Fun fact: When I was a kid back in the late 80's / early 90's I went to a bluegrass convention with my dad. I think it was in South Carolina, but there was a dining area kind of like a school cafeteria and I sat down at the table directly in front of Bill Monroe and we shared a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

March 15, 1996 - Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe makes what becomes his final appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. He ended his touring and playing career in April, following a stroke. Monroe died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tennessee, only four days before his 85th birthday. Rest in peace Mr. Monroe.

Sounds silly...but my favorite movie is Planes, Trains and Automobiles and the scene where Del and Neil are traveling down the highway in the burnt out car with no roof in the middle of the winter as they sang "Blue Moon of Kentucky" always gives me the warmest feeling.
There's something special about that moment in the movie where the two guys finally bond after all their hardships and singing "Blue Moon* brings them together even more. Something about the open road, traveling across the countryside in the winter, belting out that song is special.
I had to find out who's song that was and I'm glad I found that it's Bill Monroe's classic.
Thanks for the song Mr. Monroe!....I gotta run, I've got some Shower Curtain Rings to sell.

It was bluegrass that created country music of yesterday but the country of today Idk what to call it anymore cuz it's not country. But some of the new stuff is ok. But other then that I listen to the old stuff from way b4 I was born until the 90's b/c I was born in 1975. I have great respect for Willie, Waylon, Hank Sr. Among others of that generation they made some awesome songs. I listen to all of them from that generation up to the 90's like I said above. I hate hip hop or rap what ever u wanna call it.

I was just reading about Elvis playing at the Grand Ole Opry on 10/2/1954, He played , That's Alright and Blue Moon. Elvis was 19 at the time and the crowd was polite but they did not respond like other audiences. Elvis was never invited back. Bill Monroe did not like what Elvis did with his song but sources say he was ok with it once the royalty checks started coming in. GK said a guy at the Opry pretty much told Elvis to not quit his day job LOL Elvis was before his time a bit so I get it. Alot of great history here :)

Rose Maddox does a GREAT cover of this song! She was hesitant to sing a bluegrass song, since she thought she didn't have the voice for bluegrass. Boy, was she wrong! Bill Monroe had to convince her, and she said the only way she'd do the song (the album) is if there was steel guitar (played by Wayne Gailey, I believe?).It just makes me sing along, and LOUDly! Lots of people criticized the album as not being true bluegrass due to the steel guitar, but whatever you want to call it, it's GOOD!
