Circling the Globe in a Solar-Powered Plane

- Some dreams are so fantastic, it takes an unprecedented bid for adventure and glory to see them blossom to fruition. Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, captivated by the spirit of great expeditions of the past, partnered to make the first flight across the world in a solar-powered plane that produces no pollution. Storing solar energy in batteries, the Solar Impulse is capable of staying aloft indefinitely. However, as Piccard and Borschberg learned, this didn't make the adventure easy - or require any less intrepid heroism from the co-pilots.

@Faizan Younas doesn't the U2 use sports cars?
@Faizan Younas the u2 is no longer in service in the military, but yes it still is in NASA as a high altitude research plane and not a spy plane. it has a tandem landing gear for the same reason as this plane here, to save weight.
Faizan Younas no it doesn’t... why would you say that? There is no footage of that happening, it never happened. idk how you could be confused unless you never looked it up or are just making shit up Lol. Either way it doesn’t excuse you from posting such ignorance ( especially when you could have fact checked it right here on CZcams look it up). It uses fall away wheels.
It does have a chase car though, I think they use Chevy Camaros in the USA and some BMW a 3 series I think but I’m not sure. Also, no I’m not looking it up, I said that I didn’t know; I did not state it as a fact. Try saying something like “i think the U2 spy plane uses dudes on bikes too” next time... or don’t because that’s fucking retarded.
can't even imagine, flying thousands of feet in the air, witnessing sun rise to sun set without having to hear jet and child noises combine, a true *BLISS*

2020: guy flies around world on sun power, barely hear about it.
This is great, but still not nearly big of an accomplishment as the first ever trans-Atlantic flight.
Because it’s pretty normal nowadays... it’s not like a distant dream
@@-keiskx1774 if you understood the physics, manufacturing process, and knowledge involved in making this possible it would be awe inspiring. Since the Kardashians, or what not, are on most people's minds they have little space for comprehending real significance in the world; in essence making the mundane interesting so they don't mind their servitude, But hey! to each their own I guess. This is amazing, hopefully more technology and time will be put into this so we can see solar powered commercial flight soon
We need more advancement in solar panels and engines, not the actual airplane.
Panzer Faust the engines are the most important part of the plane so i thought that was implied.... i was saying i hope the technology overall gets more advanced
No. Electric planes are enough. Keep the heavy panels on the ground where it does its job at its best. Batteries are those which needs development.
Marvincent Acuña
Actually solar panels (especially future multi juction with 60-70% estimated efficienty) can add to flight time of the plane depending on how long it stays in the air, By covering the plane you can maybe squeeze in that extra 5% air time to take less solid state batteries with you so you can add in more people. The panels are very light btw.
Solar powered airplanes aren't feasable unless you want something private in the future that goes above the clouds at slow speeds and has a reasonable size with retractable heli props for easy landings so that it can be used as hobby/long term but nearly free transport. But honestly in that sense I could see it being used by the average joe with a pilot license to save some money on plane tickets :p.
@@panzerfaust5046 Solar panel efficiency is tough and expensive, two things that commercial airlines will absolutely hate. If someone wants to make "green" flight a thing they'll need to establish not only a major technological leap but also one that is more reliable and cheap than repairing/replacing an existing turbine can be...
All my life I was thinking about such adventure. You fulfill my dream. Thanks
I love their spirits and motivation. They made a dream comes true! when he said “some of them decided to quit but I decided to continue” really touched my heart.
Sure everything is possible, as long as you have sponsors and money and access to unlimited resources.

subhan khan so you’re saying the only thing stopping you from flying a plane for five days continuously, without sleep, is money???
@@CrazyDavy22 The point was being able to make a dream come true. But to answer your question. Yeah. Heck, give me the funding I need to start my project and I'll fly around the world without stopping. What's 5 days?
subhan khan No. The point was that it was an impressive feat. The guy flew five days and five nights without sleeping! Did you watch the video? If money is all that is stopping you from achieving your dream, get a better dream!
@@CrazyDavy22 You still don't get it. Would they have been able to achieve that feat without those sponsors? You're distorting human ability with availability of resources. My first post is towards the latter, the former varies depending on individual. Some have it, some don't want to have it.

With the pacific, honestly as an engineer I'd say to have a ship capable of 25 knots cruising just follow them around from below.
Just in case they had to abort and crash into the ocean.
Or better yet, get a large enough ship with enough space to land that thing on it, and given it's just as fast as the plane, it could land like a helicopter.
Melon Collie your a winner. Great thoughts.
Awesome idea, goal fly around the world using only solar energy. Reality have air craft carrier follow it and burn millions of liters of fuel.

Big companies are threatened by these and will do anything to stop them.

Thomas Newton Fuel companies, Companies that depend on selling non renewable sources of energy
Hasmit Uchil yeah thats true, they're slowly dying out anyways, if we the consumers make a desire to use non renuable sources theirs not much fuel companies can do either way other than lobbying
+Thomas Newton Unfortunately, buying a gas car is cheaper than buying an electric car right now (for example). I think they'll try and just lower fuel prices in the future to stay relevant. It's true through, all throughout history projects and pieces of technology have been shut down by the big corps and such.

Jimmy Vega for long range long endurance surveillance and similar. Where refueling is an issue.
Jimmy Vega: Yes, it's just like those crazy cyclists, the Wrights. They managed to build a stick and cloth contraption which they succeeded in catapulting into the air for 12 seconds from a wooden launch ramp. They then had the temerity to suggest that air travel was the transportation method of the future.
