  • Visiting from the Swanage Railway, courtesy of Southern Locomotives Ltd, 34070 “Manston” received its first daylight runs on the Mid-Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’ this week, as it took charge of services over the school half term break.
“Manston” is currently presented in a wonderfully weathered condition, with dirt and grime building up nicely across the air-smoothed casing. Its work-worn appearance has been applied to provide a welcome and authentic reminder of 34070's working life; 34070 spent its final years allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction, appearing in a similarly rundown aesthetic.
The services were running in conjunction with the lines’ ‘Magic of Locomotion’ event taking place over the school half term break. This would see a few theatrics taking place across the railway.
    Locomotives:
Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34070 "Manston"
00:00 - On shed at Ropley
    01:21 - Alresford
    03:07 - Horse Lane
    04:55 - Northside foot crossing
    07:24 - Turk Street
    08:57 - Bishop’s Sutton
    10:14 - Rookwood Lane
    11:30 - Hampshire Hunt
All footage filmed on Friday the 16th of February 2024.

Good to see the youngest of the Southern Railway BLPs running.

Just as I remember them as a child, grimy from their daily chores, makes a lovely change to the pristine look !

What a cool locomotive! And I love they kept it in a weathered look. Just so neat!

As much as it has divided opinion in some circles, the finish is very much adored where its needed. Glad you enjoyed the video!

I’ve heard those chain driven valve chests can be a pain. She’s a wonderful loco though. I’m glad they weren’t all restored into the rebuilt style to make maintenance easier, it’s great to see them in original guise.

We were in Four Marks minding the grandchildren half term week, so managed to see Manston working through Ropley and Medstead and Four Marks - absolutely loved the state she was in....!! Great video, really enjoyed!

Makes a wonderful change from the usual pristine locomotives that we've become accustomed to. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Only saw it and rode behind it in late 2011 at the West Somerset Railway. A photo of mine of it won the SLL photo competition.

There's just something really cool about a weathered loco like Manston, it feels like an authentic working machine, which is what it was - and still is! Things like the LSWR T3 look best in shining immaculate ex-works condition, and deserve it. But knowing that Manston still looks great, and all it'll take to put her back into factory condition will be some elbow grease and a wash, is pretty cool I think :) Like in scenes like this video, you've got a Southern Region line with Southern infrastructure, a Southern Region locomotive and SR green coaches - combined with Manston's period weathering, and you could put a filter on this video and it would genuinely look like footage filmed in 1963! Wonderful

Manston looks in ex works condition, plus one day! And I was in Fleet during the 1960's, when the Bulleid's were genuinely filthy (except Salisbury)!😅

Lovely video I especially liked the last clip the rhythm of Manston was amazing something that modern loco’s and electric cars don’t have they have no soul

She sounds like she needs a little attention to the valve mechanism, she sounds out of beat to me. Love the spam cans though, and great video.

Pretty standard for original light Pacifics with their chain driven valve gear

It's a slightly odd one. 34070 sounds spot on when going forward, but there is a slight drop when running in reverse. It's been identified as a very minor slack in the chain drive, which is due to be given attention before the main operating season starts.

i know that its probably meant to look like that but, Manston doesn't look like she's in good shape i mean, look at her, you may see a hard-working loco, what i see is a loco being worked hard into the ground and not in a good condition at all, because locos like her were express locos for the most part, and weathering just to me doesn't look good at all locos like her should be clean and not all weathered and rusty looking.

Looks can be deceiving, and in this case especially. "Manston" is a very sound machine mechanically, not least for the fact that is incredibly well looked after by fitters from Swanage, SLL, and the Mid-Hants.
The light pacifics could be found on a wide variety of workings across the southern region. I'd recommend flicking through the SLL galleries when you get a chance:

Disagree. Much better to have the weathered look, it reflects how the locos were on the 60’s. There are plenty of other steam locos all gleaming and shiny !
