- Southern Locomotives Ltd have well established themselves as a leader in preservation, in the field of restoring and overhauling Bulleid pacifics. As such, they have forged close ties to a few heritage railways and other societies, through the common goal of keeping the legacy of Oliver Bulleid alive in the years since the end of southern steam. Based in the Isle of Purbeck, the Swanage Railway has played host to many of SLL's locomotives in preservation, with the majority of the SLL fleet spending periods based on the Dorset branch line.
One such example being 34070 "Manston", which has been based on the Swanage Railway since first returning to steam in preservation in 2008. Typically, SLL ensure their locomotives appear in immaculate condition when they emerge from Herston Works. However, during 34070's recent overhaul, SLL were approached by the Swanage Railway enquiring as to whether they could avoid repainting "Manston", and instead bring the pacific back in a weathered condition. The cladding team at Southern Locomotives Ltd obliged, with the result being that when "Manston" returned to service following the overhaul in 2022, enthusiasts were given the rare opportunity to see an authentically worn-down and weathered Bulleid pacific in action.
Despite the appearance, a lot of conservation work has been carried out by the cladding team at SLL, to ensure the Bulleid was still fit for use. This included a significant amount of rust removal and patch repairs to the old paint work, while new smoke deflectors had to be made due to the previous ones suffering from deterioration. This meant the new deflectors had to be carefully colour matched to the worn paintwork on the rest of the locomotive so they wouldn't look out of place. When asked, the head of the cladding team stated, "A lot of work has gone into making her look this rough".
Recorded over two days, 34070 would work the steam diagram on the SR's Green timetable. It's a refreshing change of pace from the usual pristine locomotives seen in preservation, and does well to honour 34070's working life; 34070 spent its final years allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction, appearing in a similarly rundown aesthetic.

Quite nIce to see her like that. Much as I remember them in the last days of steam rather than shining looking brand new. Great video as usual. All the best Mick.
. . . . and a bit of wet coal dust will help in her appearance as well!!!!! She looks so natural in her care worn state, just like we remember🤔🤔!! Would be interesting to take a public poll on weathered or not weathered. There's some experts in that workshop, always difficult to match exactly, you can't see the join!!! Nice one Matthew, especially the "early morning" hard work shots👍👍👍
Great filming, as ever I prefer the 'weathered' look to the pristine. Looks more as they were in BR service.
Thank you for this example of your craft. What wonderful views!
They capture a distinct setting in a wonderful light, buttressed by your establishing shots of line-side infrastructure, orchestrated by the passage of the consist.
It emits a gentle atmosphere, par excellence.
Looks well nice weathered
I was there last month , absolutely love this railway , Eddystone was rostered when I was there , nice to see Manston out and repaired after the shunting mishap a while ago . I highly recommend to anyone visiting Corfe castle , to have a bite to eat in the Greyhound inn pub !
18:30. Pheasant on the right-of-way…. Delightful video!
Cracking video, good sound effects, many thanks sharing!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
That's definitely on my Bucket List!
Great to see someone in preservation go to these lengths. Anyone got a record of any other weathered locos, or stock for that matter?! Great video too!
The weathered look is an interesting idea and I think a good one although it's led to all sorts of comments on other videos along the lines of "why don't they clean or paint 34070". It actually looks a lot cleaner and less rusty than many 1960s shots of steam engines. But that could also be authentic as I think Exmouth Junction kept its locos looking reasonable till the end, unlike some areas where they were just left filthy.
Very different coal loading from the huge concrete tower at Rosegrove Burnley that I saw when scrambling around the locomotive shed. Principally W.D. 2-8-0’s hauling local pit’s outputs to power stations whose cooling towers have also been demolished. I watched several of these Bulleid’s at Exeter and Plymouth on holidays.
Nice video :)
Amazing keep it up 👍
Thank you
Great video. How was the locomotive weathered? Did they just not clean it for a few days or did they have to do stuff to it? 🤔
Cheers! The majority of the paint on the locomotive is from the same coat it received in 2014, so has been naturally worn down over a few years. As for the dirt and dust, just not cleaning it.
DMU's running with the Bubble Car in place of the DMBS, then.
Well spotted! Might have been a breakdown and a quick replacement? I think the first service to Wareham didn't run one morning due to a problem but the later ones did, maybe this was the occasion. On the other occasions I've been this summer it has been the full 3 car set, with or without the bubble car.
What's with making the coal damp?
Helps to keep the dust down, making the crews life a little easier
