  • This aluminum molding from a classic Ford Mustang is being repaired with Super Alloy 5 rod and flux without warping the thin aluminum. Thin moldings are prone to cracking when handled, luckily MuggyWeld had the solution this classic car owner was looking for. The Super Alloy 5 works great on the 60s chevy grilles as well. Do not lay the aluminum on a steel table while torch brazing the part as the table will pull heat from the aluminum. Super Alloy 5 made this repair in just a couple of minutes at a car show and swap meet. 1/16 is the best diameter for this application due to the extremely thin aluminum.
After making the repair, Super Alloy 5 can be polished up like the parent aluminum. The torch seen in this video can be purchased at muggyweld.com. Keep the powder flux close to the work zone to prevent the part from cooling too much while grabbing more flux. Do not hold the torch in one spot for too long as the thin aluminum molding can get to the melting temperature quickly. If an oxyacetylene torch is the only option, turn the oxygen down using a carburizing flame.
Clean the flux off of the rod before placing it back into the PVC tube.
Here's a tip for working with flux: heat up the rod first before dipping it into the powder. If the flux doesn't stick, you can try dipping the rod in water first, then in the flux. But if there's already flux residue on the rod, just keep reapplying the flux without using water
