- Hello my friends!
It's time to start another project. It will be kind of rare plane with stainless steel sole - try to guess what kind :)
For the body i decided to use spalted beech wood. As you probably know spalted beech is a little bit weaker than healty wood so i'm gonna make stabilization with impresin90 plus blue and green stains - that's the theme of todays episode.
Fell free to leave any ask in comments.
I hope you got good time, no matter with or without my videos.

A trenching plane maybe??
Aero plane ❤
A plane ol plane?
Stainless is not easy to machine. I tried turning it on my lathe and it was horrible. 😀
I know it 👍
Can we please all work to get this channel to 1 million subscribers? I love these videos and the craftsmanship! I certainly think he deserves it! Can’t wait to see the next video.
Sorry can’t hear you, his arse cheeks are muffling your voice

A process I have never had the opportunity to use.
I usually use a mineral oil for this. My spoke shave of curly birch is soaked in automatic transmission oil and that is why it has that reddish hue. Using the mineral oil also is easily renewable if necessary. The body of the plane also gets a several wash coats of blond shellac.
I love to see other people’s processes. Thank you for documenting this for us to enjoy and study.
Greetings Stavros, from the high plains of Texas.
Absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to see what it looks like finished
Wow I would like to see the Plane made from it 👌
Interesting! Thank you.
Exciting!
Can't wait! :)
for the best result, after the vacuum, it is necessary to allow atmospheric pressure to drive the resin inside. The impregnation begins at this moment.
Thanks for advice 👍
@@StavrosGakos I left the bar under atmospheric pressure for a week. And watched the level of resin slowly go away.
Can’t wait to see the finished product!
One of your videos is always a good time
Thank you 👍
Interesting! Looking forward to seeing this project continue. Thanks!
This process looks fascinating, can’t wait to see the results.
I'm not sure I'll like the color, but I'm going to withhold judgement until I see your final product. I've loved everything else you have made, so I'm pretty confident I'll love this one, or three, as well 🙂.
Beautiful work. Its good to see you posting videos again - you went dark for a wee while there!
Thank you Paul :)
Can't wait to see more! Seeing as you already split the sole pieces i'm going to guess a rabbet / carriage maker plane
Thank you :) it will be not this type of plane :)
Thank you for sharing, I’m sure I will have more questions
I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!!!
Thank you, merry christmast 👍
This is going to be great! I want to see how deep the color went. Thanks for the videos and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmast Walter 👍
ahhh the metal workshop is back up!
I like the blue ones, the green no so (for now).
That s quite some chunk of steel, guess, they are getting slimmer in the next episode!
Hey Vivien 🤟
Thanks!
Thank you Mate 👍
Can't wait to see what you make with these items. Happy Holiday to you and the family!
Cheers Tim:)
Can't wait!
Those are going to make some beautiful planes!!
Another great video Stavros!! A trenching plane maybe??
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you! It will be something different ;)
My guess is an infilled unhandled coffin smoother plane. If I get it right, do I win one? 😜
Not this time 🤟
I wish I could get three notes out of the same glass vessel! I could play Beethoven’s fifth with one vessel!
😁
Ciekawy film!
I am eager to see you start cutting so we van see what the penetration is with that resin.
Really curious what these will look like inside once you cut into them.
Wow... Really interesting process, dude! 😃
Beautiful pieces of wood! Looking forward to see what you're going to make with them!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And happy holidays!
Thank you, Cheers :)
great work. I weigh my wood before and after to see how much stabilizer it absorbed.
Thanks! I've made test and the wood is heavier about 25-30 percent 👍
Thats about right. i have gone as high as 50% with more time under vacuum.@@StavrosGakos
Looks like Nether wood from Minecraft. Eerily beautiful

