  • It is rare to see Petrosian in full-sacrifice mode, but in this game he is.

This is one of my favorite Petrosian games, combining 2(!) of his patented positional exchange sacs and a demonstration of his often overlooked tactical ability. Thanks for sharing the game and your excellent instructional commentary.

One can imagine the pleasure to play such a game with such a final comb. Great Tigran! The poor Knight in a5 of the Panno variation
was a mere spectator of the masterpiece!

Those two Championship Matches between Petrosian and Spassky are reason enough to show that long matches for the Title of Champion should be used today instead of the mini matches they have used so often. In 69' Boris got a lead then Tigran stormed back but Boris ended up winning. This means that the severe pressure that Magnus felt in short matches would not occur as that 69' match shows once behind one can still have enough games left to make a comeback. It also makes for better Chess. Thanks for the good show!!

Hijacking the diagonals! This masterpiece is one of Petrosian's immortal games.
I can't say enough about it!

Another very nice video. Your excellent commentary, well-chosen games, and player/match history are all very much appreciated. In my top two favorite chess channels. Sometimes the much longer videos of other channels and their deeper game analysis can be interesting, but sometimes it's also inconvenient to have to spend 25-45 minutes on a video. You always do a great job packing a lot into succinct videos. Thank you!

Poor Spassky. A brilliant player, but between Petrosian and Fisher I bet he spent a lot of time staring at the board and going WTF just happened?

Incredible game! It's a masterpiece where Petrosian adopts Alekhine's style, which must have been quite surprising for Spassky.

Just judging by this game, Petrosian was the better player of the two by far in this match. Spasski never saw it coming, had no chance to turn the tables earlier on, just stubbornly sticking to his plan, that thus didn’t work?
