      I figured the mildly hyper 6 pack 340 with headers would make more than the basic 10:1 300 HP 327"... like 325 HP... surprised it did it with iron exhaust manifolds... thought you'd rev it to 6,000 RPMs, though... 340 was Chrysler's '327'... both liked to rev... 327's were actually a tad over rated in HP, but close to their rating...

      I drove a friends's 1970 Barracuda Trans-Am once. It was a 6-pack 340 that may have been hotter than other versions. Was very picky on how you drove it, and required different spark plugs for street driving vs. fast/race driving. I was used to big block Mopar engines, but was very impressed with this one!

      Larry Niles Total fact actually. I personally own a 67 Malibu factory 327 car as well as a 63 Polara with a 322” LA SB. Both cars have dual plane high rises, .480 cam in the 327, .465-.472 cam in the Mopar. Both cars have headers, both are Automatics with stall converters. The Malibu has 3.31 posi, the Mopar has 3.23’s. I’ve raced the 2 many times and my Dodge has never once pulled away from my Chevelle. I built both cars, with similar combinations and outcome is what it is.

It's like watching a living history of those years. I would be interested in seeing dyno runs of the high compression small blocks like the Chevy 327 L79 had solid came, and 11:1 compression. I know Ford had some of those also.

    Nick: try to get down to DC sometime and visit the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall and out at Dulles Airport. You can also tour the restoration shop in Silver Spring, MD. I mention this because whenever the restorers need to make a part, like a strut perhaps, they engrave it as a reproduction so the next guy won’t think it’s original. You should mark your shift rod with “Nick’s Garage 2020”.
    My Mopar roots run deep. The first car I ever drove was my mother’s 1952 Dodge four door with the semi-automatic transmission. I got my license at 16 in 1961 in the family 1957 Chrysler New Yorker four door hardtop. I took the only behind the wheel driving test in my life in downtown Baltimore in mid-day traffic. The inspector had me parallel park that monster on the street too. “Just pull in there, Kid.” I think I impressed him, but with the fins out back with a radio antenna on each one, it was a snap. 392 first generation Hemi with 325 gross BHP of course. Later my older sister bought my grandparent’s 1952 Dodge business coupe. That one had a manual transmission with fluid drive not a torque converter. You could put it in third gear, let off the clutch, and the car would slowly accelerate with the engine at idle.
    Finally, I have a friend here in Annapolis who has an office in an industrial park. One side office, the other garage. I didn’t know about any of this when I first visited him. When I was about to leave he said “Look at this” and opened the door to the shop area. In there he had one of each Barracuda body style, a 1971 Duster drag car, and a Jensen. He’s getting on in years, but he still has the Jensen and one of the Barracudas.

To exceed the rated number by 36 ponies was unusual, unless the engine was a NASCAR big block.

It was a hard decision but we got the mach 1. We are talking 1977. I had a buddy that had a 71' 340 Demon 👿 that ran 11.43 quarters consistently. I have alot of Respect for those 340s'. Thanks Nick for posting about 340.👍

    In 1972, I bought a Plum Crazy & Black T/A from a friend who blew up the engine racing (it was a good death). He bought the car new and said it had 330HP & 370Tq stock. He bumped it to almost 400 for racing and that's when it lunched. I changed the K frame and dropped in a 426 Hemi prepared by Otto Candies. Wish I had never sold it ... ^v^

    Nick, that was really cute about the Greek rod!!! I have a question about the 340 six pack. I noticed when the throttles opened on the secondary carbs, that's when the hesitation occurred. Now why doesn't the secondaries have accelerator pumps??? Could this problem occur in the field or just on the dyno???!!!

    • @karlkoenigstein4138
      @karlkoenigstein4138 Před 4 lety +1

      Pretty sure that the outboard carbs are supposed to be activated by vacuum signal from the venturi of the center carb (like a 4-bbl vacuum secondary carb). So by mechanically forcing them open, they’re probably opening a little early so it gets the bog when the engine goes lean for a moment... no effect on the peak power reading, but the drivability will actually be better in the car.

    • @bobmehlfelder1823
      @bobmehlfelder1823 Před 4 lety

      @@karlkoenigstein4138 I appreciate your response. To me this is why most people probably complain about the driveability of the six pack, since what you've explained seems to be the issue at hand. Yes, I've driven dual carburetor engines, but I never noticed any bogging when full throttle was applied. These were two 2 bbl carbs with a primary and vacuum operated secondary throttle butterflies.

    • @ScottKenny1978
      @ScottKenny1978 Před 4 lety

      Yes and no. Back then, they were rated at gross HP, not net. Net hp is how the engine is installed in the car, gross measured higher.

  • @TractorWrangler01
    @TractorWrangler01 Před 4 lety +4

    I'm pretty old school but that seams to still have a carb ballance issue. You can get the air fuel right on those but still have a carb ballance issue. If the 2 outside carbs are running rich and the center carb is running lean you would still get the O2 sensor reading correct. I think there is still some left in that six pack.. Just my observation for what it's worth.

    Maybe you can give light on the 340? The rumor was when I was a teen that the 340 was a bored out hopped up 318. Is this true? I know I 1/4 mile several Demons with a 1970 Road Runner I had. The 340 was not to be taken lightly.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray Před 4 lety +3

      The 340 was based on the LA 318 but was designed to withstand high RPM operation in drag and/or road racing. In a light vehicle such as the Mopar A body it gave many big block cars a run for their money.

    • @TheCoalDragonForge
      @TheCoalDragonForge Před 4 lety +1

      These guys are mostly correct it’s a LA block but it has a bigger main journals so if you want to build something like a 340 but cheaper build a 360

    • @devillockj
      @devillockj Před 4 lety

      The Coal Dragon Forge smaller (identical) mains on 318/340. 360 has bigger main bearing. Makes 360 crank kinda pain in butt to put in 340. 318 crank will fit but takes too much to balance. Oh god , I could go off on tangents now lol

    • @jimjungle1397
      @jimjungle1397 Před 4 lety +4

      In 1965 Chevy put the new 350 hp 327 in the Chevelle as 325 hp. In 1966 Chevy put it in the Chevy II in 325 hp form without the Corvette windage tray. In response, Mopar designed a new 331 engine for 1967 with a hydraulic cam. It's performance was embarrassing compared to the 327 and even the solid lifter 273, so Mopar did not release it. The 1967 and early 1968 318 LA engine blocks were thick enough to be bored to 4.00 inches for the 331. In the 1968 redesign of the 331 to 340, the intake ports were made the size of the 327 ports and so were the valves. The bore was bored to the Mopar maximum of 4.04", from 4.00" for 340 cubic inches. The original 340 camshafts, especially the manual transmission 1968 cam, were designed for 6500 RPM redline. Since cast pistons were used to keep costs ddown, the valve springs were weakened to protect the cast pistons, for a redline of 6000 RPM and usually wouldn't run that fast.The manual transmission cam was 22 degrees larger than the automatic cam, but with the valve springs it was difficult to take advantage of the larger cam. The cam was designed to specifically beat the Chevy 327, which was also a manual transmission only hydraulic cam.

    • @MaliciousSRT
      @MaliciousSRT Před 4 lety

      @The Great Cornholio You can't bore a 318 out to be a 340. Also the 318's mostly used cast cranks where the 340s were forged. So were the rods and the 10.5:1 pistons, heads were 18 degree, 2.02, 1.60. Big dual plane intake. Saying a 318 is the same as 340 is like saying a 4.8L truck engine is the same as an LS1.