Хочется пожелать успехов, но знаю что и так все будет ок.
Dziękuję i pozdrawiam 👍
I wonder what plane you will make, the blanks are too small for a jointer/shooting plane, but too big for a block plane. Regular smoother somehow seems too boring for you to make since you grew so much in your skill. I looked forward to you making it.
You will see :)
what brand/type of resin do you use to stabilize wood?
Hey Carlo! Impresin90
My guess would be a rebate plane.
Not this time :)
I have 3 questions about stabilizing:
1) Will stabilizing increase wear resistant of normal plane wood like pear or beech?
2) Is it possible to stabilize boxed wooden blank? Maybe by using heat resistant wooden glue.
3) Can i stabilize plane which was already made?
Thank you.
Hey, 1 - yes, 2 - if you don't use hide glue for boxing i think yes, 3 - don't do this, you will destroy the plane. Cheers!
I love your planes Stavros, each one is a work of art. Have you ever experimented with polyethylene glycol for stabilizing wood?
Thanks! Never, but thanks for idea 👍
I'm referring to PEG 1000 which is different from the very toxic form that is used in antifreeze. I once used it to stabilize 1/4" slices of wood from a 5x5x8' beam that had sapwood along one corner. I used a wax pencil to number each slice as it came off. After treatment I quarter-matched each piece in sequence to form a bartop that consisted of darker wood with lighter wood forming differing diamonds all the way down the top. It never shrank or split and was one of my most satisfying projects ever. It comes in blocks that look like parafin and I dissolved in in water in a 35 gal. garbage can. I got mine at Highland Woodworking in Atlanta, GA and I was going to send you a link but I don't think they carry it anymore. They could probably get it for anyone who is interested though.
Keep up the great work my friend. @@StavrosGakos
Following on @carlopieracci2828's question, I'm also curious to as to what type of resin you're using. Blue Spruce uses some type of infused resin (acrylic?) in their tool handles, which gives them wonderful heft and smoothness.
Hey Mike! It is impresin90, similar stuff to cactus juice
Thanks, Stavros. I'm making a couple saw handles from a block of rosewood I picked up years ago and would really like to try this process. I have a similar vacuum chamber & pump to what you're using. I'll probably test it out on some cheaper wood first, though.
Oh, and Merry Christmas!
@@mikeestes4119 good luck with your stabilization 👍 Marry Christmast!
Stavros, not convinced this is your most brilliant idea 😊
What did your wife say about the spaghetti?
Let's try it 👍 She loves my spaghetti ❤️
Not some thing I have tried yet, mostly because I don't know how, and do prefer natural wood. I guess this would solve any potential cracking problems that seem to plague thick wood planes. Not sure if that is ever a problem with the thinner body Japanese style planes. That does bring up a question, have you ever played around with them?
Hey, i've never used japaneese plane
They are totally different. The blades on them are similar to the old irons you use, hard metal forged to a softer metal for the main body of the iron. The chip breaker is a 'new' idea for them, coming in to use in the last 100 to 150 years, I think. I am playing with them also. I have yet to make a western plane, and did get some Japanese style planes. You have to do the final fitting of the blade to the plane body yourself.
Hi! One question: Is this a process for only coloring the wood? Or do you do something similar to dark species? Thanks
Hey, it makes the wood dense and heavy, after that process the wood have no tendency to humidity changing.
This was an OK baking show. The bread loaves came out hard as wood and, somehow, moldy at the same time.
Looking forward to another set of great plane builds. Out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of your floats? I'm assuming that you made them yourself.
What bread my friend :) i don't remember the dimentions, but they can be different and the float will be works the same 👍
Looking forward to the next episode!
How many minutes in total under vacuum?
I didn't count but it took about 3 hours to no bubbles
Does this resin makes the wood harder and stronger or just prevent it from warping and moving?
Hey, yes - the wood is hard and dense after stabilization 👍
Q: a while back you used spalted pear for planes. Where those blanks stabilized the same way? Or were they firm enough to use raw?
Hey Todd! Earlier i've used raw spalted beech blanks, thank you for your support 🤟
Jak rozumiem niebieskość jest opcjonalna...😀
Jak wszystko :)
Looking forward to the next part. Were those spalted maple?
Hey Nik, it was spalted beech 👍
What resin brand did you use Stavros ? I’ve been messing around with some cheap methods (acetone + paraloids or thinned epoxy) because classic thermo setting resin is quite expensive and haven’t been able to find a good brand that does not require to sell a kidney in order to purchase a liter.
Hey, impresin90
That is so interesting and very attractive !!! May I ask a question - I have a fairly big chunk of quarter sawn Jatoba approx 75 x 75 x 600mm. Would it be suitable for a couple of nice planes??
You can use it, but first check the ends if there are some cracks - just cut thin slices from the ends and try to bend them 👍
Thanks for getting back to me, I will do that and if all good its looks as though I have my 1st after Christmas project. Heres wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes David @@StavrosGakos
@@davidjennings9253 merry Christmast :)
What type of resin is it? Is it one component and heat cure or is it two component?
Check the description of the video 👍
Czyżby materiał idealny pod kątem stabilności? Bardzom ciekaw twojej opinii.
Nawet więcej niż idealny 👍
Wybacz amatorskie pytanie ale co to za rodzaj drewna ??
To zagrzybiony buk 👍
Just a plain old plane?
Very plain and old.
too much show for simple process dude, try a mixture of a diesel fuel and burn car oil let it dry at normal temperature it'll penetrate all the way thru!
Hey Levi! That's CZcams - you don't have to like my content and i don't have to use diesel fuel and car oil for wood stabilization 👍
