts and keep for 10 years....cycling need not be expensive....my sl5 tarmac rim is 6 years old super light ..super stiff and super quick...and can easily keep up with said fellow clubmates on thier factors and pinarellos....or go online and buy cheap components seperately and get a bike shop to build your bike for you...stay away from new bikes....the bike Gods will eventually get the message and stop charging bikes for the price of a new car....
Merlin and Ribble still my go too and sometimes i buy from bikeinn or bikebug. Used to go to wiggle or chainreaction but sadly they went a bit down in stock and shipping went up.
Hookless is just for tubeless and breaking surfaceontherimless, so if you are less confident that stuff is not for you guys

Partly oil and material costs related costs driven by Russia/Ukraine affecting everything.
This is a sport that sold out their fans. Sponsor or co sponsor a pro team (or offer group discounts) and you have unfair pricing power. Imagine the market if the uci developed standard specs for a road bike and/or limited how many teams one company can sponsor.
It would be a different market.
Now we have a market where the pros can push defective cranks and never have to apologize to their fans.
Disc brakes and integrated hoses through headsets are two different issues.
Well… its the issue of nonsense. Both are stupid on road bikes for Joe Average who wants to maintain his bike just a bit by himself. 😊
The bike right now its getting more like a motorbike, from electronics shifters, battery powered bicycles, built in lamp in the seatpost, overpriced and etc, wth?!?. Where's the fun in that?.

I was with you until you went all durian rider with the disc brake and integrated whine....the problem is global inflation..no one is buying houses , cars, jewelry...gas prices crazy..yeah bike prices are crazy but you can easily buy a $100000 pick up truck now..specialized sl8 are $14000 and you can't get one..money is tight..all industries are hurting...disc brakes didn't cause that buddy.. you're reaching😀..
