After that, the fact he left Rome to join the Allies in South Italy deeply afflicted the moral of our country, not only the Army.
Many decided to stay on the side of the fascists exactly for that reason. And when you hear Italians talking about the "betrayal" they generally refers to the King escape the day previous of the surrender.
Everyone in Italy entrusted Mussolini and thought he was the lead of the country. But once the things went bad, terribly bad due to Mussolini himself, everyone turned again to see what's the king was doing.

It won the republic for a bunch of votes, kinda like 1.5 million votes was missing so technically we still doesn't know who truly have won.
But republican politicians declared the republic even before the results was completely scrutinized. Also because a republic was well accepted by the Allies and their armies in Italy was able to enforce law by themselves.
From tha point to today passed 75 years roughly. Not all of splendid friendship with the western powers, but definitely we became founding members of NATO and EU strongly believing in those institutions.
That's because before ww2 we was basically alone and surrounded by enemies. We had no trust in French, Austria or Germany and even Russia, Turkey/Ottoman Empire and other minor powers was hostile.
After the war, we had a team to play with and within. We wasn't anymore alone. What we don't had in terms of territory or resources, we could have obtained through diplomacy, collaboration and always backed by one of the strongest military alliance ever seen in human history.
It's like Germany. They lost the war, but by creating the EU, the first agreements, they got the resources they needed to fuel their economy, to live better, rich, wealthy, healthy etc. Without the needs of waging war against some kind of far distant colony or some big enemy power.
Even France, their main antagonist in Europe was now their strong allies. And British and Americans too. So Germans chill out, became democratic because they feared nothing anymore, started working and producing, and become one of the best country in Europe.
The only problem left around was Mr. Stalin and his USSR with the Varsaw Pact. 😑 But until no one started a war with them, things would have been nice and dandy.

Fun fact about ww2: Queen Elizabeth II served militarily in the war: Elizabeth II, the former Queen of Britain, was very keen to join the ranks of the combatants in the war, even though her father, King George IV, tried hard to discourage her from doing so.
