    Eowyn's scene is much better in the book. In the film, she declares "I am no man" only *after* Merry stabbed the Witch King with the enchanted blade. But in the book, she reveals her identity as a woman and stands strong *before the battle*, even when it seemed she could not possibly win. The way it was written in the book makes Eowyn seem much more admirable/courageous.

    Which, for the first time in perhaps a thousand years, gave the witch king a moment of pause and self doubt. He knew well the prophesy, and here before him was one who could technically fulfill it. He had no idea the one beneath his notice was also one who could fulfill the prophesy, and he with a dagger specifically made for the job.

    The scene where Aragorn deflects the knife with his sword was unscripted, in a way. The sctor playing the orc was supposed to throw it past Viggo Mortensen's head, and sound effects would make the clanging sound. But the orc actor's prosthetic makeup made his misjudge his aim, and he threw the knife straight at Mortenson's face. Viggo's natural reflexes are what saved him when he swung the blade and deflected the knife. Otherwise he would've been gravely wounded or even killed. Also, the orc actor licking the knife's blade before throwing it was something the actor did on the spur of the moment. He later said he thought it would add extra menace to his character, and he was right.

      @kim Jong-unsub It wasn't a requirement that woman be the one to kill him. The Nazgul weren't unkillable but they weren't exactly easy marks either. Their wraithly nature made killing them very challenging. There was a prophecy made long before the events of the film that the witch king of angmar would not meet his end at the hands of man, and it is probably this prophecy to which he was referring when he says that no man could kill him. But more than this, the thing that led him to his end was being stabbed in the leg by a Barrow blade by Merry (even moreso not a man than Eowen). That was a sword purpose built for disrupting the magic that kept wraiths "alive" so to speak. Eowen being a woman had no impact on the effectiveness of her killing blow, she was just aided by the fact that he was already mortally wounded by Merry's strike.

    Among the verses in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, one of the prophecies that the witch made to Macbeth is this. "It will not fall down to those born by a woman," and "It will not fall unless the forest of Birnam moves on its own and crosses the Dunsinane."There was a prediction that Macduff, who eventually killed Macbeth, was a man who cut off his mothers stomach before he was born, and Malcom's army camouflaged and crossed over, which looks like a forest moving. Even in the Lord of the Rings, Witch-King of Angmar, When he said, "No man can kill me." and Eowyn says, "I am no man." It is a great piece of writing as well.
      "So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dunedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."

    That first one, Aragorn killing the Mouth of Sauron, wasn't in the books, but it was oh so satisfying!!! The book never actually tells us what happens to him in the end, just that after the parlay he rides back through the Black Gate to his armies. He did, however, return more than just Frodo's mithril shirt. Along with it was Sam's sword from the Barrow-Downs that he left with Frodo when he took the ring & Sting after Shelob stung Frodo and Sam thought he was dead, and most everything else orcs took from Frodo when they captured him. So that was nice of them at least.

The blade had been forged in Cardolan, one of the three sub-kingdoms that together form the northern kingdom of Arnor, and it had been enchanted with spells specifically designed to 'kill' Ringwraiths. At 4:28 you hear The Wilhelm scream. It is a stock sound effect of a man screaming that has been used in at least 389 films and countless television series (as of July 2018), beginning in 1951 for the film Distant Drums. The scream is often used when someone is shot, falls from a great height, or is thrown from an explosion.

    I think that Gandalf killing a Balrog deserves the 2nd place. After all it was a demon from the 1st era of middle earth. Only very few could defeat him. I guess only Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn (Galadriel's husband) and Sauron could do it. No one else in the 3rd era had enough power.

  • @chrisdaigle5410
    @chrisdaigle5410 Před 3 lety +26

    The book was MUCH better:
    Dernhelm: "Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
    A cold voice answered: 'Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
    A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."
    "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
    Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel.
    "But no living man am I! You are looking upon a woman. Eowyn am I, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
    The winged creature screamed at her, but then the Ringwraith was silent, as if in sudden doubt. Very amazement for a moment conquered Merry's fear. He opened his eyes and the blackness was lifted from them. There some paces from him sat the great beast, and all seemed dark about it, and above it loomed the Nazgul Lord like a shadow of despair. A little to the left facing them stood whom he had called Dernhelm. But the helm of her secrecy had fallen from her, and and her bright hair, released from its bonds, gleamed with pale gold upon her shoulders. Her eyes grey as the sea were hard and fell, and yet tears gleamed in them. A sword was in her hand, and she raised her shield against the horror of her enemy's eyes.”

    What a great list! This video was very enjoyable to watch and I agree with the list although there are two more kills in the movies that I would put in my top 5. One is the epic scene where Gandalf kills the Balrog and the other is when Saruman is defeated and killed in Isengard. This last scene is only in the extended edition of The Return Of The King but I think it's very well done even being different from the books, where Saruman is killed in The Shire. Keep up the hard work and I'm sure those 10k subscribers will come in no time!
